Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beacon Second Reader In the "Beacon Second Reader" the author has chosen for his stories only those of recognized literary merit; and while it has been necessary to rearrange and sometimes rewrite them for the purpose of simplification, yet he has endeavored to retain the spirit which has served to endear these ancient tales to the children of all ages. The fairy story appeals particularly to children who are in the second school year. It has been proved by our ablest psychologists that at about this period of development, children are especially susceptible to the stimulus of the old folklore. They are in fact passing through the stage which corresponds to the dawn of the human race, when demons, dragons, fairies, and hobgoblins were as firmly believed in as rivers and mountains. As a test of this theory the author asked hundreds of second-grade and third-grade school children to recall the stories which they had read during the preceding year, and to express their preferences. The choice of more than ninety percent proved to be either folklore stories, pure and simple, or such tales as contained the folklore element. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beacon Third Reader The author has endeavored in this series to present some well-beloved stories as they have been handed down through generations of story-telling people for the delight of their little ones. That these stories have been told again and again is no disadvantage, but is one of their chief charms. Indeed, the fact that they have been retold is proof that they were worth telling in the first place. Children at this age are naturally dramatic. They yearn for tales that possess some plot or clever turning point. They are not satisfied with, and even turn in disgust from, stories of the strictly narrative or "informational" kind. They crave stirring scenes with animated conversations, while the stories in which animals possess the attributes of man particularly appeal to them, possibly because of man's close association with animals during the ages of his development. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS The Beacon Second Reader This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: The Beacon Second Reader is a collection of classical fairy tales arranged by James H. Fassett. Excerpt: "There was once an old goat who had seven little kids. She loved them all as much as any mother ever loved her children. One day the old goat wished to go into the woods to get food for her kids. Before she started she called them all to her and said: "Dear children, I am going into the woods. Now do not open the door while I am away. If the old wolf should get into our hut, he would eat you all up, and not a hair would be left. You can easily tell him by his rough voice and his black feet." "Dear mother," cried all the young kids, "we will be very careful not to let the old wolf in. You need not think of us at all, for we shall be quite safe." So the old goat went on her way into the dark woods. She had not been gone long when there came a loud rap at the door, and a voice cried: "Open the door, my dear children. I have something here for each of you." But the young kids knew by the rough voice that this was the old wolf."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American School Readers: Third Reader The subject matter has four chief elements: folklore and fairy story, historical stories, nature stories, and poems. The folklore and fairy stories are full of interest to children; they have humor and are decidedly ethical. The offensive stories of wicked relatives are omitted, as being immoral in their tendency. In their place are tales of enterprise and of common life which have become classics, and which tend to elevate the minds and characters of children. Historical stories are valuable at this age, because, while children are interested in fairy tales, they are also interested in real people, and this interest should be fostered in the school readers; so we have stories of Washington, of Lincoln, of Charlemagne, and of other historical characters, all by standard authors. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Children's Second Reader IF Heaven lies about us in our infancy the realm of poetry cannot be far distant. It is a significant, as well as a beautiful fact, that our poets have been so noble and true that we are glad to have the children learn of them. They have manifested, too, such a love of innocence and childhood in their home lives, that the little ones who never have had the privilege of looking into their faces may yet understand this beautiful relationship, and so, being drawn closer to their lives, appreciate and love their poems. In introducing the poets Longfellow and Whittier into the following pages the author has not undertaken any comprehensive account of their lives; but the purpose has been to picture them to the children in such a way as to make them real personages, and also to lead up to such of their poems as appeal to the little ones. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eaton Readers: Second Reader The Second of the Eaton Readers is designed to furnish the child with reading matter adapted to the different seasons of the year and the holidays. A marked feature is the number of lessons referring to Special Days. The great festivals of the year, the days set apart for the promotion of patriotism and the birthdays of our country's most noted men are emphasized by stories, descriptions and poems. Stories, both old and new, furnish variety and awaken interest. The pleasures and experiences of the four children with whom the little readers of the First Reader have become acquainted appeal to the universal interest in a continued narrative. These stories of happy child life suggest amusements and games for the home and present in a natural manner the ethical ideas of kindness and unselfish giving. This book, like the first book of the same series, is written in accordance with the belief that a child's reading should increase his observation and love of nature as well as awaken a love for books. Both directly and indirectly many of the lessons supplement nature study and suggest appropriate language exercises. To the authors and publishers who have kindly granted the use of their beautiful selections, most grateful acknowledgments are rendered. To be sure, children like other stories, but they respond at once with sparkling eyes and animated voices when the fairy tale is suggested. How unwise, therefore, it is to neglect this powerful stimulus which lies ready at our hands! Even a pupil who is naturally slow will wade painfully and laboriously through a fairy story, while he would throw down in disgust an account of the sprouting of the bean or the mining of coal.It can hardly be questioned, moreover, that the real culture which the child derives from these literary classics is far greater than that which he would gain from the "information" stories so common in the average second and third readers.

But then, there was the Spaniard, too! Hot-headed, he was, passionate and lawless as a Tartar. Needless to say the story takes some startling turns. The end is surprising. And the satisfying conclusion it all comes to is this, that the eternal feminine still responds to courage in the male.

Download or read book The Beacon First Reader color Edition Yesterday s Classics written by James H. Fassett and published by . This book was released on 2022-05-10 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Beacon First Reader" differs from other first readers in that all the material has been carefully arranged with reference to its phonetic difficulties. In selecting material the plan has been to present only stories that have stood the test of time, stories which the child delights to hear repeated again and again. Since our language is so richly endowed with these masterpieces, it seems absurd to give to children made-up stories which are in no sense comparable, as examples of literature, to the old folklore. The interest with which the child reads the classic tales he loves proves a most effective stimulus to his reading power. He does not need to be urged to master them, sentence by sentence, but seizes upon them with avidity. The power which this element of interest lends cannot be emphasized too strongly.
