Book The B G System of Evaluating Forecasts

Download or read book The B G System of Evaluating Forecasts written by Irving I. Gringorten and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To score a forecast of an event, like the noontime temperature at a city airport, a system has been proposed that would measure the improvement of the forecast over simple climatic information. If the climatic probability of the forecast (F) is PF, and that of the observed event (V) is PV, then the assigned score (sFV) becomes sFV = -ln(1 - P1)P2 - 1, where P1 = min(PF, PV) and P2 = max(PF, PV). A test of the forecaster's skill, however, requires a large set of forecasts and corresponding verifications.

Book Assessment of Intraseasonal to Interannual Climate Prediction and Predictability

Download or read book Assessment of Intraseasonal to Interannual Climate Prediction and Predictability written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-08 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More accurate forecasts of climate conditions over time periods of weeks to a few years could help people plan agricultural activities, mitigate drought, and manage energy resources, amongst other activities; however, current forecast systems have limited ability on these time- scales. Models for such climate forecasts must take into account complex interactions among the ocean, atmosphere, and land surface. Such processes can be difficult to represent realistically. To improve the quality of forecasts, this book makes recommendations about the development of the tools used in forecasting and about specific research goals for improving understanding of sources of predictability. To improve the accessibility of these forecasts to decision-makers and researchers, this book also suggests best practices to improve how forecasts are made and disseminated.

Book Performance Evaluation of Computer and Communication Systems

Download or read book Performance Evaluation of Computer and Communication Systems written by Jean-Yves Le Boudec and published by EPFL Press. This book was released on 2010-10-13 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance evaluation is a critical stage of software- and hardware-system development that every computer engineer and scientist should master. Although complex Рrequiring skills in mathematics, measurement techniques and simulation Рperformance evaluation is primarily an art; indeed, the most difficult stage in a performance analysis is defining the approach: once you know what to do, it is less difficult to define a plan of attack with your familiar software tools. We present a set of topics, which we believe should be part of every engineer's intellectual toolkit. This includes the statistical exploitation of numerical results in an efficient and ethical way, for example: how to summarize variability or fairness; what transient removal in a simulation is; and how to make predictions from a time series. We also present well-known performance patterns, which helps to quickly bring the engineer to the main issues. For queuing theory, we focus on a subset of very useful results, such as operational laws. A highlight of the book is the development of Palm calculus, also called “the importance of the viewpoint,” which is central to queuing theory. Indeed, this topic has so many applications to simulation and to system analysis in general that it is a very good time investment. This book began as a set of lecture notes for a course given at EPFL.

Download or read book Shop Floor Control Systems written by A. Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been a tremendous upsurge of interest in manufac turing systems design and analysis. Large industrial companies have realized that their manufacturing facilities can be a source of tremendous opportunity if managed well or a huge corporate liability if managed poorly. In particular industrial managers have realized the potential of well designed and installed production planning and control systems. Manufacturing, in an environment of short product life cycles and increasing product diversity, looks to tech niques such as manufacturing resource planning, Just In Time (lIT) and total quality control among others to meet the challenge. Customers are demanding high quality products and very fast turn around on orders. Manufacturing personnel are aware of the lead time from receipt of order to delivery of completed orders at the customer's premises. It is clear that this production lead time is, for the majority of manufacturing firms, greatly in excess of the actual processing or manufacturing time. There are many reasons for this, among them poor coordination between the sales and manufacturing function. Some are within the control of the manufacturing function. Others are not.

Book excerpt: This book reports the proceedings of WIRN09, the 19th Italian Workshop of the Italian Society for Neural Networks (SIREN). Neural networks explore thought mechanisms that efficient computational tools and a representative physics of our brain share together and that ultimately produce the loops of our thoughts. The general approach is to see how these loops run and which tracks they leave.

Book Statistical Approaches for Landslide Susceptibility Assessment and Prediction

Download or read book Statistical Approaches for Landslide Susceptibility Assessment and Prediction written by Sujit Mandal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the spatial distribution of landslide hazards of the Darjeeling Himalayas. Knowledge driven methods and statistical techniques such as frequency ratio model (FRM), information value model (IVM), logistic regression model (LRM), index overlay model (IOM), certainty factor model (CFM), analytical hierarchy process (AHP), artificial neural network model (ANN), and fuzzy logic have been adopted to identify landslide susceptibility. In addition, a comparison between various statistical models were made using success rate cure (SRC) and it was found that artificial neural network model (ANN), certainty factor model (CFM) and frequency ratio based fuzzy logic approach are the most reliable statistical techniques in the assessment and prediction of landslide susceptibility in the Darjeeling Himalayas. The study identified very high, high, moderate, low and very low landslide susceptibility locations to take site-specific management options as well as to ensure developmental activities in theDarjeeling Himalayas. Particular attention is given to the assessment of various geomorphic, geotectonic and geohydrologic attributes that help to understand the role of different factors and corresponding classes in landslides, to apply different models, and to monitor and predict landslides. The use of various statistical and physical models to estimate landslide susceptibility is also discussed. The causes, mechanisms and types of landslides and their destructive character are elaborated in the book. Researchers interested in applying statistical tools for hazard zonation purposes will find the book appealing.
