Book Bent out of Shape from Society s Pliers

Download or read book Bent out of Shape from Society s Pliers written by John Wells and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2003-10-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of articles covers a wide range of artists in the world of popular music including Bob Dylan, the Doors, Bruce Springsteen, Robert Johnson, Tracy Chapman, Lou Reed, and The Rolling Stones. Many of these artists write and sing about a sense of loss, alienation, and frustration with the American socio-economic system. In addition, the volume shows how these artists use creative language to communicate a sense of the grotesque, absurd, disharmony, and dread in the lives of the characters in their songs.

Book Queering Sexualities in Turkey

Download or read book Queering Sexualities in Turkey written by Cenk Özbay and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite its some of its more liberal and democratic characteristics - when compared to many other countries in the Middle East - the more conservative elements within Turkish politics and society have made gains over the past decades. As a result, like many others in the region, Turkish society has multiple standards when naming, evaluating and reacting to men who have sex with men. Cenk Ozbay argues that overall, self-identified gay men (as well as men who practice clandestine same-sex acts) are most of the time marginalised, ostracised and rendered 'immoral' in both everyday practices and social institutions. He offers in this book an analysis of the concept of masculinity as central to redefining boundaries of class, gender and sexuality, particularly looking at the dynamics between self-identified gay men and straight-acting male prostitutes, or 'rent boys'. A result of in-depth interviews with both self-identified gay men and rent boys, Ozbay explores the changing discourses and meaning of class, gender and queer sexualities, and how these three are embedded within urban and familial narratives.

Book Apocalypse Then

Download or read book Apocalypse Then written by Mike Bogue and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2017-09-14 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States, the only country to have dropped the bomb, and Japan, the only one to have suffered its devastation, understandably portray the nuclear threat differently on film. American science fiction movies of the 1950s and 1960s generally proclaim that it is possible to put the nuclear genie back in the bottle. Japanese films of the same period assert that once freed the nuclear genie can never again be imprisoned. This book examines genre films from the two countries released between 1951 and 1967--including Godzilla (1954), The Mysterians (1957), The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957), On the Beach (1959), The Last War (1961) and Dr. Strangelove (1964)--to show the view from both sides of the Pacific.
