Download or read book The Best Moment When We First Met written by Yan Xi and published by Funstory. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When I was very young, there was a little boy. We didn't know each other, but I still can't forget his appearance. He stood in the square with the white pigeons beside him. Holding one of them in his arms, he stood on tiptoe and raised his hands in the air. He let the white pigeon fly away. It was a warm and beautiful picture. From that moment on, I fell in love with that little boy, but I only met him once. " Mu Xiangnan felt that her description was very familiar, so he turned on his computer and took out a photo of himself as a child to show her. Liu Xia cheered in pleasant surprise, "Mu Xiangnan, how did you get this photo?" "This is the picture of the little boy when he released the white pigeon." This little boy is me. " Liu Xia looked at Mu Xiangnan in shock, and then, tears streamed his face. "Mu Xiangnan, it turns out that we've met a long time ago, and it turns out that I've already fallen in love with you."

Book excerpt: How is it possible that the one guy Jenny falls for is totally off limits? March isn’t usually Jenny’s month. For one thing, it’s too dark and gray. For another, her sister, Gail, died two years ago in March after being hit by a drunk driver, a blow her family hasn’t yet recovered from. But March is also when she first sees Rob. He’s new in school, and although Jenny doesn’t know who he is yet, she can’t look away when they pass each other in the halls. She knows there’s something between them, and he seems to know it too, until a chance conversation reveals something terrible: Rob’s mother was the driver who killed Gail. Even as Jenny tries to pull away from Rob, she’s secretly glad about his stubborn insistence that they be friends despite their pasts. If Jenny and Rob become friends—or more—is she betraying her family? Can she and Rob find a way to transcend the tragedies in both their pasts and hold on to each other?

Book How to Fall in Love with Anyone

Download or read book How to Fall in Love with Anyone written by Mandy Len Catron and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-06-27 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A beautifully written and well-researched cultural criticism as well as an honest memoir” (Los Angeles Review of Books) from the author of the popular New York Times essay, “To Fall in Love with Anyone, Do This,” explores the romantic myths we create and explains how they limit our ability to achieve and sustain intimacy. What really makes love last? Does love ever work the way we say it does in movies and books and Facebook posts? Or does obsessing over those love stories hurt our real-life relationships? When her parents divorced after a twenty-eight year marriage and her own ten-year relationship ended, those were the questions that Mandy Len Catron wanted to answer. In a series of candid, vulnerable, and wise essays that takes a closer look at what it means to love someone, be loved, and how we present our love to the world, “Catron melds science and emotion beautifully into a thoughtful and thought-provoking meditation” (Bookpage). She delves back to 1944, when her grandparents met in a coal mining town in Appalachia, to her own dating life as a professor in Vancouver. She uses biologists’ research into dopamine triggers to ask whether the need to love is an innate human drive. She uses literary theory to show why we prefer certain kinds of love stories. She urges us to question the unwritten scripts we follow in relationships and looks into where those scripts come from. And she tells the story of how she decided to test an experiment that she’d read about—where the goal was to create intimacy between strangers using a list of thirty-six questions—and ended up in the surreal situation of having millions of people following her brand-new relationship. “Perfect fodder for the romantic and the cynic in all of us” (Booklist), How to Fall in Love with Anyone flips the script on love. “Clear-eyed and full of heart, it is mandatory reading for anyone coping with—or curious about—the challenges of contemporary courtship” (The Toronto Star).

As a senior at West Point, Harold Earls dreamed of summiting Mount Everest after graduation and bringing awareness to the issue of PTSD in soldiers and veterans. But as a novice mountain climber and newlywed, could he really leave his wife, Rachel, on the other side of the world to pursue such a dangerous quest? After all, Rachel’s dream was to be a wife and mother. She knew that her husband’s audacious goal might lead to her to give up everything. Download or read book The Four Loves written by C. S. Lewis and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-20 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Four Loves is a 1960 book by C. S. Lewis which explores the nature of love from a Christian and philosophical perspective through thought experiments. The book was based on a set of radio talks from 1958 which had been criticized in the U.S. at the time for their frankness about sex. C.S. Lewis examines storge or empathy love; philia, friendship love; eros, romantic love; and agape, or God love. Excerpt: "GOD is love," says St. John. When I first tried to write this book I thought that his maxim would provide me with a very plain highroad through the whole subject. I thought I should be able to say that human loves deserved to be called loves at all just in so far as they resembled that Love which is God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a marked revival of interest among philosophers in the topic of friendship. This collection of fifteen articles is the first to make some of the best recent work on friendship readily accessible. The book is divided into three sections. The first centers on the nature of friendship, the difference between friendship and other personal loves, and the importance of friendship in the individual's life. The second section discusses the moral significance of friendship and the response of various ethical theories and theorists (Aristotelian, Christian, Kantian, and consequentialist) to the phenomenon of friendship. The last section deals with the importance of personal and civic friendship in a good society. Badhwar's introduction is a comprehensive critical discussion of the issues raised by the essays: it relates them to each other, as well as to historical and contemporary discussions not included in the anthology, thus providing the reader with an integrated overview of the essays and their place in the larger philosophical picture.

It is not a survey of the traditional divisions of philosophy--metaphysics, epistemology, phenomenology, ethics, politics, and aesthetics. It is, however, a process of doing philosophy that takes up some of the basic questions and problems that we will all encounter in life--sooner or later. It is also an application of the Socratic method of teaching and learning that develop habits of independent, critical, and reflective thinking. It is a series of Socratic seminars on the Great Books by the greatest faculty of the Western world and a process that illustrates how to pass from the world of work, need, and empirical science into "the world of all things" (beings) that Being provides

Book On Life s Journey

Download or read book On Life s Journey written by Daniel A. Lindley and published by Chiron Publications. This book was released on 2006 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: C.G. Jung wrote in The Development of Personality, "In every adult there lurks a child--an eternal child, something that is always becoming, is never completed, and calls for unceasing care, attention and education. That is the part of the human personality that wants to develop and become whole." In this reflection on life's journey, Daniel A. Lindley applies the insights gleaned from many years of study of literature and psychoanalysis to show how we are "always becoming" and always obligated to care for that archetypal child. Drawing upon psychological truths expressed by Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Eliot and others, Lindley illuminates the process of individuation through personal experience, art and archetype. From birth to old age, he demonstrates, even in our separateness we share an archetypal ground. Thus, at any point in our lives, "the path we walk is not unknown; it has purpose and direction. We are living out stories that existed long before we did, and will be there long after we are gone." This deeply personal memoir folds time and space, poignantly bridging one man's life and humanity's distant past with grace, wit, and quiet perception. - W. Raymond Johnson, PhD, Director, Epigraphic Survey, Oriental Institute, University of Chicago DANIEL LINDLEY, PhD, LCSW has degrees from Yale, Harvard, Florida State, and Loyola University of Chicago. Formerly a school teacher and professor of English, he is a training analyst in the C. G. Jung Institute of Chicago and is in private practice. He is also the author of This Rough Magic: The Life of Teaching.

Book Winston S Churchill Never Despair 1945 1965

Download or read book Winston S Churchill Never Despair 1945 1965 written by Martin Gilbert and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2015-04-06 with total page 1114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final volume of the acclaimed official biography: “A meticulously detailed and annotated account of Churchill’s declining years . . . A contemporary classic” (Foreign Affairs). The eighth and final volume of Winston S. Churchill’s official biography begins with the defeat of Germany in 1945 and chronicles the period up to his death nearly twenty years later. It sees him first at the pinnacle of his power, leader of a victorious Britain. In July 1945 at Potsdam, Churchill, Stalin, and Truman aimed to shape postwar Europe. But upon returning home, was thrown out of office in the general election. Though out of office, Churchill worked to restore the fortunes of Britain’s Conservative Party while warning the world of Communist ambitions, urging the reconciliation of France and Germany, pioneering the concept of a united Europe, and seeking to maintain the close link between Britain and the United States. In October 1951, Churchill became prime minister for the second time. The Great Powers were navigating a precarious peace at the dawn of the nuclear age. With the election of Eisenhower and the death of Stalin, he worked for a new summit conference to improve East-West relations; but in April of 1955, ill health and pressure from colleagues forced him to resign. In retirement Churchill completed his acclaimed four-volume History of the English-Speaking Peoples and watched as world conflicts continued, still convinced they could be resolved by statesmanship. “Never despair” remained his watchword, and his faith, until the end. “A milestone, a monument, a magisterial achievement . . . rightly regarded as the most comprehensive life ever written of any age.” —Andrew Roberts, historian and author of The Storm of War “The most scholarly study of Churchill in war and peace ever written.” —Herbert Mitgang, The New York Times

Book Children of the Crisis

Download or read book Children of the Crisis written by Annika Lems and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-09-30 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year, thousands of young people on the run from war and persecution, or escaping poverty and chronic instability, make their way to Europe without their parents. Embarking on long and often dangerous journeys, they have either become separated from their families on the way or set out on their own. In recent years, the number of unaccompanied minors arriving in Europe has risen drastically. It has led to a major shift in perception in European countries, initiating a wealth of policies and infrastructures targeted specifically at unaccompanied child refugees. This book investigates the emergence of the unaccompanied child refugee as a ‘crisis figure’. It shows how the sense of exceptionality attached to this figure translates into ambiguous and at times extremely contradictory social practices that have far-reaching effects on the lives of refugee youth. By bringing together ethnographically driven research on unaccompanied minors in some of the core arrival and transit countries in or into Europe, it shows the divergent ways ideas on childhood, deservingness and vulnerability are interpreted, lived, and grappled with on the ground. By laying the focus on young people’s own experiences and perspectives, it establishes a deeper understanding of the ways unaccompanied asylum seekers live and make sense of shifting social terrains. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.
