Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘The Battle and the Breeze’ is a historical adventure story from the much-loved children’s author R.M. Ballantyne. Bill Bowls is a member of the British Navy, along with friends Ben Bolter and Tom Riggles. Together the trio find themselves caught up in all kinds of incidents whilst serving with the Navy, and even find themselves involved in the infamous Battle of the Nile, in which the British forces under Admiral Nelson engaged in a terrifying battle with the French. A fascinating and gripping tale from the prolific Scottish author. R.M. Ballantyne (1825-1894) was a Scottish artist and prolific author of mostly children’s fiction. Born in Edinburgh, Ballantyne was the ninth of ten children. At the age of 16 Ballantyne moved to Canada, where he worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company, travelling all over the country to trade for fur. He returned to Scotland in 1847 following the death of his father, and it was then that he began his literary career in earnest, writing over 100 children’s adventure books over the course of his life. Stories such as ‘The Coral Island’ and ‘The Young Fur Traders’ were hugely popular, and many of them drew on his own experiences of travelling throughout Canada. A stickler for detail, Ballantyne continued to travel widely to research the backgrounds and settings for his exciting stories. His tales became an inspiration for authors of the future, including ‘Treasure Island’ novelist Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne spent the latter period of his life living in London and Italy for the sake of his health. He died in Rome in 1894 at the age of 68.

Bill Bowls was the most amiable, gentle, kindly, and modest fellow that ever trod the deck of a man-of-war. He was also one of the most lion-hearted men in the Navy. When Bill was a baby-a round-faced, large-eyed, fat-legged baby, as unlike to the bronzed, whiskered, strapping seaman who went by the name of "Fighting Bill" as a jackdaw is to a marlinespike-when Bill was a baby, his father used to say he was just cut out for a sailor; and he was right, for the urchin was overflowing with vigour and muscular energy. He was utterly reckless, and very earnest-we might almost say desperately earnest. Whatever he undertook to do he did "with a will." He spoke with a will, listened with a will, laughed, yelled, ate, slept, wrought, and fought with a will. In short, he was a splendid little fellow, and therefore, as his father wisely said, was just cut out for a sailor. Bill seemed to hold the same opinion, for he took to the water quite naturally from the very commencement of life. He laughed with glee when his mother used to put him into the washtub, and howled with rage when she took him out. Dancing bareheaded under heavy rain was his delight, wading in ponds and rivers was his common practice, and tumbling into deep pools was his most ordinary mishap. No wonder, then, that Bill learned at an early age to swim, and also to fear nothing whatever, except a blowing-up from his father. He feared that, but he did not often get it, because, although full of mischief as an egg is full of meat, he was good-humoured and bidable, and, like all lion-hearted fellows, he had little or no malice in him. He began his professional career very early in life. When in after years he talked to his comrades on this subject, he used to say- "Yes, mates, I did begin to study navigation w'en I was about two foot high-more or less-an' I tell 'e what it is, there's nothin' like takin' old Father Time by the forelock. I was about four year old when I took my first start in the nautical way; and p'r'aps ye won't believe it, but it's a fact, I launched my first ship myself; owned her; commanded and navigated her, and was wrecked on my first voyage. It happened this way; my father was a mill-wright, he was, and lived near a small lake, where I used to splutter about a good deal. One day I got hold of a big plank, launched it after half an hour o' the hardest work I ever had, got on it with a bit of broken palm for an oar, an' shoved off into deep water. It was a splendid burst! Away I went with my heart in my mouth and my feet in the water tryin' to steady myself, but as ill luck would have it, just as I had got my ship on an even keel an' was beginnin' to dip my oar with great caution, a squall came down the lake, caught me on the starboard quarter, and threw me on my beam-ends. Of coorse I went sowse into the water, and had only time to give out one awful yell when the water shut me up. Fortnitly my father heard me; jumped in and pulled me out, but instead of kicking me or blowin' me up, he told me that I should have kept my weather-eye open an' met the squall head to wind....

Book excerpt: British Battles 493–937 deals with thirteen conflicts, either locating them correctly or explaining some of their aspects which have puzzled historians. They include the following: Mount Badon (493) at Braydon, Wiltshire; battles of the British hero Arthur (the legendary 'King Arthur') (536–7) in southern Scotland or the borders; 'Degsastan' (603) at Dawyck, on the River Tweed, Scotland; Maserfelth (642) at Forden, on the Welsh border; the Viking victory of 'Alluthèlia' (844) at Bishop Auckland, near Durham; and the English triumph of Brunanburh (937) at Lanchester, also near Durham. British Battles 493–937 is, thus, one of the most revolutionary books ever published on war in Britain and is a valuable resource for battle archeologists and research historians.

Book excerpt: Banners to the Breeze analyzes three major Civil War campaigns that were conducted following a series of devastating Confederate defeats at the hands of Ulysses S. Grant in the spring of 1862. After the recapture of Tennessee, Confederateøarmies under Braxton Bragg and Edmund Kirby Smith conducted a brilliant advance into the deeply divided state of Kentucky. Meanwhile, other Confederate forces under Sterling Price and Earl Van Dorn attempted to recapture the town of Corinth, Mississippi. As the year drew to a close, Bragg?s army was involved in a tactical draw at the battle of Stones River. Earl J. Hess mixes dramatic narrative and new analysis as he brings these campaigns together in a coherent whole. Previously unpublished historic photographs of the battlefields are included.

Book The Battle and the Breeze

Download or read book The Battle and the Breeze written by Sir Edward Ashmore and published by Alan Sutton Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sir Edward Ashmore, one of the key figures in the post-war history of the Royal Navy, rose to the highest rank in his chosen profession and later became Chief of the Defence Staff. In this his autobiography he gives a vivid insight into the life of an aspiring naval officer in the 1950s and 60s, and the preoccupations of high command during the 1970s. The Battle and the Breeze sheds much new light on many key aspects of post-1945 naval policy, such as the controversy surrounding CVA01 (the fleet carrier replacement programme), the crucial decision to procure the Sea Harrier, the lack of airborne early warning at the time of the Falklands war, and the Chevaline and Type 22 programmes. Ashmore also makes fair and sound judgements on his contemporaries such as Lord Louis Mountbatten. Not only does The Battle and the Breeze make an important contribution to our understanding of recent naval policy, but it is also potentially the most significant naval historical autobiography of the post-1945 period.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On October 29, 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck Breezy Point, home to many New York City first responders. Firefighters from the Roxbury, Rockaway Point, and Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Departments remained on duty throughout the storm, ready to assist our neighbors. That night, our quiet, oceanfront community was ravaged by the hurricane's winds and waves, leaving 202 homes destroyed and 2,219 severely damaged. Another 126 homes were then devoured by one of the largest residential fires in New York City history. In the weeks following, our actions became international news and an inspiration for a massive recovery effort. Despite freezing temperatures and primitive conditions, volunteers from across the globe fought to save and rebuild our battered community. During this time, we witnessed incredible acts of bravery, sacrifice and selflessness by the volunteers and residents who struggled to carry on. This is our story.
