Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gay bars have operated as the most visible institutions of the LGBTQ+ community in the United States for the better part of a century, from before gay liberation until after their assumed obsolescence. In The Bars Are Ours Lucas Hilderbrand offers a panoramic history of gay bars, showing how they served as the medium for queer communities, politics, and cultures. Hilderbrand cruises from leather in Chicago and drag in Kansas City to activism against gentrification in Boston and racial discrimination in Atlanta; from New York City’s bathhouses, sex clubs, and discos and Houston’s legendary bar Mary’s to the alternative scenes that reimagined queer nightlife in San Francisco and Latinx venues in Los Angeles. The Bars Are Ours explores these local sites (with additional stops in Denver, Detroit, Seattle, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, and Orlando as well as Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Texas) to demonstrate the intoxicating---even world-making---roles that bars have played in queer public life across the country.

Book Gay Bar

  • Author : Will Fellows

Book excerpt: Vivacious, unconventional, candid, and straight, Helen Branson operated a gay bar in Los Angeles in the 1950s—America’s most anti-gay decade. After years of fending off drunken passes as an entertainer in cocktail bars, this divorced grandmother preferred the wit, variety, and fun she found among homosexual men. Enjoying their companionship and deploring their plight, she gave her gay friends a place to socialize. Though at the time California statutes prohibited homosexuals from gathering in bars, Helen’s place was relaxed, suave, and remarkably safe from police raids and other anti-homosexual hazards. In 1957 she published her extraordinary memoir Gay Bar, the first book by a heterosexual to depict the lives of homosexuals with admiration, respect, and love. In this new edition of Gay Bar, Will Fellows interweaves Branson’s chapters with historical perspective provided through his own insightful commentary and excerpts gleaned from letters and essays appearing in gay publications of the period. Also included is the original introduction to the book by maverick 1950s psychiatrist Blanche Baker. The eclectic selection of voices gives the flavor of American life in that extraordinary age of anxiety, revealing how gay men saw themselves and their circumstances, and how others perceived them. Outstanding Book, selected by the Public Library Association Best Books for High Schools, selected by the American Association of School Libraries

Book This Old Monmouth of Ours

Download or read book This Old Monmouth of Ours written by William S. Hornor and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2009-06 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hampshire County was formed from the Virginia counties of Augusta and Frederick in 1754. Later, during the American Civil War, it became the first Virginia county wholly in the territory that is now West Virginia. Mrs. Vicki Horton is the compiler of a number of Hampshire County genealogical source record collections, six of which are now available from Clearfield Company (see also items 9734, 9339, 9147, 9336, and 9335). Hampshire County Virginia Personal Property Tax Lists consists of alphabetically arranged lists of all persons who paid a property tax for every year between 1800 and 1814, except for 1808, when no tax was collected. For each taxpayer Mrs. Horton has coded the number of white tithables in the household, the number of horses owned, and the number of slaves, if any. On occasion, persons are identified with supporting information, such as occupation. All the taxpayers are readily identified in the comprehensive index at the back of the volume. Since this volume contains more than 20,000 entries, it is hard to imagine a better census approximation of Hampshire County residents for this time period.

Book excerpt: Thirty-two writers share their observations and revelations about the world's most seductive city. "Whether you have lived in Paris or not, this captivating collection will transport you there." —National Geographic Traveler Paris is “the world capital of memory and desire,” concludes one of the writers in this intimate and insightful collection of memoirs of the city. Living in Paris changed these writers forever. In thirty-two personal essays—more than half of which are here published for the first time—the writers describe how they were seduced by Paris and then began to see things differently. They came to write, to cook, to find love, to study, to raise children, to escape, or to live the way it’s done in French movies; they came from the United States, Canada, and England; from Iran, Iraq, and Cuba; and—a few—from other parts of France. And they stayed, not as tourists, but for a long time; some are still living there. They were outsiders who became insiders, who here share their observations and revelations. Some are well-known writers: Diane Johnson, David Sedaris, Judith Thurman, Joe Queenan, and Edmund White. Others may be lesser known but are no less passionate on the subject. Together, their reflections add up to an unusually perceptive and multifaceted portrait of a city that is entrancing, at times exasperating, but always fascinating. They remind us that Paris belongs to everyone it has touched, and to each in a different way.

Book excerpt: Have you heard of them? The gruesome stories about the silent killers in the night, who approach their victims on inaudible steps to taste their blood? Or the beasts, which become giant wolves at a full moon and tear whole flocks of sheep in their greed? The knowledge about them is enough for one coin and almost nobody knows where they came from and why they could outlast the times until today. To understand a story, you have to know its origin. Thus begins the story of the emergence of the three clans; the vampires, the werewolves and the witches, who hand in hand create their common realm. And then she is born. On a stormy night Larissa sees the light of day, the only mixed creature of vampire and werewolf, equipped with the powers of a witch. Between the everyday madness, Larissa must not only keep her true form hidden, but also fight, because dark clouds have come up over the clans. More and more she becomes aware that the clan of witches, and thus their leader Claus, are playing a false game. Can Larissa, together with her family and friends, stop the conspiracy in time or has the threat already progressed too far? Immerse yourself in a dark world full of fantasy, tension and adventure, the search for great love, but also power games, betrayal, bitter setbacks and bitter disappointments.

Book Our Happy Hours Lgbt Voices from the Gay Bars

Download or read book Our Happy Hours Lgbt Voices from the Gay Bars written by S. Renée Bess and published by . This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the days and nights following the massacre at the Pulse Nightclub in Orlando, Florida, the world listened as various spokespersons attempted to explain to the general public exactly what the gay bar/club meant to LGBTQI people. The words "safe place," "refuge," "free to be ourselves" flew through the air. We queer writers grappled with the tragedy alongside our brothers and sisters. How could we express our feelings about the places where we could drop all pretense of conforming to the hetero-normative society's rules? What words could we gather to let the rest of the world know the pain we felt upon losing so many beautiful strangers on a night in June and in a place that had been one of our havens? How and why does the gay bar intersect so many of our lives? The stories and poems living between the covers of this book attempt to answer those questions. Spend a few happy hours with us in our gay bars. All proceeds will be given to LGBTQI Youth charities.

Book excerpt: In April of 2000, Gary Erickson turned down a $120 million offer to buy his thriving company. Today, instead of taking it easy for the rest of his life and enjoying a luxurious retirement, he's working harder than ever. Why would any sane person pass up the financial opportunity of a lifetime? Raising the Bar tells the amazing story of Clif Bar's Gary Erickson and shows that some things are more important than money. Gary Erickson and coauthor Lois Lorentzen tell the unusual and inspiring story about following your passion, the freedom to create, sustaining a business over the long haul, and living responsibly in your community and on the earth. Raising the Bar chronicles Clif Bar's ascent from a homemade energy bar to a $100 million phenomenon with an estimated 35 million consumers, and a company hailed by Inc. magazine as one of the fastest-growing private companies in the U.S. four years in a row. The book is filled with compelling personal stories from Erickson's life-trekking in the Himalayan mountains, riding his bicycle over roadless European mountain passes, climbing in the Sierra Nevada range--as inspiration for his philosophy of business. Throughout the book, Erickson--a competitive cyclist, jazz musician, world traveler, mountain climber, wilderness guide, and entrepreneur--convinces us that sustaining one's employees, community, and environment is good business. If you are a manager, executive, business owner, or board member, Raising the Bar is your personal guide to corporate integrity. If you are a sports enthusiast, environmentalist, adventure lover, intrigued by a unique corporate culture, or just interested in a good story, Raising the Bar is for you.

Book The Kid Looks Back Short Stories Tall Tales

Download or read book The Kid Looks Back Short Stories Tall Tales written by Ritchie R. Moorhead and published by Author House. This book was released on 2011-07-12 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kid Looks Back is a collection of sixty-eight stories that cover a wide range of topics. I hope that his book will be a gentle hiding place where you can go to get away from something, return to something or go where you have never been. Some of these stories are true. Others are factually true, although bit embellished. Others are outright fabrications. Most look back to a kinder, mellower time. Digging for worms, swimming in a pond, using an outhouse or wading in a river may bring gross evaluations from our urbanized cousins. I hope that this book introduces them to life with a smile. Most of the stories have a message. Many are simply humorous. Entertainment is the motive. Carefree is the mood. Try to find yourself within these pages. May the beak of reality crack your comfort shell. Start anywhere. Finish anytime. Enjoy!
