Two sisters and their grandmother celebrate a popular Chinese holiday with family. Their favorite part? Mooncakes, of course--along with Ah-ma's story of the ancient Chinese tale of Hou Yi, a brave young archer, and his wife, Chang'E. A long, long time ago, Hou Yi rescued the earth from the heat of ten suns. The Immortals rewarded him with a magic potion that could let him live in the sky with them forever. But when a thief tries to steal the potion, what will Chang'E do to keep it out of dangerous hands? The sisters are mesmerized by Ah-ma's retelling and the fact that the very mooncakes they enjoy each holiday are a symbol of this legend's bravest soul.

Download or read book Soviet Films of the 1970s and Early 1980s written by Marina Rojavin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-30 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores a new character archetype that permeated Soviet film during what became known as the era of Stagnation, a stark period of loneliness, disappointment, and individual despair. This new type of character was neither negative nor positive, but nevertheless systematically undermined Soviet norms of behaviour, hairstyle, dress, lifestyle, and perspective, in stark contrast to Socialist Realism’s traditional, positive hero who fought for Soviet values and who vanquished the enemies of socialism. The book discusses a wide range of films from the period, showing how the new antiheroic archetype of Stagnation resonated through a multitude of characters, mostly male, and vividly reflected the realities of Soviet life. The book thereby provides great insight into the lives, outlook, and psychology of citizens in the late Soviet period.

Book excerpt: The Mermaids Tail tells the story of the Universal Feminines emergence in history of humanity as a viable force in evolution. The soul qualities of compassion and regard for all human beings are what is demanding the redefinition of societys biggest questions. Without an equal voice in the debate about war, education, care for the land or the elderly, only part of the problem can be understood. Sophia takes the reader from the mythological to an awakened imagination that can define what the Feminine voice really is. Her love of different cultures and ability to synthesize experience creates a series of impressions that illuminate what at first glance may appear as mundane. She shares hard-won insights into the sacredness of the many expressions of a One god. Initially, what can be read as irreverence exposes a greater truth reserved only for the courageous. The Mermaids Tail unmasks hidden meanings of the tales we were told as childrenthe mythology buried deep in the recesses of our minds. The book offers unexpected and delightful insights into creating deeper personal meaning, all tied together with well-crafted, often poetic, prose. Download or read book Not a Fairy Tale written by Jacalyn Lewicki and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 603 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For millennia, selected juvenile dragons from the Seven Kingdoms of Saridon have been commissioned to cross the dimensional boundaries to Earth on missions to accompany gifted or unique humans through their lives to their destinies. Over the years, as dragon society has changed, the original purpose and intent of this Shadowing have been lost, but the programme, entrenched in Saridonian tradition, continues, although much reduced in magnitude. Banpine, a young Silver Iridescent dragon, is sent to Earth to Shadow a human girl named Lydia, born in Saskatchewan in the mid-1950s into a modest home and apparently ordinary family. But things take a dark turn when his young human becomes the victim of sexual and emotional abuse by her father. When at last Lydia reveals the crime to her siblings and mother, she finds herself trapped in a web of duplicity as they attempt to preserve the fiction that their family is whole and functional. As Banpine supports Lydia, helping her to survive the atrocities committed against her, the dragon and human forge a relationship unique in the annals of the Shadow Programme—one that ignites an earthshaking reformation in the dimension of dragons. Not a Fairy Tale is a sophisticated adult fantasy that attacks individual and social apathy toward the suffering of others, making it clear that those who deny or ignore the existence of acts of aggression are as culpable as the perpetrator. It shines an often-uncomfortable light on the way that blind adherence to tradition and devotion to the status quo silence the oppressed and perpetuate abuse. With or without the help of dragons, healing can only begin with speaking and being heard.
Download or read book A Companion to the Fairy Tale written by Hilda Roderick Ellis Davidson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2003 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction by Derek Brewer. The aim of this book is to discuss the characteristics of the traditional fairy tale in Europe and North America, and various theories of its development and interpretation. The book deals with the main collections - the Grimm brothers, Hans Andersen, Perrault and Afanes'ev - and with the development of tales in various regions of Europe, including Ireland, Wales, Scandinavia, Germany and Russia, as well as India, where it was once claimed that they originated. The subject of the fairy tale is a controversial one: problems discussed here include the relationship between tales recorded from story-tellers and literary works, the importance of printed works for the spread of the tales, the growth of recent examples with a feminine approach, the spread of popular tales like Cinderella, special types like the cumulative tales, possible effects of TV, and the nature of traditional plots and characters. Above all, we have been concerned with the distribution and long survival of these tales, and the nature of their appeal. SHORTLISTED FOR THE KATHARINE BRIGGS FOLKLORE AWARD 2004. Download or read book Scott s Shadow written by Ian Duncan and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-02 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scott's Shadow is the first comprehensive account of the flowering of Scottish fiction between 1802 and 1832, when post-Enlightenment Edinburgh rivaled London as a center for literary and cultural innovation. Ian Duncan shows how Walter Scott became the central figure in these developments, and how he helped redefine the novel as the principal modern genre for the representation of national historical life. Duncan traces the rise of a cultural nationalist ideology and the ascendancy of Scott's Waverley novels in the years after Waterloo. He argues that the key to Scott's achievement and its unprecedented impact was the actualization of a realist aesthetic of fiction, one that offered a socializing model of the imagination as first theorized by Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume. This aesthetic, Duncan contends, provides a powerful novelistic alternative to the Kantian-Coleridgean account of the imagination that has been taken as normative for British Romanticism since the early twentieth century. Duncan goes on to examine in detail how other Scottish writers inspired by Scott's innovations--James Hogg and John Galt in particular--produced in their own novels and tales rival accounts of regional, national, and imperial history. Scott's Shadow illuminates a major but neglected episode of British Romanticism as well as a pivotal moment in the history and development of the novel.
