Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written with a deep impression that the place and power of prayer in the Christian life is too little understood. I feel sure that as long as we look on prayer solely as the means of maintaining our own Christian life, we shall not know fully what it is meant to be. But when we learn to regard it as the highest part of the work entrusted to us, the root and strength of all other work, we shall see that we need nothing more than to study and practice the art of praying. If I have succeeded in pointing out the progressive teaching of our Lord in regard to prayer, and the distinct reference of His wonderful promises of His last night to the works we are to do in His name – to the greater works and the bearing of much fruit – we shall all admit that only when the church gives herself up to this holy work of intercession can she expect the power of Christ to manifest itself on her behalf. I pray that God will use this book to explain to some of His children the wonderful place of power and influence that He is waiting for them to occupy and that a weary world is waiting for too. - Andrew Murray

Book With Christ in the School of Prayer Updated

Download or read book With Christ in the School of Prayer Updated written by Kathie Baxter and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Andrew Murray skillfully takes us into Jesus' school of prayer. The book was written over a hundred years ago, but because it is completely biblical, it is also completely timeless. However, to make the truths that it contains more accessible, the book's original language has been updated to make it more clearly understood by modern readers. Here is an excerpt."The Father waits to hear every prayer of faith, to give us what we determine, and what we ask in Jesus' name. We have become so accustomed to limit the wonderful love and the large promises of our God that we cannot read the simplest and clearest statements of our Lord without the qualifying clauses by which we hedge them in and explain them away. If there is one thing I think the church needs to learn, it is that God intends for prayer to be answered, and that it has never entered the human mind what God will do for his child who devotes himself to believe that his prayer will be heard. God hears prayer. This is a universally acknowledged truth. But very few understand the meaning, or experience the power of it. If what I have written stirs my readers to read Jesus' words, and take his amazing promises simply and literally as they are written, my objective will have been achieved."The book is written in 31 short chapters, making it perfect to use as devotional material.

Download or read book A School of Prayer written by Pope Benedict XVI and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Edition Prayer is essential to the life of faith. In this superb book, based on Pope Benedict's weekly teaching, he examines the foundational principles of the life of prayer. Believers of various backgrounds and experience in prayer-from beginners to spiritually advanced-will be enriched by this spiritual masterpiece. Benedict begins considering what we can learn from the examples of prayer found in a wide range of cultures and eras. Next, he turns to the Bible's teaching about prayer, beginning with Abraham and moving though Moses, the prophets, the Psalms to the example of Jesus. With Jesus Christ, Pope Benedict considers not only the Lord's teaching about prayer, but also his example of how to pray, including the Our Father, his prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane, and prayers on the Cross. The prayers of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the early Church are also explored. Benedict also draws on insights from spiritual masters, the saints, and the Church's liturgy. He challenges readers to live their relationships with God "even more intensely, as it were, at a ಘschool of prayer'." Although Benedict provides a sweeping survey of great figures of prayer, his discussion centers on Jesus Christ and even invokes him in the study of prayer. "It is in fact in Jesus," writes Benedict, "that man becomes able to approach God in the depth and intimacy of the relationship of fatherhood and sonship. Together with the first disciples, let us now turn with humble trust to the Teacher and ask him: ಘLord, teach us to pray' (Lk 11:1)."

Book excerpt: Andrew Murray's book, With Christ in the School of Prayer, is a devotional and inspirational classic that has changed the lives of millions of believers. This life changing book will help you in your pursuit of spiritual growth as you follow hard after God. Listen to Murray himself: "Of all the promises connected with the command, ABIDE IN ME,' there is none higher, and none that sooner brings the confession, Not that I have already attained, or am already made perfect,' than this: If ye abide in me, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.' Power with God is the highest attainment of the life of full abiding." "And of all the traits of a life LIKE CHRIST there is none higher and more glorious than conformity to Him in the work that now engages Him without ceasing in the Father's presence--His all-prevailing intercession. The more we abide in Him, and grow unto His likeness, will His priestly life work in us mightily, and our life become what His is, a life that ever pleads and prevails for men." "May God open our eyes to see what the holy ministry of intercession is to which, as His royal priesthood, we have been set apart. May He give us a large and strong heart to believe what mighty influence our prayers can exert. And may all fear as to our being able to fulfil our vocation vanish as we see Jesus, living ever to pray, living in us to pray, and standing surety for our prayer-life." This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The disciples had been with Christ, and seen Him pray. They had learnt to understand something of the connection between His wondrous life in public, and His secret life of prayer. They had learnt to believe in Him as a Master in the art of prayer-none could pray like Him. And so they came to Him with the request, 'Lord, teach us to pray.' And in after years they would have told us that there were few things more wonderful or blessed that He taught them than His lessons on prayer. And now still it comes to pass, as He is praying in a certain place, that disciples who see Him thus engaged feel the need of repeating the same request, 'Lord, teach us to pray.' As we grow in the Christian life, the thought and the faith of the Beloved Master in His never-failing intercession becomes ever more precious, and the hope of being Like Christ in His intercession gains an attractiveness before unknown. And as we see Him pray, and remember that there is none who can pray like Him, and none who can teach like Him, we feel the petition of the disciples, 'Lord, teach us to pray, ' is just what we need. And as we think how all He is and has, how He Himself is our very own, how He is Himself our life, we feel assured that we have but to ask, and He will be delighted to take us up into closer fellowship with Himself, and teach us to pray even as He prays.

WITH CHRIST 5n tfje Srijool of DEGREESrager. Thirty-first Lesson. 'Pray without ceasing;' Or, A Life of Prayer. 'Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In everything givt thanka.'--1 Thess. T. 16, 17, 18. OUR Lord spake the parable of the widow and the unjust judge to teach us that men ought to pray always and not faint. As the widow persevered in seeking one definite thing, the parable appears to have reference to persevering prayer for some one blessing, when God delays or appears to refuse. The words in the Epistles, which speak of continuing instant in prayer, continuing in prayer and watching in the same, of praying always in the Spirit, appear more to refer to the whole life being one of prayer. As the soul is filling with the longing for the manifestation of God's glory to us and in us, through us and around us, and with the confidence that He hears the prayers of His children, the inmost life of the soul is continually rising upward in dependence and faith, in longing desire and trustful expectation. At the close of our meditations it will not be difficult to say what is needed to live such a life of prayer. The first thing is undoubtedly the entire sacrifice of the life to God's kingdom and glory. He who seeks to pray without ceasing because he wants to be very pious and good, will never attain to it . It is the forgetting of self and yielding ourselves to live for God and His honour that enlarges the heart, that teaches us to regard everything in the light of God and His will, and that instinctively recognises in everything around us the need of God's help and blessing, an opportunity for His being glorified. Because everything is weighed and tested by the one thing that fills the heart--the glory of God, and because the soul
