Book The Bank for International Ideas from Intellectual Capital to Intellectual Property

Download or read book The Bank for International Ideas from Intellectual Capital to Intellectual Property written by Paula Singleton and published by Leonard S. Johnson. This book was released on 2011-03-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do we connect Good Ideas with the Investment community in Today's Economy on a Global Scale? In this Digital Age of the 21st century, what is now required is a New Economic System, a New Platform that can measure economics and the currency of trading back and forth similar to the barter and trade systems of the past --- Intellectual Capital --- is the "New Currency of today". This new form of capital is the current world structure, and as we look upon this turning point today in our lives, taking this opportunity to move forward not only individually, but collectively as a community and globally as a world order. This new Intellectual Capital is leading us to a New Economic Order. Today we see the world at a strategic inflection point where it is growing as well as advancing in the areas of Intellectual Capital. Of course there are several known companies like Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, Amazon, eBay and many others. But we must never forget that Intellectual Property is what also created the automobile. It was Henry Ford's Intellectual Capital that brought automation of the automobile, which created the wealth of the auto industry. We then remember the minds of Andrew Carnegie and John D. Rockefeller, which created industrialization on a level that, is still seen today, Rockefeller also added oil to his list of contributions and moved forward the car industry. The phenomenon of the social network website Facebook is a good analogy. Users can post a profile easily and with no barriers. The result is over 500 million people have added profiles so far in more than 170 countries. This has resulted in an incredible impact of one platform growing by collectivism. The financial brilliance of Goldman Sachs has seen this and blessed it with its golden gavel by partnering with Facebook which is now valued at $50 Billion Dollars. This valuation is not focus on advertising capability only or any other traditional measurable financial value. This value is placed on growth, and the number of people in the system as well as the future possibilities to reach these people directly. The key is anyone can enter a profile from anyplace in the world, because the barrier is so low. Facebook is not focused on economic development or global prosperity. But The Bank for International Ideas is.

Book Priests of Prosperity

Download or read book Priests of Prosperity written by Juliet Johnson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-02-25 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Priests of Prosperity explores the unsung revolutionary campaign to transform postcommunist central banks from command-economy cash cows into Western-style monetary guardians. Juliet Johnson conducted more than 160 interviews in seventeen countries with central bankers, international assistance providers, policymakers, and private-sector finance professionals over the course of fifteen years. She argues that a powerful transnational central banking community concentrated in Western Europe and North America integrated postcommunist central bankers into its network, shaped their ideas about the role of central banks, and helped them develop modern tools of central banking. Johnson's detailed comparative studies of central bank development in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan take readers from the birth of the campaign in the late 1980s to the challenges faced by central bankers after the global financial crisis. As the comfortable certainties of the past collapse around them, today’s central bankers in the postcommunist world and beyond find themselves torn between allegiance to their transnational community and its principles on the one hand and their increasingly complex and politicized national roles on the other. Priests of Prosperity will appeal to a diverse audience of scholars in political science, finance, economics, geography, and sociology as well as to central bankers and other policymakers interested in the future of international finance, global governance, and economic development.

Book A Global Idea

Download or read book A Global Idea written by Mayssoun Sukarieh and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-08-15 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Global Idea outlines how youth—as shown by the Arab Spring uprisings and subsequent state responses—became a prominent social and political category during the first two decades of the twenty-first century in the Middle East. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, interview data, and textual analysis, Mayssoun Sukarieh explains that the spread of youth as an important category is linked to the operation of a "global youth development complex," a diverse transnational network of state, private sector, civil society, and international development aid organizations that worked through key urban areas such as Washington, DC, Amman, and Dubai. In its analysis of the arrival, extension, and embedding of the youth development complex in the Middle East during this period, A Global Idea addresses a broader question that is of global and not just regional concern. How are certain ideas that are central to the working and reproduction of global capitalism able to travel the world so that they are found virtually everywhere?

Book International Development

Download or read book International Development written by Bruce Currie-Alder and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thinking on development informs and inspires the actions of people, organizations, and states in their continuous effort to invent a better world. This volume examines the ideas behind development: their origins, how they have changed and spread over time, and how they may evolve over the coming decades. It also examines how the real-life experiences of different countries and organizations have been inspired by, and contributed to, thinking on development. The extent to which development 'works' depends in part on particular local, historical, or institutional contexts. General policy prescriptions fail when the necessary conditions that make them work are either absent, ignored, or poorly understood. There is a need to grasp how people understand their own development experience. If the countries of the world are varied in every way, from their initial conditions to the degree of their openness to outside money and influence, and success is not centred in any one group, it stands to reason that there cannot be a single recipe for development. Each chapter provides an analytical survey of thinking about development that highlights debates and takes into account critical perspectives. It includes contributions from scholars and practitioners from the global North and the global South, spanning at least two generations and multiple disciplines. It will be a key reference on the concepts and theories of development - their origins, evolution, and trajectories - and act as a resource for scholars, graduate students, and practitioners.

Book Fragile by Design

Download or read book Fragile by Design written by Charles W. Calomiris and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why stable banking systems are so rare Why are banking systems unstable in so many countries—but not in others? The United States has had twelve systemic banking crises since 1840, while Canada has had none. The banking systems of Mexico and Brazil have not only been crisis prone but have provided miniscule amounts of credit to business enterprises and households. Analyzing the political and banking history of the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Brazil through several centuries, Fragile by Design demonstrates that chronic banking crises and scarce credit are not accidents. Calomiris and Haber combine political history and economics to examine how coalitions of politicians, bankers, and other interest groups form, why they endure, and how they generate policies that determine who gets to be a banker, who has access to credit, and who pays for bank bailouts and rescues. Fragile by Design is a revealing exploration of the ways that politics inevitably intrudes into bank regulation.

Book The Politics of Expertise in International Organizations

Download or read book The Politics of Expertise in International Organizations written by Annabelle Littoz-Monnet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume advances existing research on the production and use of expert knowledge by international bureaucracies. Given the complexity, technicality and apparent apolitical character of the issues dealt with in global governance arenas, ‘evidence-based’ policy-making has imposed itself as the best way to evaluate the risks and consequences of political action in global arenas. In the absence of alternative, democratic modes of legitimation, international organizations have adopted this approach to policy-making. By treating international bureaucracies as strategic actors, this volume address novel questions: why and how do international bureaucrats deploy knowledge in policy-making? Where does the knowledge they use come from, and how can we retrace pathways between the origins of certain ideas and their adoption by international administrations? What kind of evidence do international bureaucrats resort to, and with what implications? Which types of knowledge are seen as authoritative, and why? This volume makes a crucial contribution to our understanding of the way global policy agendas are shaped and propagated. It will be of great interest to scholars, policy-makers and practitioners in the fields of public policy, international relations, global governance and international organizations.
