Book excerpt: As Catholics, we believe in the resurrection of the body. We profess it in our creed. We're taught that to bury and pray for the dead are corporal and spiritual works of mercy. We honor the dead in our Liturgy through the Rite of Christian burial. We do all of this, and more, because when Jesus Christ took on flesh for the salvation of our souls he also bestowed great dignity on our bodies. In Hope to Die: The Christian Meaning of Death and the Resurrection of the Body, Scott Hahn explores the significance of death and burial from a Catholic perspective. The promise of the bodily resurrection brings into focus the need for the dignified care of our bodies at the hour of death. Unpacking both Scripture and Catholic teaching, Hope to Die reminds us that we are destined for glorification on the last day. Our bodies have been made by a God who loves us. Even in death, those bodies point to the mystery of our salvation.

Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of a windswept valley, rolling hillsides, and several disjointed suburban communities, The New Bridge represents an amazing novel of intrigue, suspense, and compelling drama. A hard-working family oriented cast that was never able to completely think through periods of challenge and change, desperately tries to put their lives back on track. But their attempt at grappling with the heralding changes confronting them ends in spectacular failure. It isn’t surprising after years of effort that they fall back to their old routine of crime and violence. There’s only one problem: Crime doesn’t pay.

Book In service Experience with Traffic Noise Barriers

Download or read book In service Experience with Traffic Noise Barriers written by William Bowlby and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to highway environmental engineers, noise analysts, design engineers, maintenance personnel, planners, administrators, and others responsible for the design, selection, and maintenance of noise barriers or other traffic noise abatement policies. Information is provided on current state practice associated with noise abatement techniques and on the various products that are used. This synthesis describes the state of the art with respect to traffic noise abatement procedures, especially noise barriers. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the design, construction and maintenance of both new (Type I) and retrofit ( Type II) noise barriers. The design elements that are addressed include materials, the selection process, service life, foundations, drainage, aesthetics, and safety. The construction section covers technical problems related to surface effects, durability, snow damage, and costs. Other noise abatement measures such as insulation and highway design alternatives are also addressed. The issue of public demand and availability funding is included, and recommendations are made to improve the situation.

Book Aesthetic Concrete Barrier Design

Download or read book Aesthetic Concrete Barrier Design written by Delbert Lance Bullard and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2006 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report contains guidelines for aesthetic treatment of concrete safety shape barriers. The report will be of particular interest to design and safety practitioners with responsibility for roadside safety improvements. The increasing application of context-sensitive design solutions for highway projects has created a national need for aesthetic improvement of typical highway features. Requests for concrete barrier treatments and bridge rails that contribute to the overall aesthetic experience are increasing. Concrete barriers (e.g., New Jersey, F-shapes, single-slope, and vertical-face designs) are often the barriers of choice in urban and suburban environments. Many transportation agencies and communities have expressed a desire for aesthetic treatments for these standard shapes. To date, there has been limited evaluation to determine which aesthetic treatments are safe and practical. Designers need guidance regarding the safety implications of aesthetic treatments for concrete barriers.
