This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beam, or Technical Elements of Girder Construction The subject of the following pages is treated from the foundation, with the object of making it useful to the student who may possess but little previous acquaintance with the subject itself, or with mathematics, or the theory of mechanics. No complicated algebraic formulae have been found necessary for the determination of any of the questions which arise, either in respect to the amount of stresses or strains, or to the amounts necessary to provide for them. Oh 7the other hand such elementary formulae as are required for the ordinary routine of constructive work are fully explained. 0. Book Continuous Revolving Drawbridges

Download or read book Continuous Revolving Drawbridges written by Clemens Herschel and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuous, Revolving Drawbridges: The Principles of Their Construction and the Calculation of the Strains in Them; With More Especial Reference to the Designing of Continuous Panel Girders of This Description This little book, in its original shape, was a paper written for the American Society of Civil Engineers, and was prompted by the author's design of the Quinnipiac Bridge, at New Haven, Conn., and by his employment in testing a design for the Eastern Avenue bridge, in Boston, Mass. It has been thought that in its present shape it may be of some use to students in engineering construction; to experts also, on the subject of continuous girders, at home and abroad, so much of the work as relates to subjects, that, it is believed, are here for the first time treated, it may not be without interest. In this connection, the author will refer only to his method of first calculating continuous girders for given reactions, and then weighing off these same reactions to act under the girders in setting them up on their supports; to those parts of the book that treat of the extension of this idea to the calculation of continuous girders, by first dividing up the total load into parts that make certain reactions = 0, and those that act on the girder as though it were continuous over all its supports; and to the cases in which two supports are themselves carried and pivoted upon a third support. Book The Construction of Wrought Iron Bridges

Download or read book The Construction of Wrought Iron Bridges written by John Herbert Latham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Construction of Wrought Iron Bridges: Embracing the Practical Application of the Principles of Mechanics to Wrought Iron Girder Work As this work is analytical throughout, I would begin by say ing a few words upon Analysis. Analysis (separation) applied to any subject, always indi cates a distinct classification of what we know of the subject, in such a way as to make that knowledge effective and useful. The usefulness of unarranged knowledge is very imperfect; a general impression can be formed from it, but no argument: for argument implies some arrange ment. Our first knowledge, whether practical or scientific, is necessarily obtained from experience of some kind: if that experience be first separated into distinct and clas sified facts, and then good reasoning be brought to bear upon those facts, our primary knowledge is improved, and becomes perfected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beams and Girders: Practical Formulas for Their Resistance The main object of this treatise is to deduce general formulas for the resist ance of beams and girders applicable to all cases, and to set forth truly practi cal formulas, so far as seemingly re quired. In the use of existing forms and sections. These formulas are shorter and simpler than the corresponding ones in general use, and are, besides, practi cally perfectly accurate, which is by no means the case, as we have abundantly shown, with the common formulas.
