Download or read book Duration of Load written by Alberta Research Council. Forestry Department and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While oriented strandboard (OSB) is increasingly accepted as a structural building product, its application in stressed skin panels (SSP) is limited because of a lack of engineering data for short- and long-term flexural behaviour. In 1986/87, 24 SSPs were constructed, six with flanges of Douglas-fir plywood, six with flanges of Canadian softwood plywood (CSP), and 12 with flanges of OSB. Half were tested for short-term (elastic) behaviour and the other half for long-term (creep) behaviour. Long-term creep testing was begun in February 1987 and continued through to 1989/90. This report presents the results of the 1989/90 testing, which continued measuring and recording test data for deflection, relative humidity, and temperature on the three types of panels; established model predictions for each type of load duration set up for each type of SSP; compared prediction and experimental results using accepted analytical methods and indicated whether the models can be used for accurate prediction of time dependent properties of the different SSPs; determined the value of model parameters that can be related to mechanical properties of SSPs and compared those results to those of other jurisdictions; and indicated the practical significance of the results for house performance.

Book excerpt: 'Young-Old' examines contemporary architectural and urban mutations that have emerged as a consequence of one of the key demographic transformations of our time: population aging. Distinguishing between different phases of old age, it identifies the group known as the "Young-Old" as a remarkable petri dish for experimental forms of subjectivity, collectivity, and environment. In investigating this field of latent urban and architectural novelty, 'Young-Old' asserts both the escapist and emancipatory dimensions of these practices. Richly illustrated with drawings, maps, and photographs, the volume documents phenomena ranging from the continuous, golf cart accessible urban landscapes of the world's largest retirement community in Florida and the mono-national urbanizaciones of "the retirement home of Europe" on Costa del Sol, to the Dutch-themed residential community at Huis Ten Bosch in the south of Japan. AUTHOR: Deane Simpson is an architect and urbanist teaching at the Royal Danish Academy School of Architecture Copenhagen and at BAS Bergen, where he is professor of architecture and urbanism. 250 illustrations

Download or read book A Pattern Language written by Christopher Alexander and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-20 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You can use this book to design a house for yourself with your family; you can use it to work with your neighbors to improve your town and neighborhood; you can use it to design an office, or a workshop, or a public building. And you can use it to guide you in the actual process of construction. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are now publishing a major statement in the form of three books which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building and planning, which will we hope replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, The Oregon Experiment, and this book, A Pattern Language. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation of the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. At the core of the books, too, is the point that in designing their environments people always rely on certain "languages," which, like the languages we speak, allow them to articulate and communicate an infinite variety of designs within a forma system which gives them coherence. This book provides a language of this kind. It will enable a person to make a design for almost any kind of building, or any part of the built environment. "Patterns," the units of this language, are answers to design problems (How high should a window sill be? How many stories should a building have? How much space in a neighborhood should be devoted to grass and trees?). More than 250 of the patterns in this pattern language are given: each consists of a problem statement, a discussion of the problem with an illustration, and a solution. As the authors say in their introduction, many of the patterns are archetypal, so deeply rooted in the nature of things that it seemly likely that they will be a part of human nature, and human action, as much in five hundred years as they are today.

Download or read book Modern in the Middle written by Susan Benjamin and published by The Monacelli Press, LLC. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first survey of the classic twentieth-century houses that defined American Midwestern modernism. Famed as the birthplace of that icon of twentieth-century architecture, the skyscraper, Chicago also cultivated a more humble but no less consequential form of modernism--the private residence. Modern in the Middle: Chicago Houses 1929-75 explores the substantial yet overlooked role that Chicago and its suburbs played in the development of the modern single-family house in the twentieth century. In a city often associated with the outsize reputations of Frank Lloyd Wright and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the examples discussed in this generously illustrated book expand and enrich the story of the region's built environment. Authors Susan Benjamin and Michelangelo Sabatino survey dozens of influential houses by architects whose contributions are ripe for reappraisal, such as Paul Schweikher, Harry Weese, Keck & Keck, and William Pereira. From the bold, early example of the "Battledeck House" by Henry Dubin (1930) to John Vinci and Lawrence Kenny's gem the Freeark House (1975), the generation-spanning residences discussed here reveal how these architects contended with climate and natural setting while negotiating the dominant influences of Wright and Mies. They also reveal how residential clients--typically middle-class professionals, progressive in their thinking--helped to trailblaze modern architecture in America. Though reflecting different approaches to site, space, structure, and materials, the examples in Modern in the Middle reveal an abundance of astonishing houses that have never been collected into one study--until now.
