Book Islam and the Baha i Faith

Download or read book Islam and the Baha i Faith written by Oliver Scharbrodt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-04-25 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Muhammad ‘Abduh (1849-1905) was one of the key thinkers and reformers of modern Islam who has influenced both liberal and fundamentalist Muslims today. ‘Abdul-Baha (1844-1921) was the son of Baha’ullah (1817-1892), the founder of the Baha’i Faith; a new religion which began as a messianic movement in Shii Islam, before it departed from Islam. Oliver Scharbrodt offers an innovative and radically new perspective on the lives of these two major religious reformers in 19th century Middle East by placing both figures into unfamiliar terrain. While one would classify ‘Abdul-Baha, leader of a messianic movement which claims to depart from Islam, as an exponent of heresy in Islam, ‘Abduh is perceived as an orthodox Sunni reformer. This book, however, argues against the assumption that both represent two extremely opposite expressions of Islamic religiosity. It shows that both were influenced by similar intellectual and religious traditions of Islam and that both participated in the same discussions on the reform of Islam in the 19th century. Islam and the Baha'i Faith provides new insights into the Islamic background of the Baha’i Faith and into ‘Abduh’s own association with so-called heretical movements in Islam.

Mr. Miller, who lived for years in Iran and fluent in Parsi, provides access to the westerner into events occurring during the early years of this world religion. The reader learns about the initial prophetic voices of the Bab and Baha'u'llah and the followers that founded the Bahai Faith after their deaths. The author explains the transformational shifts and unbelievable history of the Baha'is. Why did the early writings appear to be create a "society" or "philosophy" and later suddenly the community was touted as a "world religion"? Why are there are 7 Baha'i sects? Each exodus occurring when internal power struggles resulted in a few achieving greater control. Why do Baha'is work so hard to control their memberships contActs and reading material? Why do Baha'is shun those who leave, considering anyone not fully supportive of the Baha'i religion "spiritual poison?" After reading this book it should be clear to the reader. Due to the historical accuracy of the book's fActs and the author's position as a Protestant Missionary to an Islamic country, not all readers will be satisfied. Some will be offended those most likely the adherents who don't want the truth to come to light. Some will be offended because the author was a Protestant Missionary. Nevertheless, any serious student of world religions will be grateful to have his contributions on record to the history of the Baha'is.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Account of the Bahai Movement Holy Land: for have not its valleys and hills been trodden from the beginning by the feet of those great Messengers inspired of God - Abraham, Elijah, and last and greatest, Jesus of Nazareth? Is it strange that once more in this century of ours, in this the cradle of the race, ' those that were sitting in darkness have seen a Great Light, the light of the Sun of Righteousness that rises with healing in his wings? This great teacher, Abdul Baha - by birth a Persian - was, until 1908, for forty years a prisoner, confined by the order of the Turkish Government within the walls of Akka (or Acre, to use the name more familiar to the West) on account of his religious teachings, which were considered subversive of, and antagonistic to the faith of Islam. In order to make these statements intelligible to those who have not before heard of this great religious movement which is flooding the East with new light and life, it will be necessary to give a slight sketch of its history. In 1819 a.d., in the city of Shiraz, in Persia, a child was born named Mirza Ali Mohammad. His Father a wool merchant died while the child was yet an infant; he was brought up by his maternal uncle, and given the ordinary edu cation of a Persian youth in his position. Fromchildhood Ali Mohammad was renowned for his piety and virtue, his courteous manner, and the. Beauty of his person. When this young man attained the age of twenty-four, he announced to some of the princi pal men of learning and virtue of his country that he was the bearer of a message from God, and from that time assumed the title of Bab, or door, by which name he became generally known. He is now universally referred to as the Bab. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The Dialectics of the Religious and the Secular: Studies on the Future of Religion contains the work of fifteen international scholars who have wrestled with the question of the relevancy, meaning, and future of religion within the context of the increasing antagonisms between the religious and secular realms of modern civil society and its globalization. Through their chosen topics in analyzing these issues in the 20th and 21st centuries, each author also indicates the possibility of mitigating if not preventing the continuation of this antagonism by historically moving toward a more reconciled and humane future global society. Book The Universal Principles of the Reform Bahai Faith

Download or read book The Universal Principles of the Reform Bahai Faith written by Baha'u'llah and published by Reform Bahai Press. This book was released on 2007-12 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Universal Principles of the Reform Bahai Faith collects many of the early writings of Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha, published in the West, seeking to restore and preserve their vision of the oneness of God, humanity, and all religions. In addition to all of the 1912 Universal Principles of the Bahai Movement, the book includes Baha'u'llah's Hidden Words, selections known as the Spirit of the Age, an address by Abdu'l-Baha at the Friends' Meeting House in London in 1913, and many Bahai prayers for community and individual worship and meditation. Though beginning in 2004, the Reform Bahai Faith traces its origin to the early Bahais Ruth White, Mirza Ahmad Sohrab, and Julie Chanler, who sought to preserve the Teachings of Abdu'l-Baha after his passing in 1921. They and other early American Bahais understood the Bahai Faith was being turned into an oppressive organization, under what the British Museum document expert Dr. C. Ainsworth Mitchell judged to be a fraudulent will and testament. Baha'u'llah, the Founder of the Bahai Faith, believed in and taught a moderate, universal religion, grounded in a separation of church and state, not a theocracy, and members of the Reform Bahai Faith seek to recover and renew that saving vision for all humanity. The newcomer to the Bahai Teachings will find here a brief but eloquent and inspiring introduction to the Faith of Baha'u'llah, while people already familiar with it will find a refreshing breeze has returned to revivify and uplift the spirit. This book marks the first publication of the Reform Bahai Press, which will publish several more titles during the next few years.
