Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born during the Great Depression and World War Two (1929–1945) an entire generation has slipped between the cracks of history. These Lucky Few became the first American generation smaller than the one before them, and the luckiest generation of Americans ever. As children they experienced the most stable intact parental families in the nation’s history. Lucky Few women married earlier than any other generation of the century and helped give birth to the Baby Boom, yet also gained in education compared to earlier generations. Lucky Few men made the greatest gains of the century in schooling, earned veterans benefits like the Greatest Generation but served mostly in peacetime with only a fraction of the casualties, came closest to full employment, and spearheaded the trend toward earlier retirement. Even in retirement/old age the Lucky Few remain in the right place at the right time. Here is their story, and the story of how they have affected other recent generations of Americans before and since.

Book Footprints in Stone

Download or read book Footprints in Stone written by Mohammed Azher Siddiqui and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-12-28 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Those that follow international migration commonly agree on the fact that the late twentieth century has been the age of migration. However, human migration started about two million years ago and continues to the present. The author hails from India and immigrated to the United States in the late twentieth century. Researching his ancestors' migration patterns led to the interesting but not surprising discovery that they, too, migrated to India from different parts of the world. Migration impacts culture, and that effect is captured in some period photographs that are part of this book. Footprints in stone, however, is not just about the past. It also speaks to contemporary life in the United States of America and then ventures to look to the future to what could be possible if we take care of the myriad challenges that humans face in the first quarter of the twenty-first century. The readers of Footprints in stone in 2089 will hopefully gain from reading about the past, but they will be the only ones to see if the author's predictions were accurate.

Book The Persistence of Religion

Download or read book The Persistence of Religion written by Harvey G. Cox and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-30 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the nineteenth century, Nietzsche famously announced that God was dead. In the twentieth century, increasing reliance on science and technology led to a widespread rejection of belief on the grounds of its irrationality. Yet religion has not died. In fact, the opposite has occurred: it has persisted and proliferated. Despite the relentless pursuit of scientific advancement, in the twenty-first century we now see religious influence everywhere. In this wide-ranging dialogue, two leading commentators on religion address - from their different but complementary traditions of Christianity and Buddhism - the continuing appeal of spirituality to people eager to explore fundamental questions of meaning. The authors indicate that science, for all its benefits, has limits of explanation. It may be able to show how, but not necessarily why. Yet belief too must not go unchallenged, since, as Ikeda says, 'religion can become either a medicine or a poison'. What then is the proper role of religion in a world plagued by intolerance and extremism? The authors point to its place in dialogue, education and peacebuilding. They emphasise the centrality of non-violence, and the inspiring examples of Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. In so doing they recount formative experiences of involvement in the civil rights movement and protest against Vietnam (Cox) and personal exposure to the misery and destruction of war (Ikeda). Their joint vision of a just and true religious sensibility makes a vital contribution to the fields of religion, peace studies and ethics.

Book excerpt: Six years ago my mother requested that I should write a story about how things were when we all were young. The experiences we had and endured along the way while making memories that would last a lifetime. The things that we often sat around talking about on so many occasions and would laugh so hard we would be in tears. My mother felt that other people would enjoy some of our fondest memories from my childhood as she did her best to raise her children as a single parent most of the time. My family felt it was a blessing to be able to look back and laugh about it all, what my mother referred to as the "good old days". There are some stories you would not believe, but they a true some are funny and some are sad. My mother passed away on Thanksgiving day of 2006 so I am really trying to keep a promise that I made to her and keep our fondest and most cherished memories from my childhood and share it with the world. That is what my mother wanted me to do, I really hope you enjoy "Before We Get Old" (the good old days).
