Book excerpt: In this much anticipated follow-up to their groundbreaking book, Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom, authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates, together with co-author Katie Cunningham, extend the conversation in Shifting the Balance 3-5: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom. This new text is built in mind specifically for grades 3-5 teachers around best practices for the intermediate classroom. Shifting the Balance 3-5 introduces six more shifts across individual chapters that: Zoom in on a common (but not-as helpful-as-we-had-hoped) practice to reconsider Untangle a number of "misunderstandings" that have likely contributed to the use of the common practice Propose a more science-aligned shift to the current practice Provide solid scientific research to support the revised practice Offer a collection of high-leverage, easy-to-implement instructional routines to support the shift to more brain-friendly instruction The authors offer a refreshing approach that is respectful, accessible, and practical - grounded in an earnest commitment to building a bridge between research and classroom practice. As with the first Shifting the Balance, they aim to keep students at the forefront of reading instruction.

Book The Plain Truths of Religion

Download or read book The Plain Truths of Religion written by Gareth Wilson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-07 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion is a duplicitous invention of primitive humans, diametrically opposed to our moral intuition, and driven by belief in gods whose existence is neither evident nor probable. These are just some of the damning conclusions reached by Gareth Wilson within his pulsating assessment of organised faith. Sweeping aside the punditry of religious apologists and their critique of previous atheist works, The Plain Truths of Religion is the most extensive and full-blooded summation of both the nature and purpose of humankind's greatest belief systems. As such, this piece is as raw as it is incisive, and certainly not a read for the faint-hearted.

Book Agrifood Transitions in the Anthropocene

Download or read book Agrifood Transitions in the Anthropocene written by Allison M. Loconto and published by SAGE Publications Limited. This book was released on 2024-02-01 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The greatest challenges of the twenty-first century stem from the fact that we are now living in a new epoch: the Anthropocene. The human footprint on the planet can no longer be denied. One of the greatest and most essential human innovations, agriculture, is being increasingly recognised as a leading contributor to climate change. According to global governance bodies, the world will need to feed a predicted nine billion people by 2050. However, in this Anthropocene, we must address the environmental inequalities in how these people will be fed. This book explores our current societal struggles to transition towards more sustainable agrifood systems. It suggests that debates around sustainable agriculture must be social as well as technical, exploring the growth of social movements campaigning for more democratic food systems. However, as each chapter demonstrates, both the problems and the solutions in sustainable agriculture are highly contested. Using the term ′agrifood′ to capture the nexus between research, governance and the environment knowledge-environment-governance, this book provides an in-depth and wide-ranging account of current research around agricultural production and food consumption. The book introduces the Anthropocene along with the fundamental question that it poses about human-nature interactions. It outlines the core concerns related to agriculture and food and the debates around the need for agrifood system transitions. Each chapter investigates controversies in the field through case studies. These contributions offer a call for sociologists of agriculture and food to engage with the controversies unfolding in the Anthropocene.

Book The Case Against Man and Woman Screenplay

Download or read book The Case Against Man and Woman Screenplay written by Christopher Alan Anderson and published by First Edition Design Pub.. This book was released on 2014-10-09 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's original screenplay on the battle of ideas, the war of world views, and a philosophy on trial. What will be your verdict concerning The Case Against Man and Woman? ...we have never been able to touch the eternal for we have never understood that we can only touch it though each other. A man touches the eternal in a woman when he gives his life to her. That is what the sexual embrace is for a man--he is giving his whole life over to woman. A woman, in receiving that touch, unites with it and, in turn, gives her life to him in the next rebirth of life. You see, the great discovery of our times is that the procreant and the eternal are one. "Urge, urge, urge, always the procreant urge of the world," as Walt Whitman says in his Leaves of Grass. But let us not make the mistake of seeing this procreant process as only physical. It is metaphysical. It is happening right now. Feel it. Feel your other half with you right now. Touch him or her with your heart and never ever let them go. The challenge of our lives is to stand on this procreant love, now and forever. Keywords: Procreant, Balance. Love, Man, Woman, Two Forces, Eternal, Metaphysical, Philosophy, Sex
