Book The Battles of Dunbar Prestonpans

Download or read book The Battles of Dunbar Prestonpans written by James Lumsden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battles of Dunbar Prestonpans: And Other Selected Poems (New and Old) This publication might be described as the poetic portion of my last work - "Sheep-Head and Trotters" - with many omissions and additions: and it is issued simply because all the former editions are now out of print. With the exception of the new poems, all the others are selected from what now only remains of the whole poetical produce of my life, for I foolishly destroyed the great bulk of it before finally leaving the farm, in a moment of chagrin, worry, and with a feeling akin to despair. The selected pieces - with some others - were saved through having in the course of time been pasted to the leaves of a large private scrap book, and I am quite willing to leave them, with my later offspring, in the hands of all candid readers or critics, stipulating only that they do read the book before pronouncing judgment upon it The contents of the work have all been carefully revised and are now presented in the best style and guise that I can give them. As I said in my first preface, "I am well aware that the cordial reception most of the pieces met with on their debut in their native locality may not prove to have been an earnest of their ultimate success in the world at large. Book On Gladsmuir Shall the Battle Be

Download or read book On Gladsmuir Shall the Battle Be written by Arran Johnston and published by Helion. This book was released on 2024-08-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1745, a charismatic (but inexperienced) young Prince sailed to Scotland - determined to wrest the crowns of Great Britain from the head of George II. In a few short weeks, he raised an army large enough to challenge the government's forces in Scotland and, against the odds, stormed to a shocking victory over them at the Battle of Prestonpans. Celebrated ever since in song and art, Prestonpans nevertheless proved to be a false dawn on the road to defeat at the Battle of Culloden seven months later, but without his victory at Prestonpans and all the opportunities it provided, Charles Edward Stuart ('Bonnie Prince Charlie') could never have invaded England and his short uprising would then have been but a footnote in the history of Georgian Britain. This book - the climax of years of on-site investigation and source analysis - pieces together the events of the Prestonpans campaign in unprecedented detail. Focusing on the week of the battle, the author's knowledge of the towns and villages through which the armies marched brings their motions vividly to life. Combined with eyewitness testimonies and close scrutiny of the evidence presented to the Board of Inquiry in 1746, this allows the reader to understand the build-up to the battle from an individual, as well as strategic, level. Such an understanding is revealed as critical, as the effects of morale, landscape and personality are shown to have determined the fate of the battle far more than the relative power of broadsword and bayonet. The book opens with an exploration of the battlefield area prior to the Rising, before analysing the political and military strengths and weaknesses of the opposing causes; this includes rarely-provided information on the career of Sir John Cope. After following the opening campaign in the Highlands, the reader is then taken on a detailed day-by-day journey through the week leading to the battle. The account of the engagement itself - driven by eyewitness testimony and contemporary evidence - also incorporates the latest archaeological analysis of the site to create the most detailed and engaging presentation yet of this famous and dramatic event. Its aftermath and legacy, both on a local and national level, is then considered before the book concludes with a look at the changes which have occurred across the battlefield landscape up to the present day. This is a study of one of Britain's best-documented, but least analysed, battles - seen from within the landscape and communities around which it was fought. No longer should the two days of events which make up the Battle of Prestonpans be viewed simply as the prologue to a future defeat; instead, they are presented as they were understood at the time: as the climax of a month-long campaign which, it seemed, would determine the fate of Scotland.

Book Battles of the Scottish Lowlands

Download or read book Battles of the Scottish Lowlands written by Stuart Reid and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2004-09-19 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historical guide retells, in graphic detail, the story of nine of the most important battles to be fought in Scotland south of the Highland Line, stretching from Aberdeen to the Firth of Clyde. The battles range from medieval period to the time of Jacobite Rebellion. They show how weapons andequipment, tactics and strategy, and the make up of the armies themselves changed over the course of almost 500 years. By concentrating on these nine battles Stuart Reid provides a concise, coherent account of Scottish military history, and he presents detailed reassessments of each battle in the light of the very latest research. His book is fascinating introduction to Scottish military history and an essential guide for readers who are keen to explore these battle sites for themselves.Three of the battles belong to the medieval period and Scotland's fight to establish and maintain its independence from England—Wallace's victory at Stirling Bridge in 1296, Bruce's even greater victory at Bannockburn in 1314 and then, at the end of the period, the crushing defeat at Pinkie in1547. Three more battles belong to the bloody civil wars of the seventeenth century—Montrose's great victory at Kilsyth in August 1645, Cromwell's triumph at the Battle of Dunbar in 1650 and the short, bloody action at Inverkeithing that followed. Finally for the Jacobite period the trilogy covers Sherriffmuir 1715, Prestonpans 1745 and the conclusive encounter at Falkirk 1746.By skillful use of maps, diagrams and photographs the author explains the complex, sometimes puzzling sequence of events that make these encounters so fascinating. He provides a detailed tour of each battleground as it appears to the visitor in the present day and rediscovers the lanes and by-ways tramped by soldiers hundreds of years ago.

Book Lost East Lothian

Download or read book Lost East Lothian written by Craig Statham and published by . This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: East Lothian, a unitary authority area including the old county of Haddingtonshire, is one of Scotland's most historic places - John Knox was born in Haddington in the early years of the sixteenth century; important links were forged with the Low Coutries as a result of trade; and because of its location between Edinburgh and the border with England, the area was razed frequently by English troops. Significant battles were fought within its boundaries, most notably at Dunbar in 1560 and Prestonpans in 1745. It is also a land of huge contrasts, with sandy beaches, majestic sea cliffs, rolling farmland and barren moor, geographical features which have heavily influenced the life and industry of its inhabitants over the centuries. In this beautifully illustrated book, featuring over 100 old photographs, maps and prints, Craig Statham explores an enormous range of lost buildings which have been central to all aspects of the history of the county over a period of thousands of years, but which now no longer exist, lie in ruins or are no longer used for their original function. Grouped by theme, the book includes all types of lost buildings, from castles, mansion houses, streets and even whole villages to hospitals, factories, churches, schools, hotels and even swimming pools.
