Many studies have used the Autobiographical Interview to characterize individual differences in the ability to recall one's personal past. However, a comprehensive investigation of the psychometric properties of the Autobiographical Interview has not been reported. The Autobiographical Interview requires participants to recount specific autobiographical events that have occurred over several life epochs. Each remembrance is scored for episodic (i.e. specific details) and semantic (i.e. general facts and information) features of the recalled event. Here we investigated the reliability, internal consistency and construct validity of the Autobiographical Interview in a sample of 120 young adults. Inter-rater reliability was high for a sample of expert raters. Internal consistency, the quantity of internal (episodic) and external (semantic) event details recalled across three life epochs was lower than predicted. Construct validity was assessed as correlations between the autobiographical interview and standard measures of episodic and semantic memory, executive functioning, and social cognition. The Autobiographical Interview demonstrated only moderate and variable associations with episodic memory and executive function measures. It was not reliably associated with measures of social cognition. These findings suggest that the psychometric properties of the Autobiographical Interview are variable, with strong inter-rater reliability and lower than predicted internal and construct validity. Given the prominence of this measure in the study of autobiographical memory, future research is necessary to determine whether the autobiographical interview is providing a reliable and valid assessment of individual differences in the ability to recall one's personal past.

Book excerpt: The organization of the first Society for Applied Research in Memory and Cognition (SARMAC) conference centered around two specifically identifiable research topics -- autobiographical memory and eyewitness memory. These two areas -- long-time staples on the menu of investigators of memory in more natural settings -- differ on a variety of dimensions, perhaps most notably in their specific goals for scientific inquiry and application. For many questions about memory and cognition that are of interest to scientific psychology, there have been historical as well as rather arbitrary reasons for their assignment to the autobiographical or eyewitness memory fields. Perhaps as a result of differing historical orientations, the first volume's seven autobiographical memory chapters focus upon the qualities or types of recall from research participants, whereas the seven chapters in the eyewitness memory volume generally focus upon the quantity (a concern for completeness) and accuracy of recall. This interest in the ultimate end-product and its application within the legal process in general encourages eyewitness memory investigators to modify their testing procedures continually in an attempt to gain even more information from participants about an event. Indeed, several of the eyewitness memory chapters reflect such attempts. Beyond the specific contributions of each chapter to the literature on autobiographical and eyewitness memory, the editors hope that the reader will come away with some general observations: * the autobiographical and eyewitness memory fields are thriving; * these two fields are likely to remain center stage in the further investigation of memory in natural contexts; * although the autobiographical and eyewitness memory chapters have been segregated in these two volumes, the separation is often more arbitrary than real and connections between the two areas abound; * the two research traditions are entirely mindful of fundamental laboratory methods, research, and theory -- sometimes drawing their research inspirations from that quarter; and * the two fields -- though driven largely by everyday memory concerns -- can contribute to a more basic understanding of memory at both an empirical and a theoretical level.

This study investigated these changes using a new measure of autobiographical memory: The Autobiographical Interview. Younger and older adults recalled events from 5 lifetime periods. Memories were broken down into internal (event-related) and external (semantic, or off-target information) details. Internal details also received rating scores. We found that younger adults received higher internal detail and rating scores in contrast to older adults who received higher external detail scores. Detail groups were further broken down into detail categories to examine which ones accounted for these age differences. Younger adults recalled more perceptual and thought internal details, and older adults recalled more semantic information. Memories from the last year were examined to control for memory age, and a similar pattern of recollection was evinced. Our findings support theories of selective frontal degeneration, and inefficient inhibitory processes in older adults.

Book excerpt: The meeting Theoretical Perspectives on Autobiographical Memory was held at the Grange Hotel, Grange-over-Sands, in the Lake District region of North Western England, July 1991. The workshop was financed by a generous grant from the NATO Scientific Affairs Division under the Advanced Research Workshop programme and without this funding the meeting would not have been possible: the organisers and delegates gratefully acknowledge the support of the NATO Advanced Research Workshops programme. Thirty-five scientists from five different NATO countries attended the workshop and twenty-seven delegates presented papers. The two aims of the workshop were to bring together in one forum a number of comparatively separate approaches to autobiographical memory and to promote theory in the area generally . These aims were fulfilled in the presentations and discussions, particularly the final discussion session, in which delegates focussed on the central issues of the nature, structure, and functions of autobiographical memory and how these emerge in different research areas. The present volume contains the papers arising from the workshop. Book excerpt: "Autobiographical memory (AM) involves a rich phenomenological re-experiencing of a spatio-temporal event from the past, which is challenging to objectively quantify. The Autobiographical Interview (AI; Levine et al., 2002, Psychology & Aging) is a manualized performance-based assessment designed to quantify episodic (internal) and semantic (external) features of recalled and verbally conveyed prior experiences. The AI has been widely adopted yet has not undergone a comprehensive psychometric validation. We investigated the reliability, validity, association to individual differences measures, and factor structure in healthy younger and older adults (N=352). Evidence for the AI's reliability was strong: the subjective scoring protocol showed high inter-rater reliability and previously identified age effects were replicated. Internal consistency across timepoints was robust, suggesting stability in recollection. Central to our validation, internal AI scores were positively correlated with standard, performance-based measures of episodic memory, demonstrating convergent validity. The two-factor structure for the AI was not well-supported by confirmatory factor analysis. Adjusting internal and external detail scores for the number of words spoken (detail density) improved trait estimation of AM performance. Overall, the AI demonstrated sound psychometric properties for inquiry into the qualities of autobiographical remembering"--
