Book excerpt: "In order to understand and control the deportment of common impurity elements in the Pt(IV)-Pd(II)-HCl-8-hydroxyquinoline (TN 1911)$ sp{ rm a}$ system, their solvent extraction chemistry in chloride solution has been studied. The investigated elements were Fe(III), Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II), Pb(II), Sn(IV), Ag(I), As(V), Sb(V), Bi(III), Se(IV) and Te(IV). Extraction experiments carried out using multi-element and single element feed solutions helped to elucidate the extraction behaviour of the elements with the extractant TN 1911. From the collected data it was deduced that the majority formed anionic chlorocomplexes and extracted via the ion-pair mechanism involving the protonated extractant. Consequently, scrubbing procedures were developed to control the deportment of these elements. These scrubbing steps were then incorporated into a tentative flowsheet which was simulated in a batch-wise fashion in the laboratory. The most contaminating elements were found to be Zn(II), Pb(II), Ag(I), Te(IV), Se(IV) and Bi(III). The first five were effectively scrubbed with 2.0M HCl whereas Bi(III) could only be scrubbed with 2.0M H$ sb2$SO$ sb4$ at A/O ratios of $>$3:1. Book excerpt: The solvent extraction of palladium(II), platinum(II), platinum(IV), rhodium(III), iridium(III) and iridium(IV) from hydrochloric acid solutions by some dialkyl sulphoxides of the types R2SO, RR'SO and R'2SO, where R=alkyl and R'=cycloalkyl, was investigated. The order of extraction of these metals by 0.50 M di-n-hexyl sulphoxide in xylene from solutions containing 1 to 6M hydrochloric acid was found to be Pd(II)> Pt(II)> Ir(IV)> Pt(IV)> Rh(III)> Ir(III). Metal-distribution studies suggest that iridium(IV) and platinum(IV) are extracted in the form of ion-pairs such as [formula] and [formula], where L=dialkyl sulphoxide. In the case of palladium(II) and probably platinum(II) also, the sulphoxide apparently displaces one or two of the chloride ligands from the chlorometallate anion [formula], and the distribution data are consistent with the extraction of PdCl2L2 at low hydrochloric acid concentration (1-2 M) and [formula] at higher concentrations (4-6 M). The slow rates of extraction of rhodium(III) and iridium(III) from solutions containing the [formula] species suggests a ligand substitution reaction for these metals also, with the probably formation of species such as [formula] and [formula] in the organic phase. Comparison of the uv-visible spectra of the metal- loaded organic phases with those obtained using tri=n=octylammonium chloride as extractant confirms that simple chlorometallate anions are present in the dialkyl sulphoxide extracts only for platinum(IV) and iridium(IV).

Book excerpt: In this paper we describe some aspects of the solvent-extraction chemistry of di-n-hexyl sulphoxide (DnHSO) that are of relevance to the refining of platinum-group metals (PGMs). Although DnHSO is not used as such in the processing of PGMs, it can nevertheless be formed in situ by the oxidation of the parent di-n-hexyl sulphide (DnHS), which is used commercially as an extractant for palladium. The impact of the presence of DnHSO in PGM refining circuits may be favourable or unfavourable. Thus, the strong extraction of ferric iron from hydrochloric acid solutions by DnHSO results in this metal being co-extracted with palladium when DnHS is used in the recovery of the latter metal. Fortunately, however, the iron can be selectively washed out of the loaded organic phase by water, thereby providing a convenient exit from the process for this impurity. On the other hand, dialkyl sulphoxides are also able to extract rhodium from concentrated hydrochloric acid media, apparently by the formation of complexes such as (L2.H3O+)RhCl4L2-, where L = dialkyl sulphoxide. This complex is difficult to strip, and contributes to a gradual build-up of PGM values in the organic phase. Finally, the presence of small quantities of DnHSO in recycled organic solutions of DnHS causes a fortuitous increase in the extraction rate of palladium(II).

A high molecular weight tertiary or quaternary amine solvent is used to extract the anionic chloro complexes from the aqueous feed. Any secondary PGM's in the aqueous feed are hydrolysed to complexes which are neutral or cationic. This conditioning is done by boiling 3 to 4 hours below pH 3. The loaded solvent is scrubbed with acid. Palladium and/or gold is stripped with thiourea solution and perchlorite solution is used to strip the platinum but thiocyanate can also be used. Alternatively dilute perchlorite can be used to strip platinum, strong perchlorite for palladium and the gold is then stripped with sodium carbonate solution. Further claims specified the use of resins instead of solvents but no resin details specified. Solvent used most was 5% alamine 336 in solves 150. Other claims included precipitating palladium in strip solution with ethylene and platinum with hydrogen.
