Capelin were the principal food of cod in February and March and were supplemented by herring and krill (euphausiids) in April and May. Calanus, shrimp, young cod and perch, ctenophores, and coal fish also were found in cod stomachs in different locations and months. Variations in numbers of cod and their fat content are related to regions, month, food, and cod lengths. Their migrations through the Barents Sea are traced. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book discusses to what extent the precautionary approach to fisheries management is reflected in the MSC Fisheries Standard and in the certification of four clusters of fisheries in polar waters. Certification according to private sustainability standards (ecolabelling) has become an important addition to public fisheries management in recent years. The major global ecolabel in terms of comprehensiveness and coverage is the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) Fisheries Standard. Becoming and remaining certified requires continuous behavioural adaptation from fisheries through a fine-meshed system of improvement conditions attached to certification. Focus is on how certification has influenced fisher behaviour and state practice. In the Southern Ocean krill and toothfish fisheries, MSC certification has generated new scientific knowledge about the stocks. In the Barents Sea cod and haddock fisheries, fishing companies have voluntarily adapted their behaviour to reduce the fishery’s impacts on endangered, threatened and protected species and bottom habitats. In the local lumpfish fisheries in Greenland, Iceland and Norway, measures have been introduced to reduce the effects on seabirds and marine mammals. In the Northeast Atlantic mackerel fisheries, impacts have been more modest. Private certification is no panacea, but it seems to have found a niche as a supplement to national legislation and international agreements.

Book excerpt: The period of fattening, composition of food, intensity of feeding, as well as migration to wintering places in the southern Barents Sea and in the Bjornoya-Spitsbergen region are diverse. The fattening period is shorter in cold years than in warm years. In the southern part of the sea, the fattening period begins in January-February, but in the Bjornoya-Spitsbergen region in May-June. In the southern part of the Barents Sea the most active feeding period is in April-May, but in the northwestern region in June-July. In the southern part one can observe a certain decrease in feeding intensity during June-August. In September, a second increase in the intensity of feeding takes place. In the northwestern region, the cod feeds intensely throughout the summer-autumn period. In cold years the cod inhabits the southern region throughout the summer, mainly in the Murman coastal zone. The occurrence of cod on the summer- autumn feeding grounds depends on the distribution of food objects. In September-October, by the end of fattening period prior to migration to wintering grounds, the cod forms dense concentrations. By analyzing the behavior of cod in cold years it is seen that in 1956 and 1963 the cod reacted swiftly to the cooling and departed far west to wintering grounds. These data enable us to assume that the generations that appeared and spent their first years of life under cold conditions, are less sensitive to water temperature changes than the cod born in warm years.
