Book Advanced Triaxial Testing of Soil and Rock

Download or read book Advanced Triaxial Testing of Soil and Rock written by Robert T. Donaghe and published by ASTM International. This book was released on 1988 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although the triaxial compression test is presently the most widely used procedure for determining strength and stress-deformation properties of soils, there have been no books published on triaxial testing since the 1962 second edition of the landmark work The Measurement of Soil Properties in the Triaxial Test by Bishop and Henkel. It is apparent there is a need to document advances made in triaxial testing since publication of Bishop and Henkel's book and to examine the current state of the art in a forum devoted solely to triaxial testing. Because of increasing versatility brought about by recent developments in testing techniques and equipment, it is also important that the geotechnical profession be provided with an up-to-date awareness of potential uses for the triaxial test."--Overview.

Book Undrained Shear Behavior of a Marine Clay

Download or read book Undrained Shear Behavior of a Marine Clay written by DC. Koutsoftas and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive series of undrained shear tests were performed on a lean sensitive marine clay in both the normally consolidated and overconsolidated state. The types of tests performed included triaxial compression and extension and direct simple shear tests on K0-consolidated specimens. It was found that the clay is highly anisotropic with respect to its undrained shear strength and its stress-strain characteristics. Undrained shear strengths from compression tests were 1.7 to 1.8 times greater than from extension tests. Undrained strengths from direct simple shear tests were somewhat higher than the strengths from extension tests. Similar anisotropic behavior was also observed for undrained moduli. Failure strains were found to be influenced by the stress system during consolidation and the mode of shear. K0-consolidated specimens sheared in compression failed at extremely low strains and showed significant strain softening. The importance of these observations as they may relate to problems of undrained stability is discussed.

Book Engineering Plasticity

Download or read book Engineering Plasticity written by C. R. Calladine and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering Plasticity focuses on certain features of the theory of plasticity that are particularly appropriate to engineering design. Topics covered range from specification of an ideal plastic material to the behavior of structures made of idealized elastic-plastic material, theorems of plastic theory, and rotating discs. Torsion, indentation problems, and slip-line fields are also discussed. This book consists of 12 chapters and begins by providing an engineering background for the theory of plasticity, with emphasis on the use of metals in structural engineering and the nature of physical theories. The reader is then introduced to the general problem of how to set up a model of the plastic behavior of metal for use in analysis and design of structures and forming processes, paying particular attention to the plastic deformation that occurs when a specimen of metal is stressed. Subsequent chapters explore the behavior of a simple structure made of elastic-plastic material; theorems of plastic theory; rotating discs; and indentation problems. Torsion, slip-line fields, and circular plates under transverse loading are also considered, along with wire-drawing and extrusion and the effects of changes in geometry on structure. This monograph is intended for students of engineering.
