Book The Beginning of Wisdom

Download or read book The Beginning of Wisdom written by Leon Kass and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-05-20 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imagine that you could really understand the Bible...that you could read, analyze, and discuss the book of Genesis not as a compositional mystery, a cultural relic, or a linguistic puzzle palace, or even as religious doctrine, but as a philosophical classic, precisely in the same way that a truth-seeking reader would study Plato or Nietzsche. Imagine that you could be led in your study by one of America's preeminent intellectuals and that he would help you to an understanding of the book that is deeper than you'd ever dreamed possible, that he would reveal line by line, verse by verse the incredible riches of this illuminating text -- one of the very few that actually deserve to be called seminal. Imagine that you could get, from Genesis, the beginning of wisdom. The Beginning of Wisdom is a hugely learned book that, like Genesis itself, falls naturally into two sections. The first shows how the universal history described in the first eleven chapters of Genesis, from creation to the tower of Babel, conveys, in the words of Leon Kass, "a coherent anthropology" -- a general teaching about human nature -- that "rivals anything produced by the great philosophers." Serving also as a mirror for the reader's self-discovery, these stories offer profound insights into the problematic character of human reason, speech, freedom, sexual desire, the love of the beautiful, pride, shame, anger, guilt, and death. Something as seemingly innocuous as the monotonous recounting of the ten generations from Adam to Noah yields a powerful lesson in the way in which humanity encounters its own mortality. In the story of the tower of Babel are deep understandings of the ambiguous power of speech, reason, and the arts; the hazards of unity and aloneness; the meaning of the city and its quest for self-sufficiency; and man's desire for fame, immortality, and apotheosis -- and the disasters these necessarily cause. Against this background of human failure, Part Two of The Beginning of Wisdom explores the struggles to launch a new human way, informed by the special Abrahamic covenant with the divine, that might address the problems and avoid the disasters of humankind's natural propensities. Close, eloquent, and brilliant readings of the lives and educations of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Jacob's sons reveal eternal wisdom about marriage, parenting, brotherhood, education, justice, political and moral leadership, and of course the ultimate question: How to live a good life? Connecting the two "parts" is the book's overarching philosophical and pedagogical structure: how understanding the dangers and accepting the limits of human powers can open the door to a superior way of life, not only for a solitary man of virtue but for an entire community -- a life devoted to righteousness and holiness. This extraordinary book finally shows Genesis as a coherent whole, beginning with the creation of the natural world and ending with the creation of a nation that hearkens to the awe-inspiring summons to godliness. A unique and ambitious commentary, a remarkably readable literary exegesis and philosophical companion, The Beginning of Wisdom is one of the most important books in decades on perhaps the most important -- and surely the most frequently read -- book of all time.

Book The Wisdom of the World in Proverbs of All Nations Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Wisdom of the World in Proverbs of All Nations Classic Reprint written by William J. Shearer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom of the World, in Proverbs of All Nations The Wisdom of the World, the golden fruit of knowledge and experience. Twenty years ago the writer began collecting these proverbs. From many thousands of those of all nations and all times, those which contain the statement of a truth have been carefully selected. Many thousands have purposely been omitted be cause they contained but half a truth or were not such as should be offered to the refined reader. Under this class came thousands of Spanish, French, German and Italian proverbs. To make them more readable they have been grouped under more than six hundred topics, which were then arranged alphabetically so that it might be easy to refer to any subject. The effort to give the authorities was abandoned, for the reason that it seemed impossible to do so with any degree of accuracy. Nearly all are credited to several persons or nations. Many sup posed to be original with modern writers can be traced back to the time of Aristotle or earlier. Since the authorities could not be given, the writer has not hesitated to change a great many, that they might the better suit the present time and system of morality. Book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus

Download or read book The Beginning and End of Wisdom Foreword by Sidney Greidanus written by Douglas Sean O'Donnell and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom literature of the Old Testament can be daunting. Sidney Greidanus, in the book's foreword, describes Old Testament wisdom literature as "one of the more difficult genres to interpret and preach." Yet the numerous proverbs and sayings meet us in everyday life, teaching us much about understanding and applying the gospel. Pastor Douglas O'Donnell writes, "Just as every book of the Old Testament adds light to our understanding of Jesus, so the revelation of God in the person of Christ enlightens our understanding of the Old Testament." Not only do the wisdom books teach us about Jesus Christ, but we understand the books better in light of the revelation of God's Son. O'Donnell opens up the genre of wisdom literature through six chapters that look at how the gospel shines through Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Job. He specifically centers on the first and last chapters of each book, noting how the texts illustrate "the wisdom of God in the sufferings of our Savior." Pastors, church leaders, and students of Scripture will find this thoughtful volume demonstrative of seeing the gospel in the Wisdom Literature.

Book Wit and Wisdom of Epictetus Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wit and Wisdom of Epictetus Classic Reprint written by Epictetus Epictetus and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit and Wisdom of Epictetus For we come into the world having by nature no idea of a right-angled triangle or of a quarter-tone, or of a semi-tone, but by a certain tradition of art we learn each of these things. And thus those who know them not, do not suppose that they know them. But good and evil, and nobleness and baseness, and the seemly and the unseemly, and happi ness and misfortune, and what is our concern and what is not, and what ought to be done and what not - who has come into the world without an im planted notion of these things Thus we all use these terms, and endeavour to fit our natural conceptions to every several thing. Behold, the beginning of philosophy is the observation of how men contradict one another, and the search whence comes this contradiction, and the censure and mistrust of bare opinion. And it is an inquiry into that which seems, whether it rightly seems; and the discovery of a certain rule, even as we have found a balance for weights and a plumb linefor straight and crooked. This is the beginning of philosophy. Are all things right to all to whom they seem so? But how can contradictory things be right? Book Wisdom Or Mind Will and Understanding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wisdom Or Mind Will and Understanding Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wisdom, or Mind, Will and Understanding Turning to this facsimile reprint, it will be seen that in the Macro original the margins of the manuscript are sometimes cut away or that the script is occasionally erased. Especially is this the case on leaves 98, 102 (recto and verso), 105, 106, s°c. It so happens, however, that Wisdom exists, as far as the first four lines of leaf 113 verso, or rather more than half the play, in a Digby manu script at the Bodleian Library. This furnished Dr. Furnivall with many supplies and variorum (generally improved) readings when he was editing the piece for The Early English d104 Society in 1904. On examination, however, it is evident that the original manuscript has in the interval become less distinct in places, inasmuch as words and letters which were then (i assume) legible are now either blurred or are altogether obliterated. Students must, therefore, on no account neglect the textual notes supplied by Dr. F urnivall 's version when dealing critically with this facsimile of the original Macro ms., which as far as craftsmanship and care permit is a faithful reproduction of the original in its present state. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reshit Chochmah, one of the classics of East European and Sephardic Jewry, has appeared in numerous editions. A combination of spiritual and moral advice in a deeply kabbalistic framework, it provides an irresistible model of personal redemption that is integral to the process of cosmic redemption. By improving oneself, one redeems the world. The popularity of Rabbi Eliyahu de Vidas's work has continued into modern times, and it was one of the first Hebrew books reprinted after the Holocaust. The current translation from the original Hebrew of one of its most significant parts, The Gate of Love, now appears together with an extended introduction. This introduction defines vital kabbalistic terms and concepts, and sets the entire work within its kabbalistic context. With these aids, this classic of Jewish spiritual guidance will be accessible to the modern reader who might otherwise find Rabbi de Vidas's exposition very difficult to follow.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks With Boys and Girls, or Wisdom Better Than Gold These addresses have all been delivered to large congrega tions of young people between the ages of ten and eighteen years. One who has not tried it can hardly understand how difficult it is to say things which shall interest alike minds so near the beginning and the end of school-life. The sim ple stories which arrest and keep the attention of young children are unsuited to those on the verge of maturity, and didactic statements, however logical in arrangement and clear in expression, addressed to the more cultivated, go quite over the heads of the others.
