Book excerpt: Over the past 30 years or so, research effort in behaviour and ecology has progressed from simple documentation of the habits or habitats of differ ent species to asking more searching questions about the adaptiveness of the patterns of behaviour observed; moved from documenting simply what occurs, to trying to understand why. Increasingly, studies of behav iour or ecology explore the function of particular responses or patterns of behaviour in individuals or populations - looking for the adaptiveness that has led to the adoption of such patterns either at a proximate level (what environmental circumstances have favoured the adoption of some particular strategy or response from within the animal's repertoire at that specific time) or at an evolutionary level (speculating upon what pres sures have led to the inclusion of a particular pattern of behaviour within the repertoire in the first place). Many common principles have been established - common to a wide diversity of animal groups, yet showing some precise relationship between a given aspect of behaviour or population dynamics and some particular ecological factor. In particular, tremendous advances have been made in understanding the foraging behaviour of animals - and the 'decision rules' by which they seek and select from the various resources on offer - and patterns of social organization and behaviour: the adap tiveness of different social structures, group sizes or reproductive tactics.

While this had many positive aspects, there were also a few drawbacks. The main one of these is the fact that Voi is not exactly at the hub of scientific activity, even if we restrict ourselves to African ungulates. Thus, whereas I had felt initially that I was sufficiently familiar with ethological work on these animals to write a useful review, it soon became woefully evident that this assumption was erroneous. Over the last few years studies on African ungulates have pro liferated and results are being published in journals almost all over the world. My location in East Africa was sometimes less than ideal with respect to access to the most recent literature, and I depended to a considerable extent on the goodwill of colleagues in giving or lending me relevant papers. I am happy to report that I received a great deal of support and cooperation in this respect. Nevertheless, I may have over looked some important papers inadvertently; their authors should not feel slighted by such omissions, which only reflect availability of literature to me. Readers may also notice a considerable geographical bias in favor of East Africa, at the expense of other African regions, particularly South Africa.

Book excerpt: This study was conducted on Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in the eastern Kalahari region of South Africa. The long-term sustainability of the valued African or Cape buffalo Syncerus caffer caffer was investigated in an area that falls outside their permanent historical distribution. The habitat utilisation of the buffalo population and their range use patterns were investigated. Seasonal differences were apparent in habitat utilisation and were guided by nutritional needs and climatic variables. Range use patterns revealed an increase in range size during the cold, dry season. The buffalo density on Tswalu was the lowest recorded in the literature to date with 0.15 buffalo/km?. The animals showed seasonal changes in their feeding preferences with occasional browsing. During the cold, dry season the population was under severe nutritional stress. Population growth during the study period was 11.8% but this was within the norm expected for a free-living buffalo population. Annual recruitment for the study period was 33%, with half of the female population with calves at heel. However, the population is ageing with 54.2% of the population in the adult age class. Optimising the sex ratio and age structure could improve the productivity. Together with this, the nutritional needs of the buffalo should be met by supplementation, especially during periods of poor rainfall, to assist in optimal production and survival. Population viability analysis showed that the population is vulnerable over the medium term.
