Book excerpt: Repairing or strengthening failing metallic structures traditionally involves using bulky and heavy external steel plates that often pose their own problems. The plates are generally prone to corrosion and overall fatigue. Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP), a composite material made of a polymer matrix reinforced with fibers, offers a great alternativ

Book Performance of Steel Columns Exposed to Fire

Download or read book Performance of Steel Columns Exposed to Fire written by Vute Chandrasekaran and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steel columns are used in many high rise as well as industrial constructions. These columns act as the main load carrying member. In this paper results of analytical studies carried out to evaluate the performance mechanisms of steel columns exposed to fire have been presented. The finite element method is used to analyse the buckling behaviour of geometrically perfect steel columns at elevated temperatures. The column behaviour up to collapse was investigated considering geometric as well as material non-linearities. The analysis includes non-linear material characteristics as a function of temperature. The importance of proper idealisation of stress strain temperature behaviour has been brought out. The buckling characteristics of columns have been analysed for continuous stress-strain-temperature material behaviour as well as elasto-plastic bilinear idealisations. The influence of slenderness ratios was found to control the buckling behaviour of columns at elevated temperatures. Solutions have been provided to evaluate critical stresses of columns with different end fixity conditions. The factors which control the performance of columns exposed to fire have been discussed Comparisons have been made with other analytical approaches and available experimental data. It is believed that the fire safety engineer will be benefited from these studies.

Book Structural Design for Fire Safety

Download or read book Structural Design for Fire Safety written by Andrew H. Buchanan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structural Design for Fire Safety, 2nd edition Andrew H. Buchanan, University of Canterbury, New Zealand Anthony K. Abu, University of Canterbury, New Zealand A practical and informative guide to structural fire engineering This book presents a comprehensive overview of structural fire engineering. An update on the first edition, the book describes new developments in the past ten years, including advanced calculation methods and computer programs. Further additions include: calculation methods for membrane action in floor slabs exposed to fires; a chapter on composite steel-concrete construction; and case studies of structural collapses. The book begins with an introduction to fire safety in buildings, from fire growth and development to the devastating effects of severe fires on large building structures. Methods of calculating fire severity and fire resistance are then described in detail, together with both simple and advanced methods for assessing and designing for structural fire safety in buildings constructed from structural steel, reinforced concrete, or structural timber. Structural Design for Fire Safety, 2nd edition bridges the information gap between fire safety engineers, structural engineers and building officials, and it will be useful for many others including architects, code writers, building designers, and firefighters. Key features: • Updated references to current research, as well as new end-of-chapter questions and worked examples. •Authors experienced in teaching, researching, and applying structural fire engineering in real buildings. • A focus on basic principles rather than specific building code requirements, for an international audience. An essential guide for structural engineers who wish to improve their understanding of buildings exposed to severe fires and an ideal textbook for introductory or advanced courses in structural fire engineering.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled BEHAVIOUR OF HIGH STRENGTH STEEL COLUMNS AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES Submitted by Ju Chen for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in April 2007 In this study, the structural behaviour of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures is investigated. The current fire resistant design rules for steel columns in most of the specifications are generally based on the investigation of hot-rolled steel having normal strength. Although similarities between the conventional normal strength and high strength steel exist, there is sufficient diversity in their mechanical properties for different treatments in design. Therefore, there is a need to develop the design rules of high strength steel columns at elevated temperatures. Material properties play an important role in the performance of steel structural members. Hence, an extensive material test program was first performed on high strength steel at elevated temperatures. The high strength steel includes cold-formed steel, stainless steel as well as quenched and tempered carbon steel. Structural carbon steel having normal strength was also tested for comparison. The mechanical properties and stress-strain curves of the tested steel were obtained and compared with predictions from the American, Australian, British and European specifications. In addition, equations predicting the mechanical properties and stress-strain curve model for the tested materials at elevated temperatures were proposed. The column behaviour of cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate web stiffeners at normal room temperature was investigated. The test results were compared with the design strengths obtained using the direct strength method. An accurate and reliable finite element model of cold-formed steel built-up columns was developed and verified against the test results. A parametric study was carried out using the verified finite element model. Design rules for cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns at normal room and elevated temperatures modified from the direct strength method were proposed. The behaviour of cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures has been investigated using finite element method. The suitability of the effective width method and direct strength method for cold-formed steel lipped channel columns at elevated temperatures was evaluated. The behaviour of quenched and tempered high strength carbon steel columns at elevated temperatures was also investigated. The finite element analysis results were compared with the design strengths using the American, Australian and European specifications. Generally, it is shown that the effective width method and direct strength method using the reduced material properties conservatively predicted the column strengths.
