Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 10: January to June 1900 Sounds followed that suggested the intemperate use of Mr. Freddy Alexander's pocket-handkerchief, but that were, in effect, produced by his struggle with a brand new hunting horn. To this demonstration about as much attention was paid by the nine couple of buccaneers whom he was now exercising for the first time as might have been expected, and it was brought to an abrupt conclusion by the sudden charge of two of them from the rear. Being coupled, they mowed his legs from under him as irresistibly as chain shot, and being puppies, and of an imbecile friendliness, they remained to lick his face and gene rally make merry Over him as he struggled to his feet. This book was released on 2017-05-16 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 13: July to December, 1901 Bill Means had wilted right there, and after that we none of us wondered that jimmy Murray should look so pleased over the prospect of bringing the branding job to an end as soon as Charley and the boys fetched up the last lot of steers. Tall, gaunt, long-horned brutes the Strong and Starbuck steers were, bred in the thickets of the Nueces and the Palo Verde. They had been wild as hawks when they first started, but the long journey had tamed those wild hearts of theirs a little, and a horseman could drive them now readily enough anywhere on the open prairie; yet the inside of a corral was strange and alarming to them still some of them had never seen the inside of a corral but once before in their lives, when they were run in from the brush to endure the branding-iron and the knife before starting over the trail. This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 756 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 3: July to December, 1896 Yes, I had as good a right to my life as even my arch-enemy the hansom, or my treacherous companion the butcher's cart. I and my machine were no longer like a masterless dog, and, if we were scouted from the pavement, at least we would take modestly but firmly, if need be, our proper breathing room in the road. From this moment my attitude towards hansoms was, in the classic words of Punch, ' 'also schnapp ich meine finger in deinem face.' Cautious and alert, I merrily proceeded on my way, using my bicycle as a means of doing my morning shopping or other business. I found that my experience in driving an exceedingly naughty pony in a cart in town stood me here in very good stead, my eye being fairly educated to pace and distance; and soon I learnt to judge of the breadth of my handle-bars almost to an inch, and of the habits and probable proceedings of the various vehicles by which I was surrounded, with nothing, apparently, but my wits and nerve between me and destruction. Drivers of hansoms have various ways of inflicting torture on a fellow-creature, one of which is suddenly and loudly to shout out Hi when they have ample room to pass, or when you are only occupying your lawful position in a string of vehicles. Also, they love to shave your handle-bars and wheels, passing so close that if you swerve in the slightest - which, if you are possessed of nerves, you are too likely to do - it must bring you to serious grief. They are also very fond of cutting in just in front of you, or deliberately checking you at a crossing, well knowing that by so doing they risk your life, or, at any rate, force you to get off. I myself always ride peaceably about seven or eight miles an hour, and keep a good look-out some way ahead, as by that means you can often slip through a tight-place or avoid being made into a sandwich composed of, let us say, a pedestrian who will not, and an omnibus which cannot, stop. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Badminton Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, Vol. 6: January to June 1898 By the time they were ready to start again, it became known that the mules had both fallen lame, and there was nothing for it but to stable them under a ledge of rock, and to push on as well as they could, each man with an extra load.
