Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 4: January to June, 1897 It is seldom one finds such roe shooting as in the circum stances we have sketched, but the roe is always a great addition to the battue in the North. A chartered denizen of the wastes and woods, he seeks the deepest solitudes of extensive plantations. Hence he is scarcely the ornament of the landscape he ought to be, for he rarely shows. Strolling quietly about with the gun in the woodland glades, you may occasionally catch the gleam of a white stern vanishing behind a tree trunk. Few creatures are more graceful, and very few more destructive. The roe steals out to feed at night or in the early morning, and there is no prettier sight, except to the unfortunate farmer, than a family party in the high green corn, delicately nibbling the tender blades. Somehow they are less shy in Germany, where you may see them any day of an afternoon grazing with the cattle in the sequestered valleys surrounded by woods. With us, when they keep themselves to themselves in their sylvan retreats, they make frightful havoc of the young saplings. That is the best antidote to sentimentalism with the tender-hearted shooter who is greatly inclined to spare them for their beauty, and feels remorseful when he plunges the hunting-knife in the quivering chest. Nothing keeps one up to the mark at a Scottish battue like the expectation of roe. Instinctive timidity has bred intense suspicion. The sight is as keen as the sense of smell. The. Excerpt: ...stranger, playing for the first time at Eton, who has been accustomed to a good light, would find himself equally puzzled by the close proximity of the trees, and very apt to lose sight of the ball after it has left the bowler's hand; whilst in the late afternoon, when the sun is going down, the shadows cast by the trees are very baulking to those unaccustomed to them. Moreover, as a rule, the wickets are much deader and slower than at Harrow; so that really each school would have, as is usually the case on its own ground, a decided advantage to start with. It has also been said that the removal of the match from Lord's would seriously impoverish the M.C.C. coffers. This reads like a joke, and was probably intended for one. If really meant, the propounder of such a statement must have been ignorant of the resources of the M.C.C., which is probably one of the richest sporting clubs in the world, and if necessary would be able to recoup itself in many ways for the loss of the school profits; though the question of money-making in connection with the University and School matches is such a repugnant idea that it should not be entertained for a moment. The county clubs, of course, have to consider the question of s. d., and a good match extending to a third day means a welcome addition to their funds; but M.C.C., with its four thousand members and an unlimited candidate list, can well afford to be above all mercenary considerations. At the same time, the removal from Lord's would be a great upsetting of all the old traditions under which the match has hitherto been played, and there are many who feel that they would not like to see it, except on the old ground which has been consecrated by immemorial custom, though at the same...

This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 3: July to December, 1896 Yes, I had as good a right to my life as even my arch-enemy the hansom, or my treacherous companion the butcher's cart. I and my machine were no longer like a masterless dog, and, if we were scouted from the pavement, at least we would take modestly but firmly, if need be, our proper breathing room in the road. From this moment my attitude towards hansoms was, in the classic words of Punch, ' 'also schnapp ich meine finger in deinem face.' Cautious and alert, I merrily proceeded on my way, using my bicycle as a means of doing my morning shopping or other business. I found that my experience in driving an exceedingly naughty pony in a cart in town stood me here in very good stead, my eye being fairly educated to pace and distance; and soon I learnt to judge of the breadth of my handle-bars almost to an inch, and of the habits and probable proceedings of the various vehicles by which I was surrounded, with nothing, apparently, but my wits and nerve between me and destruction. Drivers of hansoms have various ways of inflicting torture on a fellow-creature, one of which is suddenly and loudly to shout out Hi when they have ample room to pass, or when you are only occupying your lawful position in a string of vehicles. Also, they love to shave your handle-bars and wheels, passing so close that if you swerve in the slightest - which, if you are possessed of nerves, you are too likely to do - it must bring you to serious grief. They are also very fond of cutting in just in front of you, or deliberately checking you at a crossing, well knowing that by so doing they risk your life, or, at any rate, force you to get off. I myself always ride peaceably about seven or eight miles an hour, and keep a good look-out some way ahead, as by that means you can often slip through a tight-place or avoid being made into a sandwich composed of, let us say, a pedestrian who will not, and an omnibus which cannot, stop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 14: January to June 1902 What is the charm of motor-cars? It is not to be wondered at that those who are unacquainted with them detest them. Until some six or seven years ago I was among the number of horse-owners who regard the new method of transit as a noisy nuisance, and although I am still alive to the drawbacks attending the introduction of something entirely new in so old-fashioned a country as ours, the continued use of many types of motor-cars has quite revolutionised my feelings on the matter. Excerpt: ...that suggested that Amazon had sought sanctuary in the cowhouse. I have done some roughing it in my time, and I am not over-particular, but I admit that it was rather a shock to meet the turkey itself again, more especially as it was the sole item of the menu. There was no doubt of its identity, as it was short of a leg, and half the breast had been shaved away. The aunt must have read my thoughts in my face. She fixed her small implacable eyes on mine for one quelling instant, then she looked at Robert. Her nephew was obviously afraid to meet her eye; he coughed uneasily, and handed a surreptitious potato to the puppy who was sitting under his chair. 'This place is rotten with dogs, ' said the aunt; with which announcement she retired from the conversation, and fell again to the slaughter of the parlour-maid. I timidly ate my portion of turkey and tried not to think about the cowhouse. It rained all night. I could hear the water hammering into something that rang like a gong; and each time I rolled over in the musty trough of my feather-bed I fractiously asked myself why the mischief they had left the tap running all night. Next morning the matter was explained when, on demanding a bath, I was told that ' there wasn't but one in the house, and 'twas undher the rain-down. But sure ye can have it, ' with which it was dragged in full of dirty water and flakes of whitewash, and when I got out of it I felt as if I had been through the Bankruptcy Court. The day was windy and misty--a combination of weather possible only in Ireland--but there was no snow, and Robert Trinder, seated at breakfast in a purple-red hunting coat, dingy drab breeches, and woollen socks, assured me that it was turning out a grand morning. I distinctly liked the looks of...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 13: July to December, 1901 Bill Means had wilted right there, and after that we none of us wondered that jimmy Murray should look so pleased over the prospect of bringing the branding job to an end as soon as Charley and the boys fetched up the last lot of steers. Tall, gaunt, long-horned brutes the Strong and Starbuck steers were, bred in the thickets of the Nueces and the Palo Verde. They had been wild as hawks when they first started, but the long journey had tamed those wild hearts of theirs a little, and a horseman could drive them now readily enough anywhere on the open prairie; yet the inside of a corral was strange and alarming to them still some of them had never seen the inside of a corral but once before in their lives, when they were run in from the brush to endure the branding-iron and the knife before starting over the trail.
