Book Oil and the International Economy

Download or read book Oil and the International Economy written by Georg Koopmann and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil price increases of the 1970s left deep marks on the world economy. They led to a massive redistribution of income in favor of oil-producing countries, and caused serious disruption of growth, imbalances in foreign trade, and problems of stability in oil-importing countries. Despite the present levelling off, the authors suggest that more price increases remain a distinct possibility. "Oil and the International Economy "examines the effects of rising oil prices on the international financial system and identifies ways that oil-importing countries can overcome the financial and adjustment problems caused by them. The authors project the long-term trend in real oil prices and present economic policy options to help avoid future financial problems for industrialized and developing nations alike. Contents: The World Oil Market after the Oil Price Shocks; Future Trends in the Demand for Oil; Future Trends in the Supply of Oil; Balance-of-Payments and Exchange-Rate Adjustment: Current Account Developments in Times of Rising Oil Prices and Effects on Exchange Rates; The Effects of Real Oil Price Increases on Energy and Raw Material Prices; Repercussions on the General Price Level; Implications for the German Monetary and Exchange Rate Policy; Are Real Oil Price Increases a Brake on Growth?; Options for Economic Policy; The Struggle for Markets in the Oil-Producing Countries; The Oil-Producing Countries as Competitors in the Manufacturing Sector; Consequences for Trade Between Oil-Importing Countries.

Book Threat To Development

Download or read book Threat To Development written by William Loehr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Far from transferring resources from the rich to the poor, as intended, the New International Economic Order (NIEO)—if fully implemented—is more likely to transfer them from the poor to the rich. Thus assert the authors, who present their analysis of trade and investment data in support of their conclusions. The NIEO, a program adopted by the United Nations, proposes increased prices of primary products, tariff preferences for exports of less developed countries to the industrial world, a code of conduct for multinational corporations, international monetary reform, debt forgiveness or rescheduling for the third world, plus a number of other provisions designed to help third world countries. But, the authors contend, all these provisions will further enrich the already rich within the third world, while adding to the poverty of the already poor. Higher prices for primary products would benefit the rich producers at the expense of the poor who buy them. Debt rescheduling would help only those rich enough to incur debt in the first place; because aid is available in finite quantities, this help might be at the expense of the poor. Likewise, trade preferences would also help the rich, who are the major exporters. The NIEO has been widely acclaimed in industrialized as well as in third world countries; this book demonstrates how the effects of the NIEO could well be the opposite from what is widely believed.

Book Oil Gas Databook for Developing Countries

Download or read book Oil Gas Databook for Developing Countries written by Derek Fee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-05 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oil crises of 1973 and 1979 have had a profound effect on the economies of the less developed countries (LDCs). The African, Carib bean and Pacific (ACP) countries associated with the European Com munity as joint signatories of the Lome conventions have suffered in equal measure with other LDCs. Energy, because of its contribution to national development, is of primary importance to the ACP countries and since oil forms the basis of the energy sector in these countries any increase in price leads to considerable economic knock-on effects. The majority, over 90%, of the ACP countries are energy importers, that means oil importers. Their economies are based in the main on agriculture which normally contributes most to total GDP. Exports from these countries are mainly primary commodities such as coffee, cotton, tea, cereals, tobacco, copper, zinc, lead, cobalt etc. In most of the ACP nations, exports of commodities comprise over four-fifths of total merchandise exports. Imports, meanwhile, consist mainly of capital goods (including transport equipment), manufactures, petroleum and food stuffs. As a result of the international recession, falling commodity prices and the increase in crude oil prices, the balance of payments position of these countries has deteriorated sharply over the past few years. The resulting shortage of foreign exchange prevents many nations from importing sufficient raw materials and capital equipment for their industries. Consequently, plant utilisation rates are running at very low levels.
