Book The Baldwin Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Baldwin Primer Classic Reprint written by May Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baldwin Primer The lessons in this book have been prepared in accordance with well-established principles of mental science and child study. In addition to the ideas common to most primers have adopted the principle of progressive expansion, whereby the more complex notions of language, number, and form, are built up by successive steps from elementary ideas. In teaching words the synthetical and analytical methods are followed simultane ously. The letters of the alphabet, as set tasks, are deeply impressed on the mind, while at the same time the child learns to read by recognition of words as wholes; finally he instinctively unites the results of both methods to a complete and detailed understanding of the words. Another recognized principle is that of proceeding from the known to the unknown; in a primer the most familiar objects should form the basis of the lessons. The script alphabet is as important as the usual Roman alphabet. The child should learn to read both from the start. Do not begin the writing lessons too soon; they should be preceded by a considerable amount of free-arm movement at the blackboard or with the brush. The first lessons in writing must be on a large scale, with movements free from the shoulder; a brush dipped in ink, a piece of chalk on the blackboard, a good sized pencil and the like are the proper materials. It is not yet sufficiently understood by teachers that the movements of writing cannot be successfully learned until the child has gained control over his arms, hands, and fingers. The stick laying, paper folding, modeling, and the songs have this end in view in addition to the particular facts they are designed to teach. Book Baldwin s Biographical Stories

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baldwin's Biographical Stories: For Young American Readers When Daniel Boone was a child the land west of the Alleghanies was a wilderness inhabited only by Indians. But in Virginia, and other places east of the mountains, there were fine houses with broad porches and large, richly-furnished rooms. There stately men in powdered wigs and knee-breeches, and queenly dames in stiff brocades and high-heeled shoes, lived and brought up little American boys and girls after the fashion of their English cousins. However, it was not. in such a house nor among such people that Daniel Boone learned to walk, and talk, and think. His father was a poor man who lived in a rude log cabin on the outskirts of a dark forest in Pennsylvania. There Daniel spent his happy childhood. The cabin was small, but that made it very snug in winter when the snow was blowing outside and the logs were blazing in the great stone fireplace. Book An American Citizen

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An American Citizen: The Life of William Henry Baldwin, Jr. It is hardly eight years since I saw a great figure in the insurance world talking a little haughtily to a group of approving listeners. With much eloquence and tingling with moral indignation, he was making observations on the "muck-raker." His vocabulary of invective was too limited to express all that he felt on this subject. At that moment the storm was gathering against his own and other towering insurance companies. He was stung to the quick as by a monstrous injustice. It seemed to him very simple. It was the work of the "agitator" and of creatures properly called "muck-rakers." His main reason for resentment was that "they were destroying public confidence." He was very impressive about this. Business and general prosperity, he said, could not endure for a month without confidence. It was the one source of our welfare. Book The Ministry of David Baldwin

Download or read book The Ministry of David Baldwin written by Henry Thomas Colestock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-09 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ministry of David Baldwin: A Novel David had very few regular correspondents, and there was no reason for his expecting a letter from any of them this morning. The truth is, he was not expecting a letter from any one in particular, but was just hoping that the morning's mail would bring him a letter; any letter, even a circular would be better than none at all. The problem of his future was bearing hard upon David Baldwin this morning. He had no plans for to-morrow; and today would close a ten years' course in the schools. His thoughts swept rapidly over the years of his student life. Seven years ago on his graduation from the academy, it had seemed as if the whole world was waiting for him to put his shoulders under some of its burdens. Indeed, he had felt the world's need calling him so urgently, that it had seemed quite out of the question to go on with his college studies. A smile passed over his face as he thought of the eagerness with which he had then looked out on life. Yes, that graduation from the academy marked the highest point he had ever attained - in his own estimation of him self. Baldwin I do not wish to write out all my mistakes and crookedness, but I shall try to chronicle as much as I may of the good that it has been mine to do and enjoy in the nineteenth and twentieth centu ries. The time in which I have lived has been the most wonderful in the history of the world's progress. For many generations men appeared to be content to move in the treadmill rounds of their ancestors. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Baldwin: Being Dialogues on Views and Aspirations To be brief, Baldwin exists; and it matters not whether in the kingdom of the subjective or in that of the objective. What is more important, is of his mode of existence. If, as is usually the case, and as I distinctly request, this introductory chapter be read the last of all, the reader will not require to be told that the existence of Baldwin has been, so far as the Past is concerned, equally uneventful'and eccentric He has, in good sooth (and this may lead some to consider him as a denizen of the subjective world), lived a life of exclusively mental experiences, never doing or being done to, but merely receiving a series of impressions and responding thereunto by a series of Opinions. These opinions, if you have read the book, you will sufficiently understand there remains only to explain the circumstances which conduced to their formation in other words, to say something of Baldwin's impressions. Book The New Beacon Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The New Beacon Primer Classic Reprint written by James Hiram Fassett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Beacon Primer The New Beacon Primer is a simple reader, based upon the child's interests and the vocabulary of the home. The power' derived from a knowledge of phonics has always been admitted by educators, but the stilted and mechanical readers of the past did much to throw dis credit upon any strictly phonetic system. The author of the New Beacon Primer has avoided expressions that are obviously dragged in for their phonetic value, and while he has provided constant opportunities for practice in the text, there is no sacrifice of unity or of dramatic interest. This is made possible by his method of organization. Underlying the science of phonics are a few principles which are so vital and so essential to successful teaching that the first instruction given to the child should be in strict accordance with them. The Beacon system follows the deductions of those who have made a Special study of the science of speech and the practice of our great English dictionaries. Teachers may therefore feel confident that they are working in harmony with the leading authorities on the subject.
