Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography of a Pennsylvanian Public duties and other activities and responsibilities necessarily confined the writing Of the autobiography to brief periods in the summers of some four or five years. Late in the summer Of 1915 his right arm was broken and, while still carried in a sling, was again injured in a railroad train. He was never able to use the arm during the year of life that remained, but immediately after the injury, at the age Of seventy-two years, with the courage and resolution which always characterized him, he set out to write with his left hand. The concluding sentence of his account in Chapter XIII Of his visit to the battlefields Of Fredericks burg and Chancellorsville was the last portion of the auto biography written with the right hand. The remainder of Chapter XIII, the pages of comment and review in Chapter XIV, the sketches of Walt Whitman and Elihu Root in Chapter XV and the introductory paragraph of Chapter XVI were written with the left hand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Autobiography of a Pennsylvanian It is now a matter of public knowledge that the late Governor Pennypacker wrote, for publication, an Autobiography. Of the existence of this work he had often spoken to his friends. A fear exists, on the part of the latter, that a desire to avoid controversy, or the possible injury to someone's feelings may tempt his family to consider having the manuscript edited. His friends and associates whose signatures are appended, feel that they owe it to his family, to the institutions with which he was connected, and to his memory, to urge that this be not done. Unaltered, unexpurgated and unedited, Governor Pennypacker's Autobiography constitutes an invaluable historical document, of increasing public interest, perhaps his greatest contribution to the history of the state. And it is in the name of the citizens of Pennsylvania, living and to come, that we urge his family to print his Autobiography exactly as it was written. Book Aldornere and Two Other Pennsylvanian Idylls

Download or read book Aldornere and Two Other Pennsylvanian Idylls written by Howard Worcester Gilbert and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Aldornere and Two Other Pennsylvanian Idylls: Together With Minor Poems The fugitive pieces which follow are selected from among a large number of others which were printed at different periods, and under various circumstances, many of them in early boyhood, and for which the author could desire even a more speedy oblivion than the partiality of his personal friends would accord to them. Premature publication is the fault of ambitious youthful writers; and in this age Of abounding literary production, but little judgment is required to see that a large exercise of the right of suppression is the dictate of good sense. All of the poems contained in the present volume have been subjected to a careful revision, a few alterations have been made, and the whole freed from the innumerable blunders of the printer, who is constantly found lying in ambush, in the most unexpected places, ready to slay the spirit with the letter. Several poetical licences have been discarded; but two or three have been retained. The fugitive pieces were all originally published either in the National anti-slavery Standard, under the man agement of Mr. Gay; The Pennsylvania Freeman; Mr. Conway's Dial or The Liberty Bell, or The Index, Of Boston. If the reader should observe any incongruity of a theological charac ter in the volume, he may account for it on the ground of a gradual change of views in the mind of the author. The lives of Penn and Franklin have been already so well and often described that no school - child has excuse for ignorance concerning them. James G. Blaine is also excluded, because, although a Pennsylvanian by birth, he in a special sense represented Maine throughout his career. Exception may be taken to the inclusion of Audubon, but it was in our State that his life-work began. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book With P u and His Brigands Classic Reprint

Download or read book With P u and His Brigands Classic Reprint written by Mrs. Howard Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With P'u and His Brigands IT may be that readers of this little book will be moved with pity for the sufferings it depicts - not our own, but those of millions in China to-day scourged by civil war and brigandage. It may be they will want to know how they can help to heal this open sore of the world. Among many ways, none is more effectual, we venture to think, than waiting upon God in prayer - steadfast, believing prayer in the name of Christ. There is no com parison between what man can do and what God can do. Shall we not wait upon Him, then, for this great country in which one quarter of the human race is slowly turning toward the light, sore pressed with problems to which Christ alone affords the solution, sick with sin, and wounded with sufferings He alone can heal. Book The Gold Headed Cane Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Gold Headed Cane Classic Reprint written by William Macmichael and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gold-Headed Cane It is very fitting that a new edition of the Gold Headed Cane should appear just at this time, as a memorial of the life and labours of its first owner, Dr. John Radcliffe. Here in Oxford, where his name is writ large in stone, we had hoped to have ceremonies appropriate to the 200th anniversary of his death, but at present the University has other things to think of. The Radcliffe Trustees have, however, arranged with Dr. Nias and the Clarendon Press to issue a brief life and an account of the Travelling Fellows, with whom his name is associated. When and where he got the celebrated cane is unknown. To the story of his life so well told here by Dr. Macmichael nothing need be added. There is probably no name in our profession with which are associated so many benefactions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Patriot s History of the United States

Download or read book A Patriot s History of the United States written by Larry Schweikart and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2004-12-29 with total page 1350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.

Book The Education of Henry Adams

Download or read book The Education of Henry Adams written by Henry Adams and published by Standard Ebooks. This book was released on 2022-10-04T17:27:17Z with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most well-known and influential autobiographies ever written, The Education of Henry Adams is told in the third person, as if its author were watching his own life unwind. It begins with his early life in Quincy, the family seat outside of Boston, and soon moves on to primary school, Harvard College, and beyond. He learns about the unpredictability of politics from statesmen and diplomats, and the newest discoveries in technology, science, history, and art from some of the most important thinkers and creators of the day. In essentially every case, Adams claims, his education and upbringing let him down, leaving him in the dark. But as the historian David S. Brown puts it, this is a “charade”: The Education’s “greatest irony is its claim to telling the story of its author’s ignorance, confusion, and misdirection.” Instead, Adams uses its “vigorous prose and confident assertions” to attack “the West after 1400.” For instance, industrialization and technology make Adams wonder “whether the American people knew where they were driving.” And in one famous chapter, “The Dynamo and the Virgin,” he contrasts the rise of electricity and the power it brings with the strength and resilience of religious belief in the Middle Ages. The grandson and great-grandson of two presidents and the son of a politician and diplomat who served under Lincoln as minister to Great Britain, Adams was born into immense privilege, as he knew well: “Probably no child, born in the year, held better cards than he.” After growing up a Boston Brahmin, he worked as a journalist, historian, and professor, moving in early middle age to Washington. Although Adams distributed a privately printed edition of a hundred copies of The Education for friends and family in 1907, it wasn’t published more widely until 1918, the year he died. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for biography in 1919, and in 1999 a Modern Library panel placed it first on its list of the best nonfiction books published in the twentieth century. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.
