Book Outer Space and Popular Culture

Download or read book Outer Space and Popular Culture written by Annette Froehlich and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides detailed insights into how space and popular culture intersect across a broad spectrum of examples, including cinema, music, art, arcade games, cartoons, comics, and advertisements. This is a pertinent topic since the use of space themes differs in different cultural contexts, and these themes can be used to explore various aspects of the human condition and provide a context for social commentary on politically sensitive issues. With the use of space imagery evolving over the past sixty years of the space age, this is a topic ripe for in-depth exploration. The book also discusses the contrasting visions of space from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the reality of today, and analyzes space vehicles and habitats in popular depictions of space from an engineering perspective, exploring how many of those ideas have actually been implemented in practice, and why or why not (a case of life imitating art and vice versa). As such, it covers a wide array of relevant and timely topics examining intersections between space and popular culture, and offering accounts of space and its effect on culture, language, and storytelling from the southern regions of the world.

I feel duty bound to inform you that, in this case, you would be mistaken, for our baboon has suffered a most intimate and injurious injustice - his right testicle has been wrenched from its furry pouch by a person, or persons, unknown in order to fulfil a long held prophesy and set afoot plans for world domination. And herein lies the confusion in our tale - does the offending scrotal raider have the right one for the job or is it the wrong one, being the right one? Set alongside this an unlikely group of misfits - including some completely oblivious newly-weds, a 200 year old, dead, gay, unidextrous pie maker and his curious short arsed lover by the name of Gerard O'nad, a murderous army of Welsh zombies and an all stitching, all dancing counter-army of equally murderous Pearly Kings and Queens and you have an almighty pile of baboon excrement - but an equally almighty 'bloody good read!'

Book The Damby Tradition of the Kono People of Sierra Leone West Africa

This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Damby concept is very similar to the concept of DNA: protein chains from where every human or every living creature gets its hereditary traits. The earth was originally farmland created for a family. Animals that inhabited the air; water and earth were venerated by all cultures in the ancient world and viewed as symbols of the invisible forces; through whom he worships the Divine Power for the creative impulses of the gods readily respond to them. All cultures of the world reverent some animals as symbolism of divinity. The the forms and habits of these emblematic creatures : the media of existence closely relate them to the various generative and germinative powers of Nature thus, were viewed as evidence of Omnipresence. The Kono understood that all life has its origin in water. Therefore, he chose the fish as the symbol of the life germ. This fish as his emblem of the life germ is called Sa-neh (eel); meaning Sa, the ancient God is here. Furthermore, he went a step further and chose other kinds of animals to represent the divine for each - original founding fathers of the Kono Tribe. These animals and plants became known :Tana of the male heads of each founding family . However, the basic reasons behind such choices were based on a simple belief that each Damby head was a product of his Damby : his Tana or Totemic Animal. Therefore, the totemic animals were depicted as deities; and each family was prohibited from eating his or her totemic animal or food. At first, twelve animals and other forms of food were chosen and each family member had its own animal or other food form as the family's Tana. The animals and their explanations are giving in the book.

Book The Dawning Moon of the Mind

Download or read book The Dawning Moon of the Mind written by Susan Brind Morrow and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A stunning and original interpretation of an ancient system of poetic, religious, and philosophical thought Buried in the Egyptian desert some four thousand years ago, the Pyramid Texts are among the world’s oldest poetry. Yet ever since the discovery of these hieroglyphs in 1881, they have been misconstrued by Western Egyptologists as a garbled collection of primitive myths and incantations, relegating to obscurity their radiant fusion of philosophy, scientific inquiry, and religion. Now, in a seminal work, the classicist and linguist Susan Brind Morrow has recast the Pyramid Texts as a coherent work of art, arguing that they should be recognized as a formative event in the evolution of human thought. In The Dawning Moon of the Mind she explains how to read hieroglyphs, contextualizes their evocative imagery, and interprets the entire poem. The result is a magisterial religious and philosophical text revealing a profound consciousness of the world with astonishing parallels to Judeo-Christian culture, Buddhism, and Tantra. More than twenty years in the making, The Dawning Moon of the Mind is a monumental achievement that locates one of the origins of poetic thought in Western culture. Almost before science, art, and written language, these texts set forth the relationship between time and eternity, life and death, history and ideas. In The Dawning Moon of the Mindthey emerge in their original luminosity and intelligence alongside a persuasive argument for their central importance to the history of language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey, Robert Sapolsky, a foremost science writer and recipient of a MacArthur Genius Grant, tells the mesmerizing story of his twenty-one years in remote Kenya with a troop of savanna baboons. "I had never planned to become a savanna baboon when I grew up; instead, I had always assumed I would become a mountain gorilla,” writes Robert Sapolsky in this witty and riveting chronicle of a scientist’s coming-of-age in Africa. An exhilarating account of Sapolsky’s twenty-one-year study of a troop of rambunctious baboons in Kenya, A Primate’s Memoir interweaves serious scientific observations with wry commentary about the challenges and pleasures of living in the wilds of the Serengeti—for man and beast alike. Over two decades, Sapolsky survives culinary atrocities, gunpoint encounters, and a surreal kidnapping, while witnessing the encroachment of the tourist mentality on Africa. As he conducts unprecedented physiological research on wild primates, he becomes enamored of his subjects—unique and compelling characters in their own right—and he returns to them summer after summer, until tragedy finally prevents him. By turns hilarious and poignant, A Primate’s Memoir is a magnum opus from one of our foremost science writers.
