Book The Hunting Ecology of Arctic Foxes Alopex Lagopus Near Cape Churchill Manitoba

Download or read book The Hunting Ecology of Arctic Foxes Alopex Lagopus Near Cape Churchill Manitoba written by James Bahr and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several aspects of arctic fox hunting ecology were studied during the summers of 1985 and 1986. Pup development was observed at one den during the summer of 1985. Pup development was observed on an ad libitum basis. The pups' rapid behavioural maturation closely paralleled their rapid physical growth. As the pups matured, their responses to stimuli, their repertoire of behaviours and vocalizations, and their activity patterns changed. The pups expanded their repertoire of physical maneuvers as their strength and coordination increased. Physical and behavioural developments led to a maturation of predatory behaviours and skills of self preservation. The hunting ecology and food habits of adult arctic foxes were studied by following male foxes on hunts. Foxes hunted along similar routes each day but did not hunt in the same area twice consecutively. Foxes covered the greatest proportion of their distance and made the greatest proportion of their kills in the habitat that probably harboured the highest prey densities. They used their entire home ranges in June and July even when most Canada geese (Branta canadensis) and snow geese (Chen caerulescens) were concentrated in specific areas after late June. The foxes travelled at an average rate of 5.3 km/h and could cover 25 km or more during a day of hunting. When lemmings (Dicrostonyx groenlandicus) were abundant during 1985, the foxes averaged more attacks, kills and meals per time and per distance than in 1986 when lemmings were less abundant. Overall, the foxes were successful in 87% of capture attempts for lemmings, in 64% of attempts for defended goose nests and in all attempts on shorebird, duck, passerine and ptarmigan nests. In 1985, lemmings accounted for the majority of the adult foxes' diet before goose hatch. Passerine clutches made up most of the remainder and the foxes rarely ate cached food during hunts. In 1986, shorebird eggs and eggs from caches accounted for the majority of the foxes' diet. After goose hatch in both years, goslings and adult geese became important food items but the foxes did not abandon the food sources they utilized before hatch.

Book Great Auk Islands a field biologist in the Arctic

Download or read book Great Auk Islands a field biologist in the Arctic written by Tim Birkhead and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the author's research expeditions in the Canadian Arctic, this book is for professional and amateur ornithologists, students in ecology and animal behaviour. The Arctic is one of the world's last great wildernesses: a place of outstanding beauty, history and extraordinary wildlife in which seabirds form an important component of a rich, marine environment. Like many other remote regions, it is under threat from human activities, but to protect it we need to understand it. That understanding can come only through scientific research and the central threat of this book is to examine how such research is actually done. It describes the business of conducting biological studies on seabirds in remote parts of eastern Canada. Several themes are engagingly interwoven: the sheer beauty of the Arctic environment, the intriguing biology of its wildlife, and the discovery and exploitation of enormous seabird colonies, including the destruction of the Great Auk. Tim Birkhead describes in personal detail the different facets of research and brings to life both the difficulties and the excitement of working in the Arctic. What is it like setting up a camp for four months on a remote and uninhabited island not far from the North Pole? How does it feel to commute daily by inflatable boat amidst icebergs to study-areas located on towering cliffs, set between ice-blue glaciers? What do you do when a Polar bear decides that you have invaded its Arctic home? Why are the seabird colonies in the high Arctic so enormous? What do we know about lifestyle of the extinct Great Auk? In 1992 Canada's legendary cod fishery was finally destroyed - what are the consequences of this for other wildlife? These are just a few of the questions dealt with in this book. Our future as a species depends upon science and the understanding it brings of the world we live in. The work of scientists often appears obscure, but in this book, Tim Birkhead has used his experience of seven summers in the Arctic to write an accessible and straightforward account of how research is actually done in the field. The text is enriched by David Quinn's illustrations, and by numerous photographs in both black and white, and colour.

Book The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids

Download or read book The Biology and Conservation of Wild Canids written by David W. Macdonald and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2004-06-24 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No group of wild mammals so universally captures the emotions of people world-wide than do wild canids. That emotion can be enchantment and fascination, but it can also be loathing, because the opportunism that is the hallmark of the dog family also leads them into conflict with humans. In the developed world at least, the fascination with wild canids doubtless stems from people's captivation with domestic dogs - everybody feels they are an expert on canids! While most people may be familiar with only the better known members of the dog family, such as the grey wolf and the red fox, there are in fact 36 species of wolves, dogs, jackals and foxes. They attract hugely disproportionate interest from academics, conservationists, veterinarians, wildlife managers and the general public. This book brings together in single volume an astonishing synthesis of research done in the last twenty years and is the first truly compendious synthesis on wild canids. Beginning with a complete account of all 36 canid species, there follow six review chapters that emphasise topics most relevant to canid conservation science, including evolution and systematics, behavioural ecology, population genetics, diseases, conflict/control of troublesome species, and conservation tools. Fifteen detailed case studies then delve deeply into the very best species investigations currently available written by all the leading figures in the field. Much of the material is previously unpublished and will make fascinating reading far beyond the confines of canid specialists. These chapters portray the unique attributes of wild canids, their fascinating (and conflictive) relationship with man, and suggestions for future research and conservation measures for the Canidae. While most canid species are widespread and thrive in human dominated landscapes, several are in severe jeopardy; habitat loss, illegal hunting, persecution by farmers and disease all imperil dwindling populations. A final chapter analyses the requirements of, and approaches to, practical conservation, with lessons that go far beyond the dog family. It concentrates particular attention on priorities for the protection of the most threatened canid species, including the red wolf, African wild dog, Ethiopian wolf, Island fox and Darwin's fox. The wild canids provide examples that will thrill the evolutionary biologists and theoretician, enthral the natural historian and challenge the conservationist and wildlife manager. Anybody interested in evolutionary and behavioural biology, in mammals, in the environment, or in conservation will find much that is new and enriching in this book.
