Book Perceptions of PETE Students about Boys and Girls Participation in Elementary and High School Physical Education

Download or read book Perceptions of PETE Students about Boys and Girls Participation in Elementary and High School Physical Education written by Michael Cicchillitti and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scholars have advocated the need to explore the nature and role of teacher beliefs in teacher education (O'Sullivan, 1996, 2003; Wilson & Berne, 1999; Zeichner, 1999) as they can influence teacher behaviour (Pajares, 1992). Unfortunately, research has shown that many in-service physical education (PE) teachers display gender-biased behaviours, beliefs and practices when interacting with students in a PE setting (Davis, 2003), which in turn, may affect students' participation in PE. However, few studies have investigated these issues from a physical education teacher education (PETE) student belief perspective. This qualitative case study explored how PETE students perceived the participation of girls and boys in PE at the elementary and high school level. Additionally, it attempted to identify any gender-biased beliefs that PETE students may hold about girls' and boys' participation in PE. The PETE students were six females and six males from the same university PETE program in Eastern Canada. Guided by the theory of occupational socialization (Lawson, 1983a, 1983b), data were collected through interviews, questionnaires and checklists. Thematic analyses were performed on verbatim transcriptions of interviews. Four themes were generated from the data: PE participation, PE activity preferences, experiences before PETE and experiences during PETE. The results revealed that female and male PETE students held both similar and different views towards girls' and boys' participation in elementary and high school PE. Additionally, some strong gender-role stereotypes emerged from their discussions. Training in qualitative methods, pilot work, and researcher reflexivity were employed to establish trustworthiness. Initial findings from this study may provide teacher educators with a deeper understanding of how some PETE students view the participation of girls and boys in PE. " --

Book Girls Gender and Physical Education

Download or read book Girls Gender and Physical Education written by Kimberly L. Oliver and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-24 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this powerfully argued and progressive study, Kimberly Oliver and David Kirk call for a radical reconstruction of the teaching of physical education for girls. Despite forty years of theorization and practical intervention, girls are still disengaging from physical education, dropping out of physical activity, and suffering negative consequences in terms of their health and well-being as a result. This book challenges the conventional narrative that girls are somehow to blame for this disengagement, and instead identifies important new ways of working with girls, developing a new pedagogical model for ‘girl-friendly’ physical education. The book locates our understanding of the experiences of girls in physical education in the broader context of young people’s multifaceted engagements with popular physical culture. Adopting an activist perspective, it outlines a programme of action informed by principled pragmatism and based on four critical elements: student-centred pedagogy; critical study of embodiment; inquiry-based physical education centred-in-action, and listening and responding to girls over time. It explores the implications of this new thinking for teaching, research, PETE and policy, and outlines a future agenda for work in this area. Offering a profound theoretical critique of contemporary research and practice, as well as a new programme of action, Girls, Gender and Physical Education is essential reading for all researchers, advanced students and practitioners with an interest in the issues of gender, equity and inclusion in physical education.

Book Perceptions of Seventh and Eighth Grade Girls Toward Coeducational Physical Education Classes in Five Middle Schools in East Tennessee

Download or read book Perceptions of Seventh and Eighth Grade Girls Toward Coeducational Physical Education Classes in Five Middle Schools in East Tennessee written by Shannon Clabo Sullivan and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the participation, perceptions, and preferences of seventh- and eighth-grade girls in coeducational and gender-separated physical education classes in five schools in East Tennessee. The participants in this study were seventh- and eighth-grade girls attending public schools in two East Tennessee counties. Participants completed a questionnaire pertaining to their physical education classes. Although 465 students were invited to participate in this study, only 241 students returned the permission form. This resulted in a 50% response rate. The findings were descriptive in nature, although basic analyses were calculated to identify any relationships among the different variables. The literature review examined adolescents' activity patterns, adolescents' self-esteem, gender equity issues, coeducational physical education versus same-gender physical education, and physical educators and their roles. The study revealed that most seventh- and eighth-grade girls dressed out for physical education and participated in coeducational physical education classes. A majority of the seventh- and eighth-grade girls preferred having a female physical education teacher. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls' participation rates did not decrease in a coeducational class setting. There was not a significant relationship between the gender of the physical education teacher and seventh- and eighth-grade girls' participation in physical education activities. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls agreed their physical education teachers were fun, fair, and easy to talk to. Seventh- and eighth-grade girls also agreed that their physical education teachers explained things well and motivated them to do their best. Having boys in physical education classes was not a major factor for girls in dressing out for physical education classes or in their participation rates.

Book Teaching Styles in Physical Education the Effects of Physical Activity Levels of Middle School Students with Different Motivation Types

Download or read book Teaching Styles in Physical Education the Effects of Physical Activity Levels of Middle School Students with Different Motivation Types written by Yongju Hwang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-determination theory (SDT) has been widely investigated to understand and change an individual's physical activity (PA) behavior in different settings (Deci & Ryan, 1985; 1991; 2000). The first purpose of this study was to examine if physical educators' teaching style influences student needs that affect student motivation, which in turn predict objectively measured student PA and MVPA levels (i.e., a serial mediator model). The second purpose was to explore moderating role of students' gender on those relationships. 313 students from three middle schools in Wisconsin completed Learning Climate Questionnaire modified from Williams and Deci (1996), Psychological Need Scale and Need Frustration Scale adopted from Chen et al. (2015), and Physical Education Questionnaire modified from (Aelterman et al., 2012) in a row to assess perceptions of autonomy-supportive teaching, experience of need satisfaction and need frustration, and motivational outcomes, respectively. Participants' PA and MVPA levels were recorded using a GT3X+ accelerometer (Actigraph, Pensacola, FL) for four consecutive PE lessons. It was found that although there was no gender effect on the relationships of SDT constructs, there was an indirect mediating effects of competence satisfaction and intrinsic motivation between autonomous teaching style and the students' objectively measured PA and MVPA levels. The results showed that PE teachers' autonomous teaching behavior is effective to promote students' objectively measured PA behavior during physical education lessons. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to how to provide autonomous teaching to students efficiently in the PE setting.

Book Student Teacher Relationship Quality Research Past Present and Future volume II

Download or read book Student Teacher Relationship Quality Research Past Present and Future volume II written by Claudio Longobardi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-06-28 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of Robert Pianta's 2001 handbook on the quality of the teacher-student relationship, much has been accomplished and research contributions have multiplied from different authors and countries. This testifies to the richness and continuous evolution of this field of research. The quality of the teacher-student relationship has been recognized as an important factor in the psychological development of students and seems to increase their adjustment to the school context. A good quality of relationship, according to attachment theorists, is characterized by closeness, affection, and respect. In this direction, the teacher can offer a relational context that can support the child in their learning processes and psychological development, preventing negative outcomes. The research focused on defining the salient features of this educational relationship and refining tools that could collect the perceptions of students and teachers, trying to identify the possible outcomes associated and the mechanisms involved.
