Book excerpt: Something stalks Owenton Hollow...in rural Kentucky during certain summers known as the bad season. Locals bury their dead and keep the events secret so the media will avoid Owenton County, which had become a prime marijuana source. By 1995, several outsiders had built houses near the hollow, and the DEA began enforcing drug laws in Owenton County. None were aware of the danger they faced. Based on fact and myth, this is an account of what happened when a misfit squad of strangers led by a Marine Vietnam veteran faced the impossible...an enemy that could not die.

Book A Series of Unfortunate Events 01 The Bad Beginning

Download or read book A Series of Unfortunate Events 01 The Bad Beginning written by Lemony Snicket and published by Egmont Books (UK). This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is nothing to be found in the pages of A Series of Unfortunate Events but misery and despair. You still have time to choose another international best-seller to read. But if you must know what unpleasantries befall the charming and clever Baudelaire children read on . . . In The Bad Beginning the three youngsters encounter a greedy and repulsive villain, itchy clothing, a disastrous fire, a plot to steal their fortune and cold porridge for breakfast. Then again, why trouble yourself with the unfortunate resolutions? With 5 million copies sold in the UK alone, one might consider Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events to make him one of the most successful children’s authors of the past decade. We, however, consider these miserable so-called adventure stories and the Hollywood film starring Jim Carrey that accompanied the books for children as nothing more than a dreadful mistake.

Book The Bad Guys Won

Download or read book The Bad Guys Won written by Jeff Pearlman and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jeff Pearlman has captured the swagger of the '86 Mets. You don't have to be a Mets fan to enjoy this book—it's a great read for all baseball enthusiasts." —Philadelphia Daily News Award-winning Sports Illustrated baseball writer Jeff Pearlman returns to an innocent time when a city worshipped a man named Mookie and the Yankees were the second-best team in New York. It was 1986, and the New York Mets won 108 regular-season games and the World Series, capturing the hearts (and other assorted body parts) of fans everywhere. But their greatness on the field was nearly eclipsed by how bad they were off it. Led by the indomitable Keith Hernandez and the young dynamic duo of Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry, along with the gallant Scum Bunch, the Amazin’s left a wide trail of wreckage in their wake—hotel rooms, charter planes, a bar in Houston, and most famously Bill Buckner and the hated Boston Red Sox. With an unforgettable cast of characters—including Doc, Straw, the Kid, Nails, Mex, and manager Davey Johnson—this “affectionate but critical look at this exciting season” (Publishers Weekly) celebrates the last of baseball’s arrogant, insane, rock-and-roll-and-party-all-night teams, exploring what could have been, what should have been, and what never was.

Book A Season in Hell

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arthur Rimbaud
  • Publisher : BookRix
  • Release : 2019-06-15
  • ISBN : 3736819250
  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book A Season in Hell written by Arthur Rimbaud and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Season in Hell is an extended poem written and published by French writer Arthur Rimbaud. The book had a considerable influence on later artists and poets, for example the Surrealists. Henry Miller was important in introducing Rimbaud to America in the sixties. He once attempted an English translation of the book and wrote an extended essay on Rimbaud and A Season in Hell titled The Time of the Assassins. The poem is loosely divided into nine parts, some of which are much shorter than others. They differ markedly in tone and narrative comprehensibility, with some, such as "Bad Blood," 'being much more obviously influenced by Rimbaud's drug use than others, some argue. Academic critics have arrived at many varied and often entirely incompatible conclusions as to what meaning and philosophy may or may not be contained in the text, and will continue to do so.
