Book The Story of Astrology

Download or read book The Story of Astrology written by Manly P. Hall and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The actual beginnings of astrology are unknown and unknowable. The science emerges already highly refined from the utter obscurity of the pre-historic world. The ends of astrology are also unknown. There is already evidence that the perfection of this science will elevate man to an intellectual and social condition far beyond the limitations of our present consciousness. -from "Astrology's Place in the Modern World" In this concise book, one of the preeminent metaphysicists of the 20th century gives us an extraordinarily informative and entertaining survey of the astrological disciplines and beliefs of the ancient Chinese, Tibetans, HIndus, Greeks, Romans, Aztecs, and Arabians. Then, his discussions of astrology as science, religion, and philosophy bring this paranormal system into the contemporary world, and he explains how, in his estimation, that the heavenly bodies, acting as the "foci of intellectual energy," dramatically sway the course of civilization itself. A classic of supernatural spirituality is a must-read for those fascinated by the influence of paranormal belief in the 20th century. American mystic MANLY PALMER HALL (1901-1990) founded the Philosophical Research Society in 1934. He is also the author of The Lost Keys of Freemasonry, The Ways of the Lonely Ones, and The Secret Teachings of All Ages.

Book Postcolonial Astrology

Download or read book Postcolonial Astrology written by Alice Sparkly Kat and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2021-05-18 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tapping into the political power of magic and astrology for social, community, and personal transformation. In a cross-cultural approach to understanding astrology as a magical language, Alice Sparkly Kat unmasks the political power of astrology, showing how it can be channeled as a force for collective healing and liberation. Too often, magic and astrology are divorced from their potency and cultural contexts: co-opted by neoliberalism, used as a force of oppression, or distilled beyond recognition into applications that belie their individual and collective power. By looking at the symbolic and etymological histories of the sun, moon, Saturn, Venus, Mercury, Mars, and Jupiter, we can trace and understand the politics of magic--and challenge our own practices, interrogate our truths, and reshape our institutions to build better frameworks for communities of care. Fearless, radical, and fresh, Sparkly Kat's Postcolonial Astrology ushers in a new wave of astrology revival, refusing to apologize for its magickism and connecting its power to the spirituality and politics we need now. Intersectional, inclusive, and geared towards queer and POC communities, it uses our historical and collective constructs of the planets, sun, and moon to re-chart our subconscious history, redefine the body in the world, and assert our politics of the personal, in astrology and all things.

Book Astrology

  • ISBN : 1615924477
  • Pages : 244 pages

Download or read book Astrology written by Roger B. Culver and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 1988-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary astrologers claim that their craft is scientifically based and rationally consistent, and above all, that "astrology works" - a belief shared by millions of Americans, including highly visible political and media personalities. As a result, the practice of consulting the stars for advice has never been more popular - or more dangerous. Professional astronomers Roger B. Culver and Philip A. Ianna have produced a highly readable and well-referenced response to the claims of astrologers. This book points out the glaring inconsistencies associated with the basic concepts of "modern" astrology - from the zodiac itself to the fabled "Age of Aquarius." Tracing humanity''s historical fascination with the heavens that produced the celestial "twins" of astronomy and astrology, the authors leave little doubt concerning the difference between astronomical science and astrological art form. Astrology: True or False offers a complete and extensive summary of available evidence on astrology''s basic definitions, concepts, and effectiveness. The authors'' research revealed thousands of predictions gone "bust" - from the start of World War III to claims about the existence of an "anti-Earth" orbiting on the other side of the sun. They studied the famous "twenty-year cycle" of presidential death and disaster, the "moon cycles" of crime and murder in major cities, and the incidences of major personality traits in certain sun signs. Their conclusions, while disappointing to the determined believer in astrology, are nevertheless refreshingly rational.

The 160 pages of this book are abundantly replete with exact references and footnotes to satisfy the scholars among you. The book is dripping with dramatic storytelling, filled with philosophy as clear and deep as a Himalayan lake, and precisely presents the perfectly useful astrological symbolism of the divine stars. * * "If there is anything Vedic and spiritual about Hindu astrology, then this is the book that can teach us about it. Vic leads us into the wonderful depths of Vedic wisdom by relating the myths connected with each of the 27 lunar mansions and their deities. Using this approach, this book goes considerably deeper than other Jyotish textbooks I have seen. Warmly recommended, even to non-astrologers! Can we hope for follow-up book about the Hindu planetary deities?" - Dieter Koch, Indologist and Archaeoastronomer Co-creator of the Swiss Ephemeris "Vic DiCara's exploration and definitive research on the lunar mansions brings the primordial zodiac alive with the rich symbolism and sacred stories of Indian lore. We often forget that the basis of Vedic astrology will always be the mystical mythology associated with Jyotish, the science of light. Mr. DiCara's brilliant text illuminates our path home to the divine through his deep understanding and the blessings of the gods and goddesses of ancient India" - Dennis M. Harness, Ph.D. Psychologist, Writer and Vedic Astrologer "27 Stars, 27 Gods is a fantastically deep book about the fixed stars of Vedic astrology. It is well written and well researched, and is a clear and enjoyable read! I highly recommend it for everyone from astrologers to yogis and everyone in between." - Juliana Swanson, RN ACVA Teacher, Jyotish Visharada & Kovid More than a journey through the outer universe of astrological stars, 27 Stars 27 Gods is a journey through the driving forces of the subconscious inner universe. By helping us identify these influences Vic DiCara helps us understand ourselves better and progress more smoothly on our life's journey. 27 Stars 27 Gods can be a reference book in the hands of an experienced astrologer, but it is also a self improvement tool for any reader interested in exploring life in depth. It presents symbols, mythology, ancient storytelling and divine lila in language that immediately catches one's interest and speaks to us like a friend - never prescriptive, but always revealing our opportunities. Let me congratulate Vic on this unique book. Unlike most books in the spiritual market, this is not at all a copy of a copy of a copy. It is an outstanding new addition to our knowledge, written with an inspired pen of intensity and wit. - Sripad Sacinandana Swami Vaishnava Guru & Sanyassi

Book Astrology Science and Culture

Download or read book Astrology Science and Culture written by Roy Willis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-19 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mainstream science has long dismissed astrology as a form of primitive superstition, despite or perhaps even because of its huge popular interest. From daily horoscopes to in-depth and personalized star forecasts, astrology, for many, plays a crucial role in the organization of everyday life. Present-day scholars and scientists remain baffled as to why this pseudo-science exercises such control over supposedly modern, rational and enlightened individuals, yet so far they have failed to produce any meaningful analysis of why it impacts on so many lives and what lies behind its popular appeal. Moving beyond scientific scepticism, Astrology, Science and Culture finally fills the gap by probing deeply into the meaning and importance of this extraordinary belief system. From the dawn of pre-history, humankind has had an intimate connection with the stars. With its roots in the Neolithic culture of Europe and the Middle East, astrology was traditionally heralded as a divinatory language. Willis and Curry argue that, contrary to contemporary understanding including that of most astrologers astrology was originally, and remains, a divinatory practice. Tackling its rich and controversial history, its problematic relationship to Jungian theory, and attempts to prove its grounding in objective reality, this book not only persuasively demonstrates that astrology is far more than a superstitious relic of years gone by, but that it enables a fundamental critique of the scientism of its opponents. Groundbreaking in its reconciliation of astrologys ancient traditions and its modern day usage, this book impressively unites philosophy, science, anthropology, and history, to produce a powerful exploration of astrology, past and present.

Book Integral Astrology

Download or read book Integral Astrology written by Armand M. Diaz and published by . This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new paradigm is emerging in Western civilization, led by transpersonal psychology, chaos and complexity theories, general evolution theory, and the human potential movement. Leading developmental researchers are extending psychology upwards, linking it with mystical states to embrace spirituality. Coordinating fields of information both new and old, integral theorists are creating a truly holistic approach to the many ways of knowing that are part of the human experience. Astrology should have its place among these disciplines: through the Dark Age when materialism reigned in Western culture astrology held aloft a light, reminding us that we do not live in a meaningless, mechanistic universe but within a meaningful, conscious cosmos. Yet for astrology to be fully recognized, astrologers need to have understanding about their field: where it has been, where it is, and where we might take it. In Integral Astrology, Armand M. Diaz, Ph.D., offers an exciting new way for astrologers to approach their ancient and diverse discipline. He emphasizes that there is not one astrology, but a number of astrologies, each of which expresses a particular place on the cultural landscape, an inner or outer orientation, and a stage of consciousness evolution. He shows how these diverse perspectives create a dynamic mosaic of astrological knowledge, and presents a model for a truly inclusive, integral astrology that honors both its traditions and innovations while also building bridges to other disciplines and ways of thinking.

Book excerpt: The story of the history of Western astrology begins with the philosophers of Greece in the 5th century BC. the Greeks added numerology, geometry and rational thought. In future centuries astrology shifted to Islam only to return to the West in medieval times where it flourished until the shift of ideas during the Renaissance.

Book Astrology How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope

Download or read book Astrology How to Make and Read Your Own Horoscope written by Sepharial and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the earliest ages of the world’s history the subject of Astrology has excited the interest of, and exercised a great influence over, the minds of a certain order of thinking men. The science has never been universal in its acceptance, though it is safe to say that, with its countless adherents in the East and the ever-increasing number of its advocates in the West, there is no faith which has a more universal application than the belief in the influence of the heavenly bodies over the destinies of human beings. It is not possible within the limits of a small handbook such as this to adequately consider the philosophic paradox which makes of Freewill in man a “necessity in play”; but it is obvious that the concept is not altogether unscientific, seeing that it is customary to speak of the “free path of vibration” in chemical atoms while at the same time it is known that these atoms have their restricted characteristics, modes of motion, &c., and are all subject to the general laws controlling the bodies of which they form integral parts. Let it suffice that if we can trace an actual connectedness between the disposition of the heavenly bodies at the moment of a birth and the known life and character of the individual then born, and an exact correspondence between the course of events in that life with the changes occurring in the heavens subsequent to the moment of birth, we shall do well to accept the fact for what it is worth, and arrange our philosophic notions accordingly. As far back as the year B.C. 2154, we find mention of the great importance attaching to the celestial phenomena in the minds of Chinese rulers. It is recorded in the Historical Classic of China that at that time the astrologers Hi and Ho neglected their duties so that when, on the 10th of October, there was a great eclipse of the Sun at Peking between seven and nine o’clock in the morning, the people were wholly unprepared for it, and “ran about here and there in the utmost consternation.” For this offence Hi and Ho were deprived of their offices, their estates were confiscated and they were driven from the kingdom. Among the Hindus we have the classical writers Garga, Parashara, and Mihira, together with their legions of commentators. The Assyrian records are full of astrological allusions regarding the influence of planetary conjunctions and stellar positions. The Greek mythology is nothing but a vast system of cosmographical astrology, and there is no other history in it than what you may read in the constellations of the heavens and the corresponding evolution of the human race. Aristotle made it a part of his philosophy. Hipparchus, Hippocrates, Thales, Galenius, and others subscribed an intelligent belief in its principles. To Claudius Ptolemy, however, we are indebted for the first concise and scientific statement of its principles and practice, so far as Europe is concerned. He wrote the Tetrabiblos, or Four Books, and laid the foundations of a true astrological science. Julius Firmicus confirmed Ptolemy and enlarged upon his observations. The subsequent discovery of the planets Uranus and Neptune by Herschel and Adams, widened the field of research and gave to later astrologers the clue to much that hitherto had been imperfectly understood. Not that these discoveries overturned the whole system of astrology, as some have imagined and foolishly stated, or that they negatived the conclusions drawn from the observed effects of the seven anciently known bodies of the solar system, but it became possible after a lapse of time to fill in the blank spaces and to account for certain events which had not been traced to the action of any of the already known planets.
