It is estimated that between 4.5 and 8 million soldiers and civilians died as a direct result, while some areas of Germany suffered population declines of more than 50%, also from hunger and disease. The Battle of Breitenfeld took place on September 7 or 17, 1631 (Julian or Gregorian calendar). While it is important in that it marked a major shift in initiative in the Thirty Years War, it did not completely destroy the Imperial and/or Catholic League Army, nor did it hasten the end of the conflict. In the battle simulation, I will try to correct the flaws presented in the historical analysis, testing improvements in the maneuvers. And then we will prove which maneuver will prevail, both being instructed with the best and maximum effort.

This victory in Breitenfeld allowed the Swedes to occupy and establish a secure base in Leipzig, the second most important city in the Saxon electorate. However, although significantly weakened by defeat and forced on the defensive, the Imperial Army prevented them from fully exploiting their victory and prevented John George I, Elector of Saxony, from making peace with Sweden. In the battle simulation, I will try to correct the failures presented in the historical analysis, testing improvements in the maneuvers.

Breitenfeld represented the Protestants' first major victory of the Thirty Years War. The Protestant victory ensured that the German states would not be forcibly reconverted to Roman Catholicism. The victory further confirmed Sweden's Gustavus Adolphus of the House of Vasa as a great tactical leader and induced many Protestant German states to ally themselves with Sweden against the German Catholic League, led by Maximilian I, Elector of Bavaria, and the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand II of Austria. If the first phase of the Thirty Years War, or Wars, as some historians call it, hinged on the Palatine inheritance, this phase hinged on the liberties of various bishoprics in Lorraine, and the autonomy of several Lutheran princes, including imperial Electors of Electoral Saxony and Electoral Brandenburg.
