Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of the Early Life and Development of Minnesota When I told him that I would like a position to teach mathe maties, it struck him more than favorably, as he said that that was his line of work, and that it did not give him any time to run the university and he wanted some one to handle the classes. We went around with his horse and buggy among the members Of the Board, and I found that the general scare which everywhere existed made them hesitate about making any arrangements for the future running of the school, not knowing whether or not it would ever open again. The presi dent, whose name I have forgotten, said that when school would open again, which he hoped would be in the fall, he felt quite certain that I would be offered a position as assistant teacher in mathematics. A majority of the board were really in favor of engaging me, and the other members were not op posed, excepting only their apprehension as to future pros peets of the university in such calamitous times. This came to pass in the fall, when I was on the government surveys in the northern part of Minnesota and could not accept. If this open ing had occurred or had been decided upon before I came to this state, it would without doubt have changed the course of my whole life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Minnesota and Its People: And Early History of Minneapolis On returning from Mexico to my Wisconsin home in 1848, with impaired health, I thought of returning to a claim I made in Texas in 184 G.During a military march in the fall of 1846 from Matamoras to a point on the plains some forty miles east of that city into Texas, the command lost its bearings on the prairie, through the carelessness of the guide, and in seeking water and a place to camp, after a march of two days, on the second night a light was seen in the distance which evidently indicated the presence of either a settlement of whites or a Comanche camp. The latter would not be a desirable event, but after so long a march over an unbroken wilderness it was decided best to approach the signs of habitation. About midnight the place was reached and it was found that three men had taken claims on the banks of a small stream which drained that part of Texas, where both mesquite trees and grass were abundant. The owners of these claims were from New Orleans where, as clerks, they had saved considerable money. They had concluded to unite their earnings and become planters in southwestern Texas. They purchased a few negroes and mules, supplied themselves with provisions and agricultural implements, and wandered through the wilds of Texas in search of land suitable for planting, and located in what they thought the most desirable place. Upon a hasty examination of the neighborhood the next morning, I decided to take an adjoining claim, and employed them to make improvements on it for me, with a full intention of making it a permanent home after the war. Download or read book Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota Classic Reprint written by Henry Hastings Sibley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the Early Days of Minnesota The presence of faribault being required at his trading post on the Cannon river, he departed in company with two young Indians, leaving me alone with the two hired men. I made it a practice to hunt with the Indians every day, except on Sunday, when I remained in my lodge. The Dakota mode of hunting deer is to form an extended line with intervals of eighty or a hundred yards between the hunters, and then ad vance at a rapid pace, completely scouring the country on their way. Any one falling in the rear has but a poor Chance for success. When an animal is killed, the carcass remains on the spot until the return of the owner, after the conclusion of the day's hunt. The skin is then taken off, and with a portion of the hind quarters, is the property of the man who shot the deer or elk, and the remainder is equitably divided among such as have been less successful, or to the widows and orphan children in the camp. The rule is, that while there is any food on hand, it must be distributed to all alike. There was a great abundance of game in the country where we were encamped, so that from twenty to thirty deer were an average day's hunt besides the elk, bear, and other animals killed with fire arms, and beaver and otter taken with traps by the men who were past the age when they could endure the exhausting exercise of deer hunting. I left the camp at an early hour one day to still hunt in a direction different from that to be taken by the Indians. I was successful, and returned to my lodge bearing upon my shoulders the greater part of a young buck. I soon ascertained that there was quite a commotion in the camp. One of the women came to inform me that all the men except five old fellows, who could not travel, had gone down to the forks of the Red Cedar, more262 minnesota historical collections.
