Book The City Different and the Palace

Download or read book The City Different and the Palace written by Rosemary Nusbaum and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year was 1909, and a youthful Jesse Nusbaum had resigned his teaching position at the Normal School at Las Vegas, New Mexico, and had ridden his “...four-horse-power, twin-cylinder, chain-belt-driven, two-speed Excelsior motorcycle over the rough and rocky Santa Fe Trail route, to enter on July 1 at the Old Palace of the Governors.” He was the first employee of the newly-formed Museum of New Mexico and School of American Archaeology. From that day, Jesse Nusbaum’s life was inextricably bound to Santa Fe: it was he who undertook the remodeling of the Palace of the Governors into a museum; from 1909-1913, it was he who supervised the razing of the old Army barracks at the corner of Palace and Lincoln Avenue I 1916 and also supervised the construction of the Fine Arts Museum on that site; and he was one of the organizers of the Laboratory of Anthropology, Inc., and was its first director when the doors opened in 1930. Additionally, Jesse was one of the foremost Southwestern archeologists, and he was a first-rank photographer, as many of the illustrations in this volume (although reproduced here from less than excellent sources) will attest. For all his other accomplishments, however, Jesse Nusbaum is most closely associated with the Palace of the Governors. In this book, dedicated in memory of her husband, Rosemary Nusbaum has delineated the history of the “Old Palace.” Much has been written elsewhere about that historic structure, but only in this volume can the insight and experiences of Jesse Nusbaum be found. ROSEMARY L. NUSBAUM was born in Marquette, Michigan and graduated from the Baraga High School in that city. In 1929, she received the R.N. degree from the University Hospital in Chicago, Illinois and then worked as a Medical Pathologist for the Eight Corps Area of the Army stationed at Bruns General Hospital in Santa Fe in World War II. She studied sculpture with Eugenie Shonnard and ceramics with Warren Gilbertson in Santa Fe. She was also the author of numerous short stories and poems which appeared in many well-known publications. Ernest Thompson Seton said of her: “She possesses the virtue of intelligence.”

Book excerpt: Earth and Faerie are at war. Kind of. Possibly a cold war, except in the vicinity of Aelik, where it’s often too exciting for comfort. When an increase in odd, and horrific, incidents on Earth suggests the enemy have weaponised stories in their campaign to Make Faerie Fearsome Again, Aelik must navigate the toxic waters of political intrigue in search of a way to end the cold war, and prevent a civil war in Faerie. At least espionage stories limit the casualties. War stories try to drag everyone in. Then it threatens to detour into horror, and in horror, the story always wins. Trapped in everyone else’s stories, Aelik must choose what type of story he wants to be. Ideally, one he can live with. Book 3 of the Border Guards trilogy

Book The Strange History Buckingham Palace

Download or read book The Strange History Buckingham Palace written by Patricia Wright and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2008-06-01 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buckingham Palace is one of the most familiar buildings in the world, but who knows the real tales hidden behind its ceremonial gates? Who was the witch that once lived in the royal courtyard? How could courtesans once have plied their trade in front of the present royal windows? How dare a prime minister call the palace a monstrous insult to the nation? This text presents a detailed exploration of the ordinary and sometimes extraordinary people who owned or lived on the land now occupied by the Palace, and of the royal occupants who later inhabited it. The Strange History of Buckingham Palace reveals how Buckingham Palace came to be the place it is today, from the time when it probably formed the escape route from a Roman battle nearly 2000 years ago, to the establishment of the first gentleman's house there in the 17th century, and on into a chequered royal history, which includes an ambitious Saxon queen and James I's plan to found an English silk industry in the Palace gardens.

Book The Palace Complex

  • Author : Michal Murawski
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2019-03-22
  • ISBN : 0253039983

Download or read book The Palace Complex written by Michal Murawski and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the history and significance of the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw, Poland. The Palace of Culture and Science is a massive Stalinist skyscraper that was “gifted” to Warsaw by the Soviet Union in 1955. Framing the Palace’s visual, symbolic, and functional prominence in the everyday life of the Polish capital as a sort of obsession, locals joke that their city suffers from a “Palace of Culture complex.” Despite attempts to privatize it, the Palace remains municipally owned, and continues to play host to a variety of public institutions and services. The Parade Square, which surrounds the building, has resisted attempts to convert it into a money-making commercial center. Author Michal Murawski traces the skyscraper’s powerful impact on twenty-first century Warsaw; on its architectural and urban landscape; on its political, ideological, and cultural lives; and on the bodies and minds of its inhabitants. The Palace Complex explores the many factors that allow Warsaw’s Palace to endure as a still-socialist building in a post-socialist city. “The most brilliant book on a building in many years, making a case for Warsaw’s once-loathed Palace of Culture and Science as the most enduring and successful legacy of Polish state socialism.” —Owen Hatherley, The New Statesman’s“Books of the Year” list (UK) “An ambitious anthropological biography of Poland’s tallest and most infamous building, the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw. . . . It is a truly fascinating story that challenges a tenacious stereotype, and Murawski tells it brilliantly, judiciously layering literatures from multiple disciplines, his own ethnographic work, and personal anecdotes.” —Patryk Babiracki, H-Net History
