Book excerpt: Everywhere England go to play Test cricket, the Barmy Army follows, giving them unstinting support and always searching for the best songs, chants and banter to help their team overcome the opposition. This hilarious book collects the best and funniest songs and chants from almost 20 years of enthusiastic backing. The book not only reveals how the chants were created, but also how the players responded to hearing their names being sung and how much it meant to them. There are also revealing interviews with some of the Barmy Army's leading songwriters, who provide a fascinating insight into what makes for a truly great chant. Sometimes, of course, the Barmy Army targeted the opposition, and 'The Mitchell Johnson Song' helped England on their way to a famous Ashes triumph in 2010-11. From the classic 'Ball and Chain' to the more recent 'Swann Will Tear You Apart', this book is an ideal way to get into the true Barmy spirit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-hand account of the complex, bloody history of Myanmar and the origins of the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas In 2011, Myanmar embarked in a democratic transition from a brutal military rule that culminated four years later, when the first free election in decades saw a landslide for the party of celebrated Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. Yet, even as the international community was celebrating a new dawn, old wars were raging in the northern borderlands. A crisis was emerging in western Arakan state where the regime intensified its oppression of the vulnerable Muslim Rohingya community. By 2017, the conflict had escalated into a military onslaught against the Rohingya that provoked the most desperate refugee crisis of our times, as over 750,000 of them fled their homes to neighbouring Bangladesh. In The Burmese Labyrinth, journalist Carlos Sardiña Galache gives the in depth story of the country. Burma has always been an uneasy balance between multiple ethnic groups and religions. He examines the deep roots behind the ethnic divisions that go back prior to the colonial period, and so shockingly exploded in recent times. This is a powerful portrait of a nation in perpetual conflict with itself.

Book Leave Me Alone I m Reading

Download or read book Leave Me Alone I m Reading written by Maureen Corrigan and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this delightful memoir, the book critic for NPR’s Fresh Air reflects on her life as a professional reader. Maureen Corrigan takes us from her unpretentious girlhood in working-class Queens, to her bemused years in an Ivy League Ph.D. program, from the whirl of falling in love and marrying (a fellow bookworm, of course), to the ordeal of adopting a baby overseas, always with a book at her side. Along the way, she reveals which books and authors have shaped her own life—from classic works of English literature to hard-boiled detective novels, and everything in between. And in her explorations of the heroes and heroines throughout literary history, Corrigan’s love for a good story shines.

Book Law and Custom in Burma and the Burmese Family

Download or read book Law and Custom in Burma and the Burmese Family written by Maung Maung and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, conceived in Rangoon, nourished and delivered at the Yale Law School, attempts to study the customary laws of Burma in the context of the country's legal system. Customary laws govern the affairs of the family mainly while codes and precedents designed and developed on the imported British common law system enjoy exclusive control and authority over the remaining legal relationships in society. This volume looks at the legal system in outline and the customary law of the Bur mese family in some detail. The customary laws of other indigenous groups, such as the Shans, the Kachins, the Chins, the Kayah, the Mon and the Arakanese, also need to be studied, restated and appraised, for though the laws are similar there are shades of differences, and in build ing the Union of Burma it is important to build strongly on the simi larities while giving due respect to the differences. It is, therefore, hoped, that this volume will launch a series of studies on the customary laws of the peoples of Burma in a large context and with high aim. There are many needs for continuing research in the field of custom ary law. One is to discover the customs of the people as they really are, not just what they are presumed to be in early legal treatises or in later judicial decisions.
