Weinbaum first broke through with the hugely influential story "A Martian Odyssey," one of the first to depict an alien being in a somewhat sympathetic light. Download or read book 7 best short stories by Stanley G Weinbaum written by Stanley G. Weinbaum and published by Tacet Books. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1930s, when Stanley G. Weinbaum began writing science fiction, the genre was considered immature, of little artistic value. The stories so far were full of adventures and heroism, but there was little commitment to the depth of the characters and the treatment of science in the narratives. Weinbaum has brought the exact opposite of this to the genre: his stories are rich in scientific content, his characters are realistic and women are not relegated to the role of hero objects. Critic August Nemo selected seven short stories from this author for you to enjoy the best of science fiction. This book contains: - A Martian Odyssey - The Adaptative Ultimate - Parasite Planet - Pygmalion's Spectacles - The Mad Moon - Redemption Cairn - The Lotus Eaters

After his home is destroyed he sets out to reach the American settlement of Erotia. Their fight is interrupted though by a Doughpot, a giant blob of plasma that devours everything in its wake including Patricia's home. Unfortunately danger is waiting for them both. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Martian Odyssey is a science fiction short story by Stanley G. Weinbaum originally published in the July 1934 issue of Wonder Stories. It was Weinbaum's second published story (in 1933 he had sold a romantic novel, The Lady Dances, to King Features Syndicate under the pseudonym Marge Stanley[1]), and remains his best known. It was followed four months later by a sequel, "Valley of Dreams". These are the only stories by Weinbaum set on Mars. The story immediately established Weinbaum as a leading figure in the field. Isaac Asimov states that Weinbaum's "easy style and his realistic description of extraterrestrial scenes and life-forms were better than anything yet seen, and the science fiction reading public went mad over him." The story "had the effect on the field of an exploding grenade. With this single story, Weinbaum was instantly recognized as the world's best living science fiction writer, and at once almost every writer in the field tried to imitate him." Before, aliens had been nothing more than plot devices to help or hinder the hero. Weinbaum's creations, like the pyramid-builder and the cart creatures, have their own reasons for existing. Also, their logic is not human logic, and humans cannot always puzzle out their motivations. Tweel itself was one of the first characters (arguably the first) who satisfied John W. Campbell's famous challenge: "Write me a creature who thinks as well as a man, or better than a man, but not like a man."

At the time, he was completely unaware of the extent of the disaster, although it looked bad enough to him in all truth!
