Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the fishing book every game fisher should have! ISLAND STRIPERS is a result of the author's 45 years of fishing Block Island's waters and his offered contentions supported by science. This effort is filled with insights into its history and unique geology, its tides and currents, early native fishing, updates in striper biology and evolution, detailed day and night, surf and boat angling, striper diseases, major action spots and techniques, popular baits, recent record-breaking fish, fly and surf fishing interviews, forage species, various tagging agencies, results of his striper tagging, vessels used, and much, much more.... Early in 2012 he was selected for induction into the IGFA's World Fishing Hall of Fame, a result of his career tagging nearly 60,000 documented game fish for science, thanks to help from clients and friends. Of these 43,000 were striped bass for the American Littoral Society (ALS), the remainder for the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), which included bluefin tuna, various billfish and shark species. Back in 2011 SPORTFISHING magazine commenced their annual Making A Difference (MAD) Campaign, to identify fifty individuals nationwide who made significant contributions to sport fishing. Capt. Al Anderson was announced as one of their five winners. He is a well-known New England charter skipper, author, lecturer and conservationist, long recognized for his ethic of marking game fish for science.

Book excerpt: The Mohegan Bluffs of Block Island were named after a band of Mohegan Indians who came to pillage Manisses Island (Block Island). However, they were destroyed by the local Manissean Indians at the Island's tallest bluffs, located on the Southeast corner of the Island. I have heard many versions of this story over the years. But, even after hearing it for the first time when I was eleven years old, I wondered about how it all happened. Why did the two tribes fight in the first place? What did it look like? Why did they come to fight at that location? Did the Manisseans literally push or throw the Mohegans off the bluffs? This book takes what little documented information is available and pieces together a fictional account of how this action might have taken place.

Book Against the Tide

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cornelia Dean
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 1999-05-19
  • ISBN : 9780231500111
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Against the Tide written by Cornelia Dean and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-19 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans love to colonize their beaches. But when storms threaten, high-ticket beachfront construction invariably takes precedence over coastal environmental concerns—we rescue the buildings, not the beaches. As Cornelia Dean explains in Against the Tide, this pattern is leading to the rapid destruction of our coast. But her eloquent account also offers sound advice for salvaging the stretches of pristine American shore that remain. The story begins with the tale of the devastating hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas, in 1900—the deadliest natural disaster in American history, which killed some six thousand people. Misguided residents constructed a wall to prevent another tragedy, but the barrier ruined the beach and ultimately destroyed the town's booming resort business. From harrowing accounts of natural disasters to lucid ecological explanations of natural coastal processes, from reports of human interference and construction on the shore to clear-eyed elucidation of public policy and conservation interests, this book illustrates in rich detail the conflicting interests, short-term responses, and long-range imperatives that have been the hallmarks of America's love affair with her coast. Intriguing observations about America's beaches, past and present, include discussions of Hurricane Andrew's assault on the Gulf Coast, the 1962 northeaster that ravaged one thousand miles of the Atlantic shore, the beleaguered beaches of New Jersey and North Carolina's rapidly vanishing Outer Banks, and the sand-starved coast of southern California. Dean provides dozens of examples of human attempts to tame the ocean—as well as a wealth of lucid descriptions of the ocean's counterattack. Readers will appreciate Against the Tide's painless course in coastal processes and new perspective on the beach.

Book Portrait of a Woman in Silk

Download or read book Portrait of a Woman in Silk written by Zara Anishanslin and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the story of a portrait of a woman in a silk dress, historian Zara Anishanslin embarks on a fascinating journey, exploring and refining debates about the cultural history of the eighteenth-century British Atlantic world. While most scholarship on commodities focuses either on labor and production or on consumption and use, Anishanslin unifies both, examining the worlds of four identifiable people who produced, wore, and represented this object: a London weaver, one of early modern Britain’s few women silk designers, a Philadelphia merchant’s wife, and a New England painter. Blending macro and micro history with nuanced gender analysis, Anishanslin shows how making, buying, and using goods in the British Atlantic created an object-based community that tied its inhabitants together, while also allowing for different views of the Empire. Investigating a range of subjects including self-fashioning, identity, natural history, politics, and trade, Anishanslin makes major contributions both to the study of material culture and to our ongoing conversation about how to write history.

Book The Islander

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Lee Tucker
  • Publisher : Hillcrest Publishing Group
  • Release : 2011-08-02
  • ISBN : 1936401886
  • Pages : 251 pages

Download or read book The Islander written by David Lee Tucker and published by Hillcrest Publishing Group. This book was released on 2011-08-02 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea captain Alexander Hawkins has returned to his Block Island (RI) home after an extended voyage, and little has gone well in his absence. The family farm is struggling and his sweetheart greets him with cool contempt. In addition, the political atmosphere in the spring of 1776 is charged, as the American colonies scramble against the British. Many Sons of Liberty insist that freedom from British rule means freedom for all men, black and white. Yet many patriots wonder about losing their profits without slaves. Who will survive and what will it take to rekindle Alexander's passion to continue the fight for slave freedom? "Stone Wall Freedom--The Islander," the second book in Tucker's trilogy, picks up the threads of the original story and weaves a new one all its own. Drawn from the Block Island landscape, this historical fiction was written "as a tribute to the microcosm of the struggle for freedom that the men and women, both free and slave, faced on this blessed little land."

What's Next? by Michael Bivona CPA, published by IUniverse, was a finalist in the Annual Eric Hoffer Awards for Short Prose & Independent Books. After a rigorous first round of judging, less than 10% of over 1,000 entrants were privileged to have the "2013 Eric Hoffer Award FINALIST-Excellence in Independent Publishing" assigned to their books and digital presentations. The US Review of Books "Before retiring, it's wise to begin building bridges to things you are passionate about, so that when the time comes, you have a choice of which bridges you can comfortably take into the next phase of your life." Some people transition seamlessly into their "golden years," while others have a tougher time entering into retirement, wondering what's next? In Retired? What's Next?, retired accountant, Michael Bivona shares his answer. Part memoir, part retirement guide, this is both informative and inspirational. Touching on essential aspects of retirement like remaining healthy, financial matters, preparing a will, finding part-time and or volunteer work, Bivona delivers practical, real-life advice and insightful reflections. "I realized after a friend's demise that many of the possessions that he had accumulated over his lifetime and were so dear to him, were of no interest to his heirs or friends, and were disposed of like pieces of junk." Staking his own territory in the popular and compelling category of memoir writing, Bivona writes in a genuine narrative tone about how to manage the freedom, new opportunities and choices of retirement by focusing on what he knows and enjoys-traveling, dancing, boating, fishing, tennis, golf, writing, reading, and collecting books. And showing by example, Bivona frames his real-life tips on planning for a rewarding retirement around his reflections and recounting of the collective highlights and significant moments and events of his life and retirement journey with his wife, Barbara. Clearly, the Bivonas have a winning strategy for living life to the fullest in retirement. By learning not merely how to cope, but to thrive by crafting a retirement path that is focused on personal fulfillment and joyful meaning, as evidenced by their successful post-retirement journey. In Retired? What's Next?, retired readers, or those thinking of or planning for retirement, will gain insight from Bivona's shared personal wisdom and learn by example the guidance of his inner and outer retirement journeys, which can be applied to their own retirement goals for staying happy, healthy, and active.
