Book Cromwell s Crowning Mercy

Download or read book Cromwell s Crowning Mercy written by Malcolm Atkin and published by Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1998 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here for the first time is a vivid, fully illustrated account of this most dramatic of Civil War battles, described by Cromwell as a 'crowning mercy'. It represented the crowning achievement of Cromwell's military career, and was a mercy in bringing to an end (bar a few ineffective plots and uprisings) the fighting of the Civil War. Using original sources and quoting extensively from the accounts of those who took part, the author explains the role of the local gentry in the war and the attitudes of the ordinary people caught up in extraordinary events. For the first time, there is also extensive discussion of the fate of the thousands of Scottish prisoners who faced transportation to the New World or the fens of East Anglia. Extensive appendices reproduce contemporary documents, making the book a valuable resource for further study. As a local study and as a dissection of a key event in the English Civil War, Malcolm Atkin's authoritative accounts will be essential reading for all those interested in the period.

Charles dictated the account of his escape to Samuel Pepys years later and it is one of the finest primary sources of its kind. The Battle of Worcester Society is thrilled to be able to bring this work, once again, to the public domain. Along with supporting information and an introduction written by the society's President and former Chairman the text is presented in this book along with Pepys' notes.

Book The British Wars 1637 1651

Download or read book The British Wars 1637 1651 written by Peter Gaunt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-01-04 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1640s, the kingdoms ruled by Charles I - England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland - were gripped by a series of civil wars and conflicts which were, in part, distinct to each kingdom, but which also overlapped and inter-related, leading some British historians to portray them as a single 'British' conflict. The British Wars by Peter Gaunt offers a concise history of these wars, from the beginning of Charles I's travails with the Scots to the conclusion of the wars at the Battle of Worcester and the English conquest of Ireland and Scotland. Providing a clear, concise and balanced account of events in England and Wales, Scotland and Ireland, this book * explores the relationship between the three kingdoms *looks at military, political and religious developments in each * assesses whether the wars can be seen as a single 'British' conflict or should be viewed as a series of inter-related but essentially separate wars.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The English Civil War is a joy to behold, a thing of beauty... this will be the civil war atlas against which all others will judged and the battle maps in particular will quickly become the benchmark for all future civil war maps.' -- Professor Martyn Bennett, Department of History, Languages and Global Studies, Nottingham Trent University The English Civil Wars (1638–51) comprised the deadliest conflict ever fought on British soil, in which brother took up arms against brother, father fought against son, and towns, cities and villages fortified themselves in the cause of Royalists or Parliamentarians. Although much historical attention has focused on the events in England and the key battles of Edgehill, Marston Moor and Naseby, this was a conflict that engulfed the entirety of the Three Kingdoms and led to a trial and execution that profoundly shaped the British monarchy and Parliament. This beautifully presented atlas tells the whole story of Britain's revolutionary civil war, from the earliest skirmishes of the Bishops' Wars in 1639–40 through to 1651, when Charles II's defeat at Worcester crushed the Royalist cause, leading to a decade of Stuart exile. Each map is supported by a detailed text, providing a complete explanation of the complex and fluctuating conflict that ultimately meant that the Crown would always be answerable to Parliament.

Book excerpt: The English Civil War (1642–1651) was a series of conflicts and political struggles between Parliamentarians ("Roundheads") and Royalists ("Cavaliers") in England, with wider ramifications across Scotland and Ireland. The primary issues at stake were England's governance and matters of religious freedom.[2] The war consisted of three phases, with the first (1642–1646) and second (1648–1649) wars fought between supporters of King Charles I and the Long Parliament, while the third (1649–1651) saw battles between supporters of King Charles II and the Rump Parliament. The Scottish Covenanters and Irish Confederates also played significant roles. Ultimately, the Parliamentarians emerged victorious after the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651. The unique aspect of these civil wars was that they were not solely about determining who would rule, but also concerned the governance of the entire British Isles, including England, Scotland, and Ireland. The outcomes included the trial and execution of Charles I in 1649, the exile of his son Charles II in 1651, and the establishment of the Commonwealth of England under the personal rule of Oliver Cromwell from 1653 (as the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland) and briefly his son Richard (1658–1659). The Church of England's monopoly on worship was ended in England, and the victors in Ireland consolidated the Protestant Ascendancy. Additionally, the wars set the precedent that an English monarch cannot govern without Parliament's consent, a concept further enshrined with Parliamentary sovereignty during the Glorious Revolution in 1688.

Book excerpt: One late summer's day in 1642 two rival armies faced each other across the rolling Warwickshire countryside at Edgehill. There, Royalists faithful to King Charles I engaged in a battle with the supporters of the Parliament. Ahead lay even more desperate battles like Marston Moor and Naseby. The fighting was also to rage through Scotland and Ireland, notably at the siege of Drogheda and the decisive battle of Dunbar. Few periods in English history are more significant than that to which acclaimed author Trevor Royle turns his attention in CIVIL WAR. From his shrewd analyses of the characters who played their parts in the wars to his brilliantly concise descriptions of battles, Trevor Royle has produced a vivid and dramatic narrative of those turbulent years. His book also reveals how the new ideas and dispensations that followed from the wars - Cromwell's Protectorate, the Restoration of Charles II and the 'Glorious Revolution' of 1689 - made it possible for England, Ireland and Scotland to progress towards their own more distant future as democratic societies.
