It is a remarkable fact that many of the religious errors of today, as well as of the past, are due in great part to false philosophical principles. This fact emphasizes the importance of the considerations herewith presented, wherein the rational grounds of religion are established. True religion presupposes sound philosophy: revealed religion is built on the foundation of natural religion: the necessity of Catholicity, as Christianity in the concrete, rests on the necessity of religion in general. Book The Bedrock of Belief

Download or read book The Bedrock of Belief written by William Robison and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-18 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "It is a remarkable fact that many of the religious errors of today, as well as of the past, are due in great part to false philosophical principles. Here, as elsewhere, grace neither destroys nor neglects nature, but completes and perfects it. It is hoped that the reflections set forth in these discourses will be of use as an antidote to the poison of irreligion, which is often masked under the guise of pretentious erudition and deceives the unwary or the self-conceited by the glamor of a false science."This work is in essence an apologetics text designed to defend the Catholic Faith against modern errors. "It is of untold advantage in warfare to know the tactics of the enemy and the objective towards which his attacks are chiefly directed; for the defense is then surer and more effective than it would be in ignorance of the methods or the purpose of the foe. This is a fact trumpeted throughout the whole of the battle-scarred world: the same fact is true in the conflict waged for the safeguard of what is dearer to us than life itself, the blessed faith for which the loved Christ died. Different in different ages have been the onslaughts on truth by its ruthless enemies; manifold, the diverse onsets of "the gates of hell" against the Church the Master builded: but in these later years the hostile aggression has been against the very groundwork of faith through assaults upon the foundations of revealed religion."Let us consider this: "Let us look around us in the world. Let us dive into the depths of human thought and volition. What do we see? Everywhere we see beings that are capable of nonexistence, since as a matter of fact they do not always exist in unchanging perfection. The rocks are wearing away, as they have worn away for uncounted ages: the minerals are entering into new combinations and are taken up into higher forms of being. Animals begin to breathe and move, and then they die and corrupt. Man is born, lives his little life, and goes the way of all flesh and is put away from the eyes of men. Take the world of sense and physical science, and accept the latest of Modern theories about its formation and development; and the conclusion becomes but the stronger, that at least its mode of motion, bewildering in the smallest portion of matter, is dying down. If so, it must have had a beginning, or else long ago, nay, almost an eternity ago, it would have come to complete inertness."Let us close with a consideration of Heaven: "The heaven of nature would be a something more thrilling than we can quite realize. Never to know a pang of sorrow, never a pain or a doubt or a misgiving; never to experience the stab of separation from loved ones; never to fear the possibility of falling away from God through the weakness of a faltering will: and besides all this, to have the fulness of joys to satisfy every longing in the throbbing ecstasy of blessedness; always unto everlasting to hold God by the powers of mind and will,-truly even this is more than we can appreciate."

Book The Foundations of Faith Vol 37 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Faith Vol 37 Classic Reprint written by George Frederick Kingston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith, Vol. 37 Thus the history of the problem in modern times shows a great variety of views concerning the nature and'analy sis of belief. It also reveals the fact that some of the major problems of belief are not carefully differentiated. For example, the ground of belief, or that upon which the belief is established, or built up, is not clearly distinguished from the actual state or process of belief. Another aspect of the same problem is what we may call the logic as Opposed to the psychology of belief. The validity of a belief is one consideration as it is judged by certain standards of truth, but the psychologist is not concerned with this. His interest is iii-analysing thestate or process into its elements. The more recent social psychologists have pointed out the importance of social influence in the making and establishing of belief, and this is a timely emphasis, as it seems to have been over looked by many writers. Moreover, the wide range of the meanings of belief has never been adequately set forth. Belief, Credulity, Confidence and Faith are terms frequently found in literature, and yet a differentiation of the use of these terms in the wide range of the subject is lacking. It seems necessary, there fore, to set to work on a classification of belief, both as to Grounds and Processes, in order to show the wide range of the subject, to attempt to clear up some of the difficulties in the use of terms, and to make distinctions which seemed to be lacking in many treatises on the subject. My thanks are due particularly to Professor G. S. Brett. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Foundations of Religion Classic Reprint written by Stanley A. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Religion We cannot properly understand things (men, events, beliefs, practices) unless we view them in their context, in the whole of which they are part, in the light of the preceding and following stages. The ape and the man are remarkably alike - or unlike - it depends upon the particular group of details (resemblances or differences) and the only critical estimate will be based upon both groups of evidence, and will refer the ape and the man to their environments and to their place in evolution. So, too, a religion (e.g. Christianity) may have remark able resemblances with other religions whether (1) now current, or (2) historically prior to it but it would be unwise to base an estimate upon those features alone or upon the differences alone. And if we proceed on these principles we must apply the same method to ourselves what we condemn in others may be virtually identical with something in ourselves, and what we think meritorious in our friends may be found in our foes. The fundamental resemblances will be obscured because of the fundamental differences, or vice versa. And if we pursue this further and compare men who are warmly enthusiastic and keenly zealous, we should find most interesting points of resemblance, so that the fiery religionist and the violent rationalist would have certain fundamental psychical similarities although their bodies of beliefs and practices might differ fundamentally. 0f. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Faith: Being a Consideration of the Grounds of Religious Belief, and Especially of the Evidences of Divine Revelation in the Religion of the Bible One who ascends a mountain sees the landscape below changing on his view from every new point of observation. The general features of forest and field, river and plain, are much the same, but the outlines of the picture are changed. The horizon falls further away; new mountains show their misty tops, and new realms come faintly into View. Meantime objects near at hand appear to change in, relative importance; some that were conspicuous sink out of sight, and others, which they for a time concealed, stand out in bold pro file. Increasing knowledge furnishes to each succeeding generation a new view point from which to contem plate religion, natural or revealed. In this change of view we still recognize the old staple supports of faith - arguments which will forever stand firm from age to age; but new truths also come into view, and the old arguments give new suggestions. They change in their relative value when viewed through a changed perspective. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Faith Any volumes have been written M upon the subject of these lectures, and it would be a very pleasant task and by no means a difficult one to gather to gether and sum up Opinions old and new upon their main thesis, the relation between faith and authority. The present volume, however, does not offer this to its readers. It brings with it a few old problems under whatever new light may come from the experience of a long ministry. For thirty years the writer has been watching the play of religious truth upon the minds of men, and his reading of theological results has been revised in the light of innumer able experiences. In this way he trusts that he may be able to present formal questions at least from some new angles of vision and in some new groupings. If they didn't care, they might go on repeating with thought less lips old platitudes, without ever wondering whether the new learning was going to fit them.
