Book excerpt: Catharine Parr Traill, nee Strickland (1802-1899) was a British author who wrote about life as a settler in Canada. Traill began writing children's books in 1818. She described her new life in Canada in letters and journals, and collected these into The Backwoods of Canada (1836), which continues to be read as an important source of information about early Canada. More observations were included in a novel, Canadian Crusoes (1851) which was retitled Lost in the Backwoods. She also published The Female Emigrant's Guide (1854), later retitled The Canadian Settler's Guide, about the ability of emigrants to settle down in a new place. Catharine spent her years in Belleville writing about the natural environment. She often sketched the plant life of Upper Canada, publishing Canadian Wild Flowers (1865) and Studies of Plant Life in Canada (1885).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Backwoods of Canada is a collection of personal letters written by Catharine Parr Traill and published in 1836. The book was intended to equip other women immigrants with a realistic view of what life was like on the wilderness frontier of Canada as well as insight into the skills and strength needed to survive. Following her marriage to Thomas Traill, a retired British Lieutenant who served in the Napoleonic Wars, the couple emigrated to Canada and settled in the backwoods near what is now Peterborough, Ontario. Catharine was a prolific writer, having authored her first book at the age of 16. Following the publication of this book, she went on to produce Canadian Crusoes (1851) and The Female Emigrant's Guide (1854) with which she shared more antidotes of daily frontier life as well as a more thorough collection of requisite domestic skills. Traill was also an avid naturalist, producing multiple volumes on Canadian flora and fauna. This book offers an excellent glimpse into frontier life as it had existed relatively unchanged for many decades. It is especially unique in that it provides that glimpse from a female perspective.

Book excerpt: In Mixed Company explores taverns as colonial public space and how men and women of diverse backgrounds Native and newcomer, privileged and labouring, white and non-white negotiated a place for themselves within them. The stories that emerge unsettle comfortable certainties about who belonged where in colonial society. Colonial taverns were places where labourers enjoyed libations with wealthy Aboriginal traders like Captain Thomas, who also treated a Scotsman to a small bowl of punch; where white soldiers rubbed shoulders with black colonists out to celebrate Emancipation Day; where English ladies and their small children sought refuge for a night. The records of the past tell stories of time spent in mixed company but also of the myriad, unequal ways that colonists found room in taverns and a place in Upper Canadian culture and society. Reconstructed from tavern-keepers' accounts, court records, diaries, travelogues, and letters, In Mixed Company is essential reading for tavern aficionados and anyone interested in the history of gender, race, and culture in Canadian or colonial society.
