Book excerpt: Lost in the jungle with no guarantee of survival, who will find them first? This fiction is inspired by a real event which occurred in 1995. Two young girls lost their way in a dense tropical rainforest the size of Britain. They had only their cultural heritage and untested survival instincts to guide them to safety. Harry Horsham, the owner of a logging company, organizes his men into a complex search party to help find the girls. Each day that passes without them being found is a day too many. Not only do the girls have to worry about the unknown dangers of the rainforest, they also have to worry about another search party that hopes to find them. An established gang of human traffickers also takes up the challenge of finding the lost girls. However, their intentions may be more sinister than what the rainforest has in store for them. The two search parties have different motivations in finding the girls, but there can only be one outcome. Nature must take its course. Can the Balata sisters survive in the rainforest and will the right search party find them first? The Balata Sisters is the first novel by Hamley Case, who managed a sizeable logging company in one of the most unpopulated and untamed forests in South America.

In practice, however, this is not always the case. In an anthropological study of Palestinian women from different stratas of society, Annelies Moors examines under what circumstances they claim property rights and when they are prevented from doing so. The combination of oral history and written legal sources presents an informed and sophisticated challenge to the conclusions of existing literature on the region.

Book Tiger Meet My Sister

Download or read book Tiger Meet My Sister written by Rick Reilly and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2014-05-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this hilariously funny essay collection, ESPN columnist Rick Reilly compiles the best of his sports columns—essays that include his expert opinion on athlete tattoos, NFL cheerleaders, and even running with the bulls in Pamplona. Rick Reilly has no compunction telling readers, in his quick-witted style, how he really feels about some of the most popular sports figures of our time. Wondering about quarterback Jay Cutler? “Cutler is the kind of guy you just want to pick up and throw into a swimming pool, which is exactly what Peyton Manning and two linemen did one year at the Pro Bowl.” Or how about Tiger Woods? “Sometimes you wonder where Tiger Woods gets his public-relations advice. Gary Busey?” But for every brazen takedown, Reilly has written a heartwarming story of the power of sports to heal the wounded and lift the downtrodden: the young Ravens fan with cancer who called the plays for a few—victorious—games in 2012, or the onetime top NFL recruit who was finally exonerated after serving five years for a crime he didn’t commit. Whether he makes you laugh, cry, or just gets under your skin, Rick Reilly is sure to offer a unique and hilarious perspective on your favorite golf players, football teams, MVPs, and more. Rick Reilly has been called “one of the funniest humans on the planet—an indescribable amalgam of Dave Barry, Jim Murray, and Lewis Grizzard, with the timing of Jay Leno and the wit of Johnny Carson” (Publishers Weekly). With a new introduction and updates from Reilly on his most talked-about columns, Tiger, Meet My Sister... makes the perfect gift for sports fans of all kinds.

Book Guyana

Download or read book Guyana written by Matthew French Young and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As diamond prospector, gold-panner, surveyor of the uncharted bush, hunter and builder of roads, Matthew Young spent over fifty years working in the wild forests and savannahs of his native Guyana. He writes vividly of the beauties and hazards of that life, of marauding jaguars, deadly labaria snakes dropping from the trees, piranhas that can strip the flesh from a body in seconds and thirty foot anacondas that can squeeze the life out of a man; of battling up river against life-threatening rapids and thunderous waterfalls. His is a story of resourcefulness and wonder, of a practical man who never lost his sense of the forest's mystery, who learnt a profound respect for the culture, knowledge and skills of the Amerindians of the interior. This is a fascinating social history from colonial times to the 1980s, including Young's involvement with the aftermath of the tragic mass suicide of over 900 followers of the American cult leader Jim Jones at Jonestown in the Guyanese interior. Guyana: The Lost El Dorado gives an engrossing account of one of the last untouched tropical rainforests in the world and its teeming wildlife. It is an indispensable guidebook for the intrepid armchair traveller, gold prospector and diamond panner!

Book Notebooks of a Wandering Monk

Download or read book Notebooks of a Wandering Monk written by Matthieu Ricard and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 751 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoirs of renowned Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard and his extraordinary journey toward inner freedom and compassion in action. Matthieu Ricard began his spiritual transformation at the age of twenty-one, in Darjeeling, India, when he met Tibetan teacher Kangyur Rinpoche, who deeply impressed the young man with his extraordinary quality of being. In Notebooks of a Wandering Monk, Ricard tells the simple yet extraordinary story of his journey and the remarkable men and women who inspired him along the way, including Kangyur Rinpoche, Dilgo Khyentse Rinpoche, and the fourteenth Dalai Lama, as well as great luminaries such as Desmond Tutu, Jane Goodall, and a number of leading scientists. Growing up, Ricard, the son of philosopher Jean-François Revel and artist Yahne Le Toumelin, regularly found himself in the company of intellectuals and artists such as Luis Buñuel, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Igor Stravinsky. Young Ricard loved nature, classical music, and science and dreamed of unlocking the mysteries of molecular biology. But, six years after meeting Kangyur Rinpoche, Ricard gave up a promising career in genetics to pursue a meditative life in the remote Himalayas. While spending half a century in India, Bhutan, and Nepal, he visited Tibet more than twenty times and spent years publishing rare Tibetan texts and photographing his spiritual teachers and the world in which they lived. Elegantly translated by Jesse Browner and accompanied by more than fifty full-color photographs, some of which are Ricard’s own, Notebooks of a Wandering Monk charts Ricard’s lifelong path to wisdom and compassion. This candid and reflective memoir will inspire all readers, wherever they may be on their own journey to a meaningful and well-lived life.

Book Growing Up Palestinian

Download or read book Growing Up Palestinian written by Laetitia Bucaille and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2006-03-19 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This remarkable book tells the inside story of three young men caught up in the Palestinian Intifada. Through their stories, the tangled and tragic web of the past twenty years of the most enduring conflict in the Middle East unfolds before us. For over a decade, Laetitia Bucaille lived in the Occupied Territories for months at a time, gaining rare access to the three militants she calls Sami, Najy, and Bassam and many other Palestinians they cross paths with-those who grew up during the first Intifada and whose lives became bound up with the second, which erupted in 2000. The result is an intimate yet unsentimental portrait of daily life in the West Bank and Gaza from the mid-1980s to the present. In a new afterword, the author examines the social and political developments in the Occupied Territories since the book's publication in 2004, including the implications of Yasser Arafat's death and the challenges and opportunities presented to his elected successor, Mahmood Abbas."--Book jacket.
