Book excerpt: In recognition of the 10th anniversary of the attack in Benghazi, a noted Libya expert and eyewitness to the attack provides a startling reconsideration of one of the defining controversies of our era. Ten years after an attack on the US diplomatic mission in Benghazi killed Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, cries of "Benghazi!" still echo across America. But instead of a landmark event to be taken seriously, it has become a punchline, an empty word, or a code for controversy and political theatre. In this thrilling retelling, Ethan Chorin reveals Benghazi as a watershed moment in American history, one that helped create the world America lives in today: polarized, fearful, and dangerously unstable. Here, Benghazi is not a story contained in 13 hours, but a decades-long history beginning with the rise of Muammar Gaddafi, stretching through 9/11, the War on Terror, and the Arab Spring, and reaching into the present day, as the impact of the attack and ensuing controversy remain visible in America and around the world. Chorin draws on his own bone-chilling experience during the Benghazi attack, his expertise as a former diplomat and scholar of Libyan history, and new interviews with Libyan insiders, eyewitnesses, and key players like Hillary Clinton and Ben Rhodes. With this ambitious, engaging narrative, Chorin makes clear why Benghazi still matters so much ten years later—and why we can’t afford to continue overlooking and misunderstanding it.

Book excerpt: The harrowing, true account from the brave men on the ground who fought back during the Battle of Benghazi. 13 Hours presents, for the first time ever, the true account of the events of September 11, 2012, when terrorists attacked the US State Department Special Mission Compound and a nearby CIA station called the Annex in Benghazi, Libya. A team of six American security operators fought to repel the attackers and protect the Americans stationed there. Those men went beyond the call of duty, performing extraordinary acts of courage and heroism, to avert tragedy on a much larger scale. This is their personal account, never before told, of what happened during the thirteen hours of that now-infamous attack. 13 Hours sets the record straight on what happened during a night that has been shrouded in mystery and controversy. Written by New York Times bestselling author Mitchell Zuckoff, this riveting book takes readers into the action-packed story of heroes who laid their lives on the line for one another, for their countrymen, and for their country. 13 Hours is a stunning, eye-opening, and intense book--but most importantly, it is the truth. Book excerpt: On September 11, 2012, a squad of armed militants in Libya attacked the American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, killing U.S. ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other American diplomats. Although the vicious attack was initially reported as a protest against an anti-Islamic video, later evidence suggested that it may have been a coordinated terrorist attack—perhaps even tied to al-Qaeda. Readers of The Benghazi Report will find many of the revelations shocking. Did the White House manipulate the facts? Why was the disclosure of information so unnecessarily slow? What is the connection between the mysterious deaths of fifteen Libyans who had been assisting the FBI’s investigation and a trail of incompetence left by foreign governments unwilling cooperate? Were the attacks were preventable? Featuring an introduction by bestselling author Roger Stone, this report represents a landmark in the ongoing struggle for more transparency from the U.S. government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Benghazi crisis that occurred exactly 11 years after September 11, 2001 led to the loss of the U.S. ambassador, Christopher Stevens and, hence, stands as one of the worst attacks against the U.S. This book goes beyond the events of September 11, 2012. It explores what went wrong; the things that could have been prevented; the best kept secrets of CIA operations abroad; and presents recommendations that may avoid the loss of more lives as the inevitable war against terror rages on. The first chapter presents more of a background analysis giving a backdrop of the growing tension between various nations. The attacks that occurred on the September 11 may be pegged on some issues that may have been immediate, but the root causes go way back in time. An in-depth look at Libya and Benghazi is given in the second chapter with an aim of presenting a vivid picture of the factors that may have led to the development of unrest and revolt. The next chapters focus their attention to Benghazi, the magnificent Annex, the American ambassador, the overrun, gunfighter road and the counterattack. It takes more than a mere description of tragedies to help readers learn from the mistakes that occur during terror attacks. For every government agent who might be involved in saving lives - or conveying critical intelligence - or knows someone who is involved in U.S. foreign relations - here is the book that encompasses important aspects that they should not miss. This book is written in a modern, conversational style. It is easy to read, yet its message is solid, accurate, and greatly informed.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling inside account of the attack against the U.S. diplomatic and intelligence outposts in Benghazi, Libya. On the night of September 11, 2012, the American diplomatic mission at Benghazi, Libya, came under ferocious attack by a heavily armed group of Islamic terrorists. The prolonged firefight, and the attack hours later on a nearby CIA outpost, resulted in the deaths of four Americans, including the American ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, the Information Officer, Sean Smith, and two former Navy SEALs, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty, working for the Central Intelligence Agency. After the fall of Qaddafi, Benghazi was transformed into a hotbed of fundamentalist fervor and a den of spies for the northern half of the African continent. Moreover, it became the center of gravity for terrorist groups strategically situated in the violent whirlwinds of the Arab Spring. On the eleventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks against the United States, a group of heavily armed Islamic terrorists had their sights set on the U.S. diplomatic and intelligence presence in the city. Based on the exclusive cooperation of eyewitnesses and confidential sources within the intelligence, diplomatic, and military communities, Fred Burton and Samuel M. Katz reveal for the first time the terrifying twelve-hour ordeal confronted by Ambassador Christopher Stevens, Sean Smith, his Diplomatic Security (DS) contingent, and the CIA security specialists who raced to rescue them. More than just the minute-by-minute narrative of a desperate last stand in the midst of an anarchic rebellion, Under Fire is an inspiring testament to the bravery and selflessness of the men and women who put their country first while serving in one of the most dangerous regions in the world.

Download or read book The Benghazi Attack written by J.D. Rockefeller and published by J.D. Rockefeller. This book was released on 2016-01-06 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have decided to read this book, then you probably have heard about the Benghazi attack or you at least wanted to learn something about that incident. It took place way back in 2012 when the Islamic militant attacked the diplomatic compound of America in Benghazi and killed many people including J. Christopher Stevens, who was the U.S. ambassador at that time, not to mention those who were injured as well. The said attack was then called the "Battle of Benghazi" as a second assault happened in a different compound.Due to that incident, United States increased security especially in the military as well as in diplomatic facilities worldwide. Aside from that, they also put effort in investigating it and discovering the root cause as well as the persons behind it. Although the reports initially stated that the attack was a spontaneous one, it was later determined as a planned one based on what the suspect, named Ahmed Abu Khattala, stated. The Benghazi attack has also been made into several movies, showing the different sides of the story and the story of different people who witnessed the said incident. Some posted the thoughts that they have in mind while some decided to stick with the news. Whatever it is, there is no doubt that the public is focusing attention on this incident once again. Although the incident happened way back in 2012 and although some people have covered it up, it has been gaining the interest of the public again lately. In fact, some of the truths behind it are slowly showing up. In case you wanted to know more about it, then continue on reading the book.

Several hours later, a second assault targeted a different compound about one mile away, killing two CIA contractors, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen Doherty. Ten others were also injured in the attacks. The United States immediately increased security worldwide at diplomatic and military facilities and began investigating the Benghazi attack. In the aftermath of the attack, State Department officials were criticized for denying requests for additional security at the consulate prior to the attack. As Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton subsequently took responsibility for the security lapses. Initially, it was reported by the media the Benghazi attack was a spontaneous protest triggered by an anti-Muslim video, Innocence of Muslims. Subsequent investigations determined that there was no such protest and that the attacks were premeditated, though captured suspect Ahmed Abu Khattala stated that the assault was in retaliation for the video. On August 6, 2013, it was reported that the U.S. had filed criminal charges against several individuals, including militia leaderAhmed Abu Khattala, for alleged involvement in the attacks. Khattala has been described by Libyan and U.S. officials as the Benghazi leader of Ansar al-Sharia, which was listed in January 2014 by the U.S. Department of State as a terror organization. On the weekend of June 14, 2014, U.S. special forces, in coordination with the FBI, captured Khattala in Libya. This book gives the details needed for you to come to your own conclusions about negligence, preparedness, and what to do in the future.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "[The contents of this report] should fundamentally change the way you view Benghazi." --Trey Gowdy, Committee Chairman, June, 2016 On September 11, 2012, an attack occurred against two US government facilities in Benghazi, Libya. As a result of these attacks, the US Ambassador to Libya, J. Christopher Stevens, died (the first US ambassador killed since 1979), as well as three other Americans. Controversy arose about whether the attacks were committed spontaneously or were premeditated, and whether the US government's response was adequate. Ten investigations followed into whether high-ranking US government officials, including Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, had acted improperly. The most important investigation was handled by the Republican-controlled US House Select Committee on Events Surrounding the 2012 Terrorist Attack in Benghazi. It issued nearly 1,000 pages in The Benghazi Report--with Additional and Minority Views in June 2016 and criticized the Obama Administration's handling of the attacks. It concluded that the State Department failed to protect US diplomats in Libya. Clinton, who at the time of the release of this report was the Democratic presidential candidate dismissed the findings of this report as did the Democrats on the House Select Committee in their minority report, included in the report.

On September 12th, 2012, Brandon Webb learned Glen Doherty, one of his closest friends and his former Navy SEAL teammate, was killed alongside Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and two other Americans when the U.S. State Department and CIA headquarters in Benghazi, Libya, were sieged in a shocking terrorist attack. For the next four months, Webb and his team at SOFREP.com, the world’s premier Special Ops website, embarked on a relentless investigation to understand exactly what happened to their countrymen, as well as the roles played by the Obama administration, State Department, and CIA. Drawing on unmatched sources, they spoke to individuals who would talk to no one else, including fellow Special Operations team members familiar with the African theatre, and to well-placed contacts in the Washington intelligence community. This is their report—an unforgettably gripping minute-by-minute narrative of the events and their aftermath as they really unfolded on that terrible day in Libya.

Book Benghazi the Attacks and the Lessons Learned

Download or read book Benghazi the Attacks and the Lessons Learned written by United States. Congress and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-09-07 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: more than 275 posts around the world. Ambassador Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone Woods, and Glen Doherty lost their lives on September 11, 2012, during terrorist attacks on the special mission in Benghazi. As a committee, we honor their service to our Nation and we grieve with their families, but we also resolve to take specific actions to prevent future incidents. We may not be able to prevent every single terrorist attack in the future, but we can-and we must-make sure that our embassies and employees, starting with those in high-risk, high-threat posts, are capable of withstanding such an attack. To that end, Secretary Clinton and the Department of State have embraced and agreed to implement all 29 of the Administrative Review Board's recommendations. Today we will hear more about the progress that the State Department has already made toward implementing many of these recommendations. But I would add that Congress is not without responsibility here. We also have an obligation to do our part to comply with the Administrative Review Board's recommendations. It is my intention to work with the members of the committee and the State Department in the coming months on legislation that will improve security and better protect our employees. One of the first and easiest things we can do is ensure that the State Department's contracting rules allow for sufficient flexibility to allow them to quickly make decisions where security is at risk and to hire local guards, not only on the basis of the lowest price technically acceptable, but also on a best-value basis, to ensure that we are not just checking the box when it comes to securing our buildings and protecting our people
