Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Balance of Pain: And Other Poems The Balance of Pain. Scene I. Theodore. Pain and still pain! pain at each turn of being! Pain at life's opening and the last dark hour! Pain in the flesh and in the soul's vague depths - Pain as the law of growth - the due of change - Pain as the needful attribute of life. Where shall it end? With body and with form? Not so, e'en joy itself must come to man Temper'd with pain; beauty, the more intense, The Keener, thrills us with the pleasure-pang. Music and love, ay, holiness itself, Hold pain for ever in their essence bound. From first to last no hope and no escape! Yet could I bear it, were the throes assign'd In equal measure to each human soul. But 'tis not thus; on one the woes are heap'd, While others pass with strange immunity From all save that engrain'd in very living. It is a grand injustice of the Lord In whom, alike, all move and have their being. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Autobiographical poetry from one of Kentucky’s rising Affrilachian literary stars. Bernard Clay’s autobiographical poetry debut, English Lit, juxtaposes the roots of Black male identity against an urban and rural Kentucky landscape. Hailed as one of the most authentic voices of his generation, Clay artfully renders coming-of-age in the predominately Black West End of Louisville, Kentucky. Balancing the spirited grit of a farmer and the careful lyricism of a poet, English Lit is a triumph of new Affrilachian—African American and Appalachian—literature.

Book excerpt: From Terra Nullius to Land of Opportunities and Last Frontier, the European dream has constructed and deconstructed Australia to feed its imagination of new societies. At the same time Australia has over the last two centuries forged and re-invented its own liaisons with Europe arguably to carve out its identity. From the arts to social sciences, to society itself, a complex dynamic has grown between the two continents in ways that invite study and discussion. A transnational research group has begun its collective investigation project of which this first volume is the outcome. The book is a substantial multidisciplinary collection of current research and offers critical perspectives on culture, literature and history around themes at the heart of the Imagined Australia project. The essays instigate reflection, discovery and discussion of how reciprocal imagining between Australia and Europe has articulated itself and ways and dimensions in which a relationship between communities, imagined and not, has unfolded.

Book Colonial Australian Women Poets

Download or read book Colonial Australian Women Poets written by Katie Hansord and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book traces the significant poetic and political contributions made by non-canonical women poets, situating women's poetry both in colonial Australian print culture and in wider imperial and transnational contexts. Women poets in colonial Australia have tended to be represented as marginal and isolated figures or absent. This study intervenes by demonstrating an alternative networked tradition of transnational feminist poetics and politics beyond and around emergent masculine nationalism, particularly within newspapers and periodical print culture. Without the inclusion of periodical literature, women’s poetry in Australia during the colonial period would appear to have been fairly limited. When periodical literature is taken into account, this picture is radically altered, and poets emerge as consistent contributors, often across a variety of newspapers and journals, who were well-known, influential and connected with political figures and literary circles. In examining this poetry in the original context of the newspapers and journals, the political intervention and the reception of that poetry is made much more apparent.

Book excerpt: Thirst, a collection of forty-three new poems from Pulitzer Prize-winner Mary Oliver, introduces two new directions in the poet's work. Grappling with grief at the death of her beloved partner of over forty years, she strives to experience sorrow as a path to spiritual progress, grief as part of loving and not its end. And within these pages she chronicles for the frst time her discovery of faith, without abandoning the love of the physical world that has been a hallmark of her work for four decades.
