On May 27, 1864, Union forces under the command of William Tecumseh Sherman attacked Confederate general Joseph E. Johnston and his men at Pickett’s Mill in Paulding County, Georgia. Following his defeat at New Hope Church, Sherman ordered Major General Oliver Howard to attack Johnston's flank, which Sherman believed to be exposed. But the Confederate soldiers were ready, and Sherman's supporting troops never arrived. What ensued was a battle that cost 2,100 lives and a defeat that Sherman left completely out of his memoirs. In this detailed historical analysis, Brad Butkovich draws on personal letters, newspaper accounts and unit histories to bring to life the battle that Union soldier and author Ambrose Bierce called “the Dead-Line.”

Book excerpt: "This is an account of the Battle of Pickett's Mill, which was fought during the Atlanta Campaign of 1864 on May 27 along the New Hope Church Line in Paulding County, Georgia ... Previous histories of the battles along the Dallas line have simplified the movements of these two days. I have chosen to chronicle them in depth in order to give a better understanding to why the battle ended up being fought where it was ... I examine the movements of the units involved at all levels, sometimes down to the skirmish lines and individual companies"--Preface.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Battle of Pickett's Mill: Foredoomed to Oblivion The Georgia Department of Natural Resources owns and operates 44 State parks and historic sites. Many of these parks and historic sites have not been sufficiently documented, which is required to verify site authenticity and provide information for the interpreters and site personnel. This report documents the history of Pickett's Mill battlefield in Fauld ing County, Georgia. The Battle of Pickett's Mill is significant in state history as the site of an important Civil War engagement fought on May 27, 1864. In one of the bloodiest battles of the Atlanta Campaign, Confederate forces repulsed a deter mined Union assault that cost the Federals approximately casualties. The battle, and the stand made by the Confederates in the Paulding County wil derness during late May and early June, blunted Sherman's drive on Atlanta and delayed the eventual siege and fall of Atlanta. Book What the Yankees Did to Us

Book excerpt: Like Chicago from Mrs. O'Leary's cow, or San Francisco from the earthquake of 1906, Atlanta has earned distinction as one of the most burned cities in American history. During the Civil War, Atlanta was wrecked, but not by burning alone. Longtime Atlantan Stephen Davis tells the story of what the Yankees did to his city. General William T. Sherman's Union forces had invested the city by late July 1864. Northern artillerymen, on Sherman's direct orders, began shelling the interior of Atlanta on 20 July, knowing that civilians still lived there and continued despite their knowledge that women and children were being killed and wounded. Countless buildings were damaged by Northern missiles and the fires they caused. Davis provides the most extensive account of the Federal shelling of Atlanta, relying on contemporary newspaper accounts more than any previous scholar. The Yankees took Atlanta in early September by cutting its last railroad, which caused Confederate forces to evacuate and allowed Sherman's troops to march in the next day. The Federal army's two and a half-month occupation of the city is rarely covered in books on the Atlanta campaign. Davis makes a point that Sherman's "wrecking" continued during the occupation when Northern soldiers stripped houses and tore other structures down for wood to build their shanties and huts. Before setting out on his "march to the sea," Sherman directed his engineers to demolish the city's railroad complex and what remained of its industrial plant. He cautioned them not to use fire until the day before the army was to set out on its march. Yet fires began the night of 11 November--deliberate arson committed against orders by Northern soldiers. Davis details the "burning" of Atlanta, and studies those accounts that attempt to estimate the extent of destruction in the city.

Book The Battles of New Hope Church

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book provides a vivid and powerful narrative of three connected battles in dense Georgia woods in the last week of May 1864. Neither side derived any tactical advantage from the fighting in this 'hell hole, ' as the soldiers described it, yet the final result was another Confederate retreat toward Atlanta in Sherman's seemingly inexorable advance toward that city." -James M. McPherson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Battle Cry of Freedom When Union general William T. Sherman marched toward Atlanta in 1864, he found himself face to face with Joseph E. Johnston's Army of Tennessee, entangled in an untamed wilderness that came to be known as the Hell Hole. During the week-long ordeal of virtually continuous fighting at New Hope Church and nearby Pickett's Mill and Dallas, a new era of trench warfare was introduced and Sherman's and Johnston's strategies for the remainder of the Atlanta Campaign were forged. In this examination of a series of actions in Paulding County, Georgia, maps pinpoint battle locations while photographs capture the sites of conflict and portray the brave men who served on both sides of the War Between the States.

Book excerpt: The Battle of Pickett's Mill, on Sherman's long road to Atlanta, is almost forgotten, partially because the major participants themselves may have wanted it that way. But there were those in the ranks who would not, who could not forget.
