Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most eligible billionaire bachelor is looking for a wife . . . When my father locked down my trust fund until I found a wife, my brother thought it would be funny to add my profile to a new matchmaking app that caused me nothing but headaches and frustration. Romance gave me hives and I had every reason NOT to believe in love, but as a billionaire, and the city’s most eligible bachelor that every woman wanted, I’d now become the face of ForeverLuv. Yes, a frenzy ensued, and I had no time or patience for the insanity. Deleting my profile proved impossible, so I paid a visit to the woman who owned the business and demanded she remove me. I didn’t expect her to stand up to me and flat-out refuse . . . I was a man used to snapping his fingers and people jumping to obey, but this vixen didn’t budge—because I was the reason why her waning business was now thriving, and it wasn’t her fault that my idiot brother pulled the prank. So that’s when I struck a deal with the curvy, sexy matchmaker . . . find me a suitable, compatible wife in one week’s time so I could recover my trust fund, and I’d invest in her barely surviving software company. Fail to find me a bride to meet my standards, and she’d have to stand in as my back-up wife. I swore I’d never fall in love . . . but then again, I’d never met a woman like Felicity Wright. It only took me a string of disastrous dates to figure it out.
Download or read book Bringing Down the Temple House written by Marjorie Lehman and published by Brandeis University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-18 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A feminist project that privileges the Babylonian Talmudic tractate as culturally significant. While the use of feminist analysis as a methodological lens is not new to the study of Talmudic literature or to the study of individual tractates, this book demonstrates that such an intervention with the Babylonian Talmud reveals new perspectives on the rabbis’ relationship with the temple and its priesthood. More specifically, through the relationships most commonly associated with home, such as those of husband-wife, father-son, mother-son, and brother-brother, the rabbis destabilize the temple bayit (or temple house). Moving beyond the view that the temple was replaced by the rabbinic home, and that rabbinic rites reappropriate temple practices, a feminist approach highlights the inextricable link between kinship, gender, and the body, calling attention to the ways the rabbis deconstruct the priesthood so as to reconstruct themselves.

Download or read book The Memory of the Temple and the Making of the Rabbis written by Naftali S. Cohn and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the rabbis composed the Mishnah in the late second or early third century C.E., the Jerusalem Temple had been destroyed for more then a century. Why, then, do the Temple and its ritual feature so prominently in the Mishnah? Against the view that the rabbis were reacting directly to the destruction and asserting that nothing had changed, Naftali S. Cohn argues that the memory of the Temple served a political function for the rabbis in their own time. They described the Temple and its ritual in a unique way that helped to establish their authority within the context of Roman dominance. At the time the Mishnah was created, the rabbis were not the only ones talking extensively about the Temple: other Judaeans (including followers of Jesus), Christians, and even Roman emperors produced texts and other cultural artifacts centered on the Jerusalem Temple. Looking back at the procedures of Temple ritual, the rabbis created in the Mishnah a past and a Temple in their own image, which lent legitimacy to their claim to be the only authentic purveyors of Jewish tradition and the traditional Jewish way of life. Seizing on the Temple, they sought to establish and consolidate their own position of importance within the complex social and religious landscape of Jewish society in Roman Palestine.

Download or read book The Silk Weavers of Kyoto written by Tamara Hareven and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2003-01-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The makers of obi, the elegant and costly sash worn over kimono in Japan, belong to an endangered species. These families of manufacturers, weavers, and other craftspeople centered in the Nishijin weaving district of Kyoto have practiced their demanding craft for generations. In recent decades, however, as a result of declining markets for kimono, they find their livelihood and pride harder to sustain. This book is a poignant exploration of a vanishing world. Tamara Hareven integrates historical research with intensive life history interviews to reveal the relationships among family, work, and community in this highly specialized occupation. Hareven uses her knowledge of textile workers' lives in the United States and Western Europe to show how striking similarities in weavers' experiences transcend cultural differences. These very rich personal testimonies, taken over a decade and a half, provide insight into how these men and women have juggled family and work roles and coped with insecurities. Readers can learn firsthand how weavers perceive their craft and how they interpret their lives and view the world around them. With rare immediacy, The Silk Weavers of Kyoto captures a way of life that is rapidly disappearing.
