Book A Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World

Download or read book A Complete Checklist of the Birds of the World written by Richard Howard and published by Oxford ; Toronto : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a complete revision of the authors' previous authoritative work. It incorporates all the significant changes to bird taxonomy that have occurred over the past six years and remains the only single-volume work to list subspecies. Ornithologists are constantly reviewing and revising the scientific and common names of the world's birds--combining and dividing established species and genera. Despite the fact that opinions will continue to vary on the details of avian classification, lists such as this provide a baseline reference to scientific and English names, taxonomy, and distribution for both the professional and amateur ornithologist and taxonomist. In the next decade, new studies using advanced groupings may establish new systematic groupings. The current list, by adding to and amending the classic listing of Peters and his successors, may well be the last and most finely developed list in the traditional mold and, therefore, a prime reference for years to come. Key Features * The most up to date list of the world's birds * Covers their distribution using traditional taxonomy * The only single-volume reference to include subspecies * Lists approximately 9,200 species and their subspecies * Thoroughly revised and updated

Book Compact Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan

Download or read book Compact Handbook of the Birds of India and Pakistan written by Sálim Ali and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 841 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1200 species of birds, in 20 Orders and numerous Families, are known to occur in the Indian subcontinent. This Handbook describes the 1200 species by distribution, habits, breeding biology, diet, voice, and other features. Over 100 plates and systematic keys in the text aid identification.Maps show the distribution of many migratory and spatially restricted forms, and a number of line drawings illustrate diagnostic features such as bills and feet. This new Compact edition brings together the text of all ten volumes of the original Handbook, with 106 plates by the famous American bird painter John Henry Dick depicting all the bird species found in that region. The text and black-and-white text illustrations of the Handbook appear here photographically reduced by 30%, with four pages of the original occupying one page of the Compact Edition. They remain legible to the normal eye, however. The colour plates appear in the same size as in the originaleditions.

Book The Audacious Raconteur

Download or read book The Audacious Raconteur written by Leela Prasad and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can a subject be sovereign in a hegemony? Can creativity be reined in by forces of empire? Studying closely the oral narrations and writings of four Indian authors in colonial India, The Audacious Raconteur argues that even the most hegemonic circumstances cannot suppress "audacious raconteurs": skilled storytellers who fashion narrative spaces that allow themselves to remain sovereign and beyond subjugation. By drawing attention to the vigorous orality, maverick use of photography, literary ventriloquism, and bilingualism in the narratives of these raconteurs, Leela Prasad shows how the ideological bulwark of colonialism—formed by concepts of colonial modernity, history, science, and native knowledge—is dismantled. Audacious raconteurs wrest back meanings of religion, culture, and history that are closer to their lived understandings. The figure of the audacious raconteur does not only hover in an archive but suffuses everyday life. Underlying these ideas, Prasad's personal interactions with the narrators' descendants give weight to her innovative argument that the audacious raconteur is a necessary ethical and artistic figure in human experience. Thanks to generous funding from Duke University, the ebook editions of this book are available as Open Access volumes from Cornell Open (cornellpress.cornell.edu/cornell-open) and other repositories.
