This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bhagavad Gita is one of the noblest scriptures of India, one of the deepest scriptures of the world. It is rich in beauty and full of poetic power. The characters stand out in heroic grandeur, in the midst of a splendid setting of martial valor. The figures of Arjuna, very human in despondency and doubt, and of Krishna, majestic, resolute, persuasive, are clear, living, of universal truth. On another side, the Bhagavad Gita is full of inspiration, of religious devotion, of keenest insight into the heart of man. The conflict of motives that beset human action, the clinging fetters of selfishness which check us in the path to the immortal, the subtle evasions of the lurking whisperer in the heart: all are clearly seen and vividly revealed. Yet, withal, the claims of abstract thought are not forgotten; every stage of Indian philosophy, every shade of logic and metaphysics, is given its place; and many practical suggestions are put forward, touching the problems of Indian politics and history, hints as valid to-day in human affairs as they were two thousand years ago.

"Bhagavad Gita" means The Songs of the Master, that is, of Krishna, Prince of Dvaraka, a Rajput of royal line. The occasion is the decisive battle of Kurukshetra, and the opening of the poem is epic and martial in spirit. Only a part of the battle is recorded. We are not told the result. For this work is but a section of a much longer poem, the Mahabharata, which embodies a whole cycle of Indian history, tradition and legend. The leading events of the great Mahabharata war are historical. They have left a deep mark on all later ages of Indian life, down to our day. The great struggle between kindred branches of the Rajput race recorded there, ...

These serialized articles, each including an introduction and translation of one or more of the Gita's 18 books, were then compiled and printed as a single volume in 1908 by the same publishing company. The present volume is a verbatim reproduction of that work, with the addition of a foreword, additional notes and an appendix consisting of articles by Johnston, which may shed further light on his understanding of the Gita.Charles Johnston (1867-1931) was steeped in the wisdom of eastern traditions, having also translated the ten Principle Upanishads of the Vedanta, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Tao Teh King of Lao Tse, and the Crest-Jewel of Wisdom of Sankaracharya. Throughout the current translation and commentary he demonstrates an in-depth knowledge not only of the Gita itself, but of the larger culture to which it belongs, the spiritual traditions from which it arose and those it inspired, and the inner, often veiled meanings of eastern symbolism. His translation stands out as one of only a few that truly bring the essence of the Gita to light in the English language.

Book Lord iva s Song

  • Author :

Download or read book Lord iva s Song written by and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-03-27 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Bhagavad Gītā is an acknowledged treasure of world spiritual literature, few people know a parallel text, theĪśvara Gītā. This lesser-known work is also dedicated to a god, but in this case it is Śiva, rather than Kṛṣṇa, who is depicted as the omniscient creator of the world. Andrew J. Nicholson's Lord Śiva's Song makes this text available in English in an accessible new translation. A work of both poetry and philosophy, the Īśvara Gītā builds on the insights of Patañjali's Yoga Sūtra and foreshadows later developments in tantric yoga. It deals with the pluralistic religious environment of early medieval India through an exploration of the relationship between the gods Śiva and Viṣṇu. The work condemns sectarianism and violence and provides a strategy for accommodating conflicting religious claims in its own day and in our own.
