Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anniversary publication of the Belvedere The Belvedere in Vienna epitomizes the changes that have taken place over the course of three centuries in the concept of what constitutes a museum. Originally built by Prince Eugene of Savoy to enhance his prestige as a prince, under Maria Theresa, the Upper Belvedere became one of the world’s first public museums. The idea of presenting Austrian art in an international context, which in 1903 motivated the establishment of the Modern Gallery in the Lower Belvedere, remains the key objective of this world-famous cultural institution. In this critical homage, renowned authors explore enduring questions that transcend the different epochs, such as : What ordering concepts are evident in art presentation ? How contemporary were these presentations in an international context ? What kind of public were they aimed at ? Anniversary publication of the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere: a critical homage to a place of art with a diverse history spanning centuries Exhibition until January 7, 2024 With contributions from Johanna Aufreiter, Björn Blauensteiner, Brigitte Borchhardt-Birbaumer, Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann, Christiane Erharter, Nora Fischer, Anna Frasca-Rath, Antoinette Friedenthal, Martin Fritz, Thomas W. Book The First Modern Museums of Art

Download or read book The First Modern Museums of Art written by Carole Paul and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2012-11-16 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the first modern, public museums of art—civic, state, or national—appeared throughout Europe, setting a standard for the nature of such institutions that has made its influence felt to the present day. Although the emergence of these museums was an international development, their shared history has not been systematically explored until now. Taking up that project, this volume includes chapters on fifteen of the earliest and still major examples, from the Capitoline Museum in Rome, opened in 1734, to the Alte Pinakothek in Munich, opened in 1836. These essays consider a number of issues, such as the nature, display, and growth of the museums’ collections and the role of the institutions in educating the public. The introductory chapters by art historian Carole Paul, the volume’s editor, lay out the relationship among the various museums and discuss their evolution from private noble and royal collections to public institutions. In concert, the accounts of the individual museums give a comprehensive overview, providing a basis for understanding how the collective emergence of public art museums is indicative of the cultural, social, and political shifts that mark the transformation from the early-modern to the modern world. The fourteen distinguished contributors to the book include Robert G. W. Anderson, former director of the British Museum in London; Paula Findlen, Ubaldo Pierotti Professor of Italian History at Stanford University; Thomas Gaehtgens, director of the Getty Research Institute; and Andrew McClellan, dean of academic affairs and professor of art history at Tufts University. Book Dal Freud

Download or read book Dal Freud written by Stephanie Auer and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Salvador Dali and Sigmund Freud. The art of one is inconceivable without the theories of the other. They seem inexorably linked, even though their paths only crossed once: in London, in July 1938. Dali's memoris of Vienna, the birthplace of psychoanalysis, represent the starting point of this volume, which shines a light on the artist against the background of his complex family relationships and follows his life from his discovery of Freud's writings to his meeting with the founder of psychoanalysis in his London exil in 1938.

Book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art

Download or read book Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art written by Darius A. Spieth and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.

Book Spaces of Experience

Download or read book Spaces of Experience written by Charlotte Klonk and published by . This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating study of art gallery interiors examines the changing ideals and practices of galleries in Europe and North America from the 18th to the late 20th century. It offers a detailed account of the different displays that have been created—the colors of the background walls, lighting, furnishings, the height and density of the art works on show—and it traces the different scientific, political and commercial influences that lay behind their development. Charlotte Klonk shows that scientists like Hermann von Helmholtz and Wilhelm Wundt advanced theories of perception that played a significant role in justifying new modes of exhibiting. Equally important for the changing modes of exhibition in art galleries was what Michael Baxandall has called “the period eye,” a way of seeing informed by the impact of new fashions in interior decoration and by department store and shop window displays. The history of museum interiors, she argues, should be appreciated as a revealing chapter in the broader history of experience.

Book excerpt: "Hans Makart left his mark on his age like no other artist of the nineteenth century. He became the symbol of his time, which has gone down in history as the Makart Era. summoned to Vienna by the emperor as a talented young artist, his painting were popular among the rising bourgeoisie and were ultimately regarded as the measure of social recognition and reputation. Makart's free painterly use of color and light derives from French art, especially that of Eugene Delacroix. At the same time as Edouard Manet, Auguste Renoir, and Gustave Moreau he cultivated color as one of the core elements in his art. Through the accentuation of sensuality--of taste, eroticism, and a robust joie-de-vivre--he also struck the chord of decline and is thus a typical representative of the Age of Decadence. Makart was skilled in using the possibilities offered by new reproduction techniques to popularize his works and his own specific aesthetic. His images and theme became trademarks and reflections of his age and aroused national and international attention. Makart's artistic approach was open to experiment; it was evidenced in his intensive study of Richard Wagner's 'Ring de Nibelungen' and the architecture of Gottfried Semper, and it expressed itself in large-format painterly interpretations of the operas and in visionary architectural fantasies. Makart was highly respected internationally when he died in 1884 at the age of 44." --Jacket.
